A DAY AT THE RACES WITH SCUDERIA CORSA AND KIDS FROM THE RONALD McDONALD HOUSE AT STANFORD Monterey, California September 9, 2012. It’s hard not to smile when you see a sixyear old boy sitting inside a shiny, red Ferrari racecar and grinning from ear to ear. But the two men smiling most on the sidelines were the ones responsible for hosting thirtyfive individuals, many seriously ill children with their parents currently under care at the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, as VIP guests of Scuderia Corsa, a new racing team owned by Giacomo Mattioli and Atherton philanthropist Art Zafiropoulo. The day began with the children, their parents and caregivers lunching in the VIP hospitality suite overlooking the legendary Laguna Seca raceway near Monterey, California, as cars roared by at full speed. After donning their new red Tshirts emblazoned with Scuderia Corsa and the Ronald McDonald House logos, the kids headed down to the pits where they got to sit in the No. 63 Ferrari 458 GT3 and meet the team. A highlight was talking to drivers Olivier Beretta, one of the most successful sports car racing drivers of all time and his codriver, Alessandro Balzan. The team was in high spirits, having run the fastest lap in practice and qualifying for Sunday’s GT pole position. The association between the team’s owners and Ronald McDonald House at Stanford goes back many years. Team coowner Art Zafiropoulo has been a major supporter of the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford for over 17 years and said, “these wonderful kids and their families are going through so much. We thought a day at the races and a chance to meet the team and sit in the car would put a smile on their faces and give them some great memories to look back on. I’ve supported the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford for so many years because they give families a warm and welcome shelter from the devastation of having a very sick child. ”
