In this course ARTC 1302, Digital Imaging I Photoshop CS5 for Macintosh and PC; students will concentrate their learning on image oriented graphics and design in a computerized Bit-mapped format, to include: image editing, color correction, photo-restoration, digital collage (compositing of multiple images), preparing and optimizing images for the Internet. The acquisition of digital images through scanning, imported graphics, photographs, and digital photography. Service Bureau printing and desktop inkjet printers. Also the outputting of digital images to the Web.

AttendanceAttendance is required (3 semester hours credit = 2 hours of lecture/ 2 hours of in class lab time per week). The HCC Catalog states: “ A student may be dropped from a course for excessive absences after the student has accumulated absences in excess of 12.5% of hours of instruction ( including lecture and regularly scheduled lab times)” This trans-lates into more than 2 missed classes for the Fall semester. Being late class will not be tolerated (10 minutes past start time}. Attendance will be checked each class session. Your attendance is considered to be part of class participation, and as such will affect you grade. The instructor will not to issue administrative drops for students with excessive absences. Anyone with excessive absences is advised to drop the course; Students with excessive absences who do not drop by the published deadline will receive a grade of F in the course. Students may also sign up for optional, open labs, which will be available after the first week of classes; Lab Policies are stated later in this syllabus.

Course CompetenciesThis will be demonstrated by the assignments you complete and turn in to include the Final Projects and your portfolio.There will a discussion in class pertaining to the Online Blackboard Vista requirement for the class.

Course Supplies

Notebook binder, 4Gig Jump Drive or a Pocket Hard Drive, 1 reem of laser paper, Students will supply the nec-essary Epson paper for in class print outs ( costs around $20.00 per student), also each student must purchase a portfolio binder as shown in class (11”x14”). The suggested text books and anything else assigned in class ( old family photos, etc.). It is strongly suggested that the student purchase a portable external hardrive, this will be discussed in class. * The $20.00 paid by each student allows us to print out the highest quality prints of each assignment done in class. Each student may choose to print out their own assignments for the portfolio require-ment at the end of the semester. Print Fee money is due by Feb. 6 2012. No refunds can be given after March 5, 2012

Course Competencies StatementUpon completion of this course, Photoshop CS5 , students will have demonstrated the ability to edit and manipulate digital images, have a demonstrated competency in the use and understanding of Photoshop CS5, demonstrate com-petency in inputing and outputting of digital art graphics for printing, and optimization of digital images for the Web.

Grading

Grading Weights: Please see page 10 of syllabus for the new grading weight system for this course.

You will be given an Objectives ( both technical and aesthetic) and a Grade Evaluation Sheet with each assign-ment. You will be expected to meet the criteria on each assignment sheet and, turn in the Grade Evaluation Sheet signed to the Instructor. Grading will be scored by the amount of points allocated to each criteria. A total number of points will be listed on the grade sheet for each criteria. The instructor will record a numerical score for each criteria on the evaluation sheet leading to a total score for the assignment. Total scores will equal to a letter grade as defined by a predetermined numerical scoring range ( 130 - 120 points = A). Numerical points will automat-icaly be deducted for all assignments turned in late or only partially completed. Grading system info. to be handed out in class.

Students will be graded on the following criteria: 1. Completion of assignments, exhibiting the ability to accurately and creatively render the assignments involving the application techniques demonstrated in class, in the written handouts. Online Research Assignment and Class Presentation 2. Turning assignments in on time with the Grading Evaluation Sheet and in the manner stated by the instrutor. 3. Attempts to push the assignments further then what is required will increase the chances for a higher grade. 4. Creativity in rendering the assignment and original thinking when pertinent. 5. Class attendance and participation. 6. Completing of and presentatiobn of final portofilio

Each Assignment will be turned into the instructor thru the Shared Folder. Certain assignments will be printed out in class in color. It is suggested that you have at least one assignment output by a “Service Bureau”, this will be discussed in class. It is recommended that you use Houston Photo-Imaging to output certain assignments. You will treat each assignment as a portfolio piece; this means printed out in color and secured in the assigned portfolio binder. Your portfolio must be presented on the asssigned date at the end of the Spring Semester 2012.

Work Place CompetenciesTime Management - Student will have a complete understanding of course requirements and allocate his or her time to complete all required assignments and projects by assigned date.

Organizes / Maintains Information - Students will maintain a binder containing all class materiels and a portfolio with printed copies of all assignments. Students will also maintain copies of all assignments on the Student Hardrive and external storage devices. ( No Excuses accepted for lost or damaged assignments).

Uses Computer to Process Information - Students will create and render all assignments and projects on a Macintosh or PC computer using Photoshop CS5Blackboard Vista Students will utilize and understand how to access anf use Blackboard Vista for furthur online training.

Understand Systems - Students are required to understand the basic HCC West Loop Center’s system for accessing the computers, printing, scanning, storing files, accessing the department’s Shared Folder, and the technology inherent in Photoshop CS5 to operate it effectively.

Monitors/Corrects Performance - Students will monitor his/her performance to meet the criteria of the course and the technology involved. Applies Technology to the Tasks - Student will make every attempt to understand the technology being taught and used in class while following the proper operating procedures inherent Photoshop CS5.

Wk.6 Assignment 4 - “Colorizing a Black and White Image ”- Colorizing a Black and White Picture. (Feb. 27) Making Selections using the Pen Tool and the Path Pallet, Saving Selections, Using of Alpha Channels, Color Fills, Fill Blending Modes, Adjustment Layer, Color Adjustment Commands, Clone Stamp Tool, Blur Filter, Healing Brush. You will be given a black and white photograph and you learn how to select and apply color to the various parts of the picture. You are expected to use all the techniques, tools, and commands you have learned up to now in Photoshop CS4. There will be special emphasis placed on using Layers and image compositing techniques. You will be graded on originality of concept and design, creative use of images to express your ideas and in the utilization of Photoshop CS4/5. There will be a class handout giving more specific instruction and a Grading Criteria sheet for this project. There will also be further demonstrations in class for techniques to use on the project. Special emphasis on the introduction of Layer Masks. Midterm due Apr.2 at the beggining of class. The Midterm project should be turned into the Instructor FLattened on the Shared Drive; your final image will be printed out in class and mounted in the assigned portfolio. Wk. 11 Assignment 7, Photo Restoration and Scanning You will be given one old and damaged (Apr. 9) photograph to restore using the techniques demonstrated in class. You will then use this knowlege to restore a second picture and you are expected to bring in some old color or B&W photos of your own to restore. You will learn to remove scratches, mold, watermarks, and any other disfiguring elements in the photograph. Your old photos will be scanned and re- sized as needed. Use of the Rubber Stamp Tool • Healing Brush Tool • Patch Tool • History Brush • Spot Healing Brush. Adustment Layers and Masks will introduced for non distructive color adjustments More Curves and Levels, Color Adjustment, and Duotones. Wk. 14 Discussion of and start the Final Project.(Apr.23) Wk. 15 Working on Final Project.(Apr.30) Final Project “ A Visual Narrative” Using photographs and other scanned images you will tell a story about your family, or an event in your life, or create a memorial piece to a loved one, The final project will be a culmination of all the techniques you have learned in Photoshop CS3 this semester. Your grade on this assignment will be based on creativity in meeting the criteria of the assignment and the skill level you demonstrate in using Photoshop. More detailed information regarding the final project will be given out in class as well as a grade criteria sheet. It is suggested that a Service Bureau be used to output the final project, this will require extra time,more will be explained in class. The Final Project is due a the beginning of the last day class May 7 (This assignment might change depending on the class) Wk. 15 Portfolio Due at the Beginning of Class, Lab time to work on Final(Apr.30) Wk16 Final Projects Due at Beginning of Class(May 7 ) NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS EXCEPTED
