What is a cyclone?

How are Cyclones Formed?

1. Cyclones are severe storms that occur in tropical regions2. They will occur in tropical areas where the sea is warm3. The sea has to be at a temperature of at least 27C for a few weeks and a sea

depth of 60m or more 4. The hot water will evaporate and rise5. This causes a low pressure system in the area6. The air will rise and then condense into clouds called Cumulo

Nimbus 7. The warm water acts like fuel, it heats the air above it, causing storm

clouds and heavy rainfall8. They have high winds and large amounts of rainfall9. It will form high cumulo nimbus clouds and can cover an area of over 1500km 10. The middle will have the eye of the storm (High pressure) and is surrounded

by Low pressure11. In the Northern Hemisphere the storm clouds will rotate in a anti clockwise

direction. 12. The storm loses strength when it moves on land and away from the equator 13. Northern hemisphere has cyclones in May-November. Southern Hemisphere

has storm Novembers to April.

Cyclone Nargis;

Social Impacts

Environmental Impacts

Economic Impacts

Short term

Top Tip for A / A* Success;

Students will be able to divide case study detail

into social, environmental and economic impacts.

Cyclone Nargis Key Facts;

Formed; April 27, 2008 and Dissipated; May 3, 2008  Highest winds; 215 km/h (135 mph) Lowest pressure; 962 hPa (mbar) Fatalities; ≥146,000 direct, ~54,000 missing Damage; $10 billion (2008 USD)

$10.1 billion (2009 USD) Areas affected; Bangladesh, Burma, India, Sri Lanka 75% of houses were destroyed in the capital city

Rangoon Rangoon Airport was closed for 4 days The country relies on rice as an export. This was

destroyed in the cyclone There was a 3.6m storm surge, leading to extensive

flooding An estimated 2.4 million people were affected by the

storm

What impact do you think that it will have on the following people?

TaskFor each of the different groups explain how they

will be affected by the cyclone

1. A farmer in a rural area 2. A homeowner in Burma3. A tourist sightseeing in the local area4. The government in Burma

Extension; Which of the different groups of people is going to be affected the most? Explain why they will be affected

With reference to a named example; 1. Describe the location of a low pressure system 2. Explain the impacts of this system on the

environment, the economy and people of the area (8 marks)

Applying your new knowledge

Level 1; does not give a named example, adds in general points that have not figures, does not explain how the different groups of people will be affectedLevel 2; Gives named example, Describes the location of the system, start to give some figures in their answer, explain the impacts of the event in general terms Level 3; Gives named example, describes the location of the event, breaks down the impacts of the event into different catagories, good figures are included, geographical terminology included
