Base isolators are energy absorberswhich are movable, loadbearingelements inserted below structuralcolumns to dissipate the transmissionof the seismic movement from thefoundation to the structure. Firstused in the U.S. in the mid 1980’s,they come in three categories;high-damping rubber, lead-rubberbearing, and friction pendulum.

During an earthquake, base isolatedbuildings move, yet much of themovement is dampened by thebase isolators and not transmittedto the columns.

Base isolators are very costly, yetthey often reduce post earthquakerepair cost. They are also used toretrofit historical buildings toincrease seismic resistance withoutadding massive shear walls.
