The songs are performed by Lucia Todoran and George Planianin.

Some say that he lived six hundred years ago, and some, again, that he lived at the beginning of the twentieth century. The legend of him lives to this day. The cave in which he hid his

treasure is known, although it has remained unexplored.

Adam Neamţu, a teacher, who was born as Adam Duma somewhere in the Romanian Banat, decided to give up everything and become an outlaw, a haiduc, with Lăzărică and a few friends, to rob the rich and to use that money to make life easier for the common, poor man. It is said that he gave away the lion’s share of his money and ducats. Unfortunately, his fate confirmed the truth of the Romanian saying that “the ax does not cut the forest, the handle

does”. He was betrayed by those who benefited most from his actions.

George Planianin chose this story for his doctoral dissertation at the Musical academy in Bucharest. Thus, the musical “Haiduc Adam Neamţu” was created. The script is inspired by Damian Izverniceanu’s book (printed in Oravița in 1921, and re-printed in America in 2000).

The text has been adapted to the form of a radio drama. This is the first musical made by the Editorial Staff of the Program in the Romanian language of Radio Novi Sad, which has

produced, recorded and transmitted radio dramas for adults and children since 1985.

Spun oamenii că ar fi trăit în urmă cu 600 de ani. Ba, alţii, că ar fi trăit la începutul secolului trecut. În orice caz, legenda i-a supravieţuit. Trăieşte şi azi. Se ştie chiar şi unde e peştera

în care a păstrat comorile.

Adam Neamţu, învăţătorul care s-a născut pe numele adevărat Adam Duma, undeva în Banatul românesc, a hotărât să lase casă şi masă şi să ia drumul codrilor, împreună cu prietenul Lăzărică şi cu alţi săteni, pentru ca jefuind pe cei bogaţi, să ajute poporul nevoiaş. Se spune că împărţea galbeni cu poala. Şi totuşi, ca să se adeverească proverbul românesc

precum că „Pădurea de coada toporului piere”, a fost trădat de cei pe care-i ocrotea.

George Planjanin a ales această poveste ca unul dintre subiectele tezei lui de doctorat la UNMB. Aşa a luat naştere „Haiducul Adam Neamţu”, muzical. Textul a fost inspirat din volumul cu acelaşi nume semnat de Damian Izverniceanu (Oraviţa, 1921 şi reeditat în

America în 2000).

Textul lui George Planjanin a fost adaptat pentru radio şi acesta este primul muzical realizat de Programul în Limba Română de pe lângă Postul de Radio Novi Sad, la care se înregistrează piese de teatru din anul 1985 şi tot de atunci transmite Teatru Radiofonic

pentru adulţi şi pentru copii.

LIBRETUL SI MUSICAGeorge Planjanin s-a născut la Novi Sad în 1980. Doctoratul l-a luat la București (România) chiar cu scenariul muzicalului ”Adam Neamțu”. Este redactor muzical la Radio Novi Sad, interpret vocal cu mai multe premii la Festivalul ”Tinerețea cântă” Uzdin Serbia și la Festivalul Internațional de muzică ușoară Brăila (Romania). In fonoteca de aur a RTVoivodinei i se păstrează aproximativ 40 de compoziții. Este membru în Corul Academic AU din Novi Sad și în Corul Royal College of music, Stockholm. A participat la festivaluri prestigioase ca NOMUS, Festivalul corurilor de la Ruma, Festivalele de muzică ușoară de la Brăila și Calafat. În calitate de compozitor a participat la

workshopuri ”Metamorfoze” la Sinaia (Roomânia) și Tergnier (Franța).

REGIAIulian Ursulescu s-a născut în 1959 la Ecica, sat românesc din Voivodina. A absolvit Institutul de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică din București (România). Din 1985 este angajat la Televiziunea Novi Sad ca regizor, iar cu filmele documentare realizate pentru Redacția Programului în Limba Română a TV Novi Sad (Radioteleviziunea Voivodinei) a luat numeroase premii la festivale internaționale (România, Moldova, Ucraina, Serbia). Traduce piese de teatru din română în sârbă și viceversa. A

regizat treizeci de spectacole de teatru.

REDACTORAna Niculina Ursulescu este născută în 1957 la Uzdin, sat românesc în Banatul de sud, Voivodina. A terminat dreptul la Facultatea de Drept din Novi Sad și din 1985 lucrează la Radio Novi Sad (Radioteleviziunea Voivodinei) ca redactor al Programului în Limba Română, realizând emisiuni pentru copii și emisiuni din domeniul culturii. Pentru emisiunile pentru copii și reportajele documentare a fost premiată în mai multe rânduri la festivale în țară și peste hotare (Ucraina, România). Este autoarea a opt volume de poezie si proză pentru copii, a două volume de note de drum și a unei piese de teatru pentru copii pusă în scenă la Teatrul ”Tudor Vianu” din Giurgiu (Romania) prezentată la Festivalul Teatrelor Țărilor Dunărene în 2015. A tradus 12 piese de teatru din română în sârbă sau viceversa, unele montate la Uzdin, Beočin, Belgrad, Craiova, Reşiţa, Piteşti...

MAESTRUL DE SUNET Barbulov Doru s-a născut în anul 1960 la Novi Sad, Serbia. Din anul 1983 este angajatul Instituţiei publice Radioteleviziunea Voivodinei, Radio Novi Sad, în calitate de sunetist, în cadrul departamentului de înregistrări - teatru la microfon. A participat la numeroase festivaluri: Prix Italia, Taktons Novi Sad (Întrecerea internaţională a sunetiştilor profesionişti), Brezovica, Hvar-Croaţia (Festivalul internaţional de teatru la microfon). Este deţinătorul premiului pentru cel mai bun sunet la festivalurile: Pamporovo (Bulgaria), Ohrid (Macedonia), Sombor (Serbia), Užgorod (Ucraina), şi al

premiului anual al Postului de Radio Novi Sad. Este membru al jurului Întrecerii „Taktons”.

MAESTRUL DE SUNETAleksandar Marković s-a născut în anul 1963 la Novi Sad, Serbia. Din anul 1985 este angajatul Instituţiei publice Radioteleviziunea Voivodinei, Radio Novi Sad, în calitate de sunetist. Pe lângă multe premii şi distincţii din partea Radioteleviziunii Voivodinei, a participat la Festivalul Prix Italia 1989 şi este deţinătorul premilor pentru sunet la festivalurile: Brezovica, Ohrid 1989, Sombor 2005, 2006, 2009, Subotica 2010, Taktons (Întrecerea internaţională a sunetiştilor profesionişti – cea mai bună înregistrare în categoria teatru radiofonic) 2004, Taktons 2007 (premiul întâi la categoria teatru radiofonic), Taktons 2011(premiul întâi la categoria teatru radiofonic documentar), Taktons 2013 (premiul întâi la categoria teatru radiofonic), Taktons 2015 (premiul întâi la categoria teatru radiofonic), Taktons 2015 (premiul „Ivan Fece” pentru înregistrarea care a obţinut cea mai mare notă medie din partea juriului de specialitate), premiul întâi la Festivalul PRIX EX AEQUO 2016, Taktons 2017 (premiul întâi la categoria teatru radiofonic), premiul doi (Silver Radio Winner) la Festivalul New York 2017, în categoria programul de teatru radiofonic şi program-ficţiune pentru copii şi tineret. Este şi deţinătorul a patru premii jubiliare, „Premiul anual” al Radioteleviziunii Voivodinei.

AUTHORGeorge Planjanin was born in Novi Sad in 1980. He received his doctorate degree in Bucharest (Romania) with the script for the musical “Adam Neamţu”. He is a music editor at Radio Novi Sad and a vocalist who has received several awards at the Uzdin festival ”Tinerețea cântă” [Youth Sings] in Serbia and at the International Music Festival in Brăila (Romania). Around 40 of his compositions are preserved in RTVoivodina’s gold studio. He is a member of the Academic Choir of AA in Novi Sad and the Royal College of Music Choir, in Stockholm. He has participated in prestigious festivals such as NOMUS, Ruma Choir Festival, Music Festivals in Brăila and Calafat. As a composer, he

participated in workshops “Metamorfoze” in Sinaia (România) and Tergnier (France).

DIRECTORIulian Ursulescu was born in 1959 in Ecica, a Romanian village in Vojvodina. He graduated from the Institute of Theater and Cinematography Arts in Bucharest (Romania). EDITORAna Niculina Ursulescu was born in 1957 in Uzdin, a Romanian village in the Southern Banat, Vojvodina. She graduated from the Law School of Novi Sad and since 1985 she has been working at Radio Novi Sad (Radio Television of Vojvodina) as an editor of the Program in the Romanian Language, making children’s radio shows and radio shows dedicated to culture. For her children’s programs and documentary reports, she has been awarded many times at festivals in the country and abroad (Ukraine, Romania). She is the author of eight collections of poems and prose for children, two travelogues and a children’s theater play performed at the “Tudor Vianu” Theater in Giurgiu (Romania) and presented at the Festival of Theaters of the Danube Countries in 2015. She translated 12 plays from Romanian into Serbian or vice versa, some of them having been performed

at Uzdin, Beočin, Belgrade, Craiova, Reşiţa, Piteşti.

SOUND ENGINEERBarbulov Doru was born in 1960 in Novi Sad, Serbia. He has been employed in RUV, Radio Novi Sad since 1983 as a sound engineer, in the Department of Drama Recording. He took part at numerous festivals: Prix Italia, Taktons (International Competition of Professional Sound Recordist), Brezovica, Hvar (Croatia), International Radio Drama Festival in Herne Bay (UK). Won the award for best sound on festivals: Pamporovo (Bulgaria) , Ohrid (FYROM), Sombor (Serbia), Ushhorod (Ukraine). Winner of

the annual prize of Radio Novi Sad. Member of the jury at Taktons.

SOUND ENGINEERAleksandar Marković was born in 1963 in Novi Sad, Serbia. He has been employed with RUV, RTV, Radio Novi Sad since 1985 as sound engineer. Beside a large number of internal awards and recognition, he took part at Prix Italia 1989 Festival and won the Best Sound award at the following festivals: Brezovica, Ohrid ‘89, Sombor 2005, 2006, 2009, Subotica 2010. Taktons (International Competition of professional recording engineer - 2004 (best recording in the category of documentary radio drama), Taktons 2007- first prize (Drama Category), Taktons 2011- first prize (category documentary radio drama), Taktons 2013 -first prize (drama category), Taktons 2015 - first prize (drama category) and Taktons 2015 Award “Ivan Fece” (for recording that received the highest average score of the jury), Taktons 2017- first prize (drama category). Award” by the Radio Television of Vojvodina.

din sat să nu bănuiască...

Un haiduc:Hai, şi ne-om vedea duminică!

Lăzărică:Să-i spui lui Nică şi lui Gheorghe.

Un haiduc:Îi spun şi lui Sinesie Buzangiu şi mai ştiu eu câţiva!

Lăzărică:Şi de aceea am venit la tine, Adame, că noi aşa am socotit: să apucăm

cărările şi să mai băgăm oleacă de groază în afurisiţii aduşi de vânturi, care îşi bat joc de bietul ţăran sărac, pe care îl jefuiesc şi îl mai fac să şi

long time about how they’ll head for the forest, to watch the roads...

Adam:You give them the news, tell them to take supplies and weapons

and to make sure no one in the village suspects anything...

Adam:Fraţilor, m-aţi chemat, mi-am lăsat dăscălia și iată-mă: am venit!

N-am de gând să jefuiesc neomenește, ci am de gând să fiu sprijin fraţilor mei bătuţi de rele şi ocrotitor al nevoieşilor. Că Dumnezeu mai trimite din când în când, câte un haiduc, ca să scuture şi să spargă cuiburile pline de

blestemaţi şi ticăloşi. De azi înainte să fim credincioşi unul altuia şi să luptăm toţi pentru unul şi unul pentru toţi. Gândul trădării să fie departe

de noi. Fără cruţare şi fără milă să fim cu cei avuţi şi cu cei prigonitori, iar milostivi şi îndurători faţă de cei săraci. Să jurăm pe sfântul cer

cu toţii că aşa vom face!

Adam:Brothers, you called me, I left teaching and here I am: I came! I have no

intention of robbing people without any regard, my plan is to support my brothers who are beaten by the evil and to be their protector. From time to

time, God sends an outlaw, a haiduc, to unleash his wrath and to break apart the lairs where the cursed and wicked men hide. From now on, we should

have faith in each other, and fight, all for one and one for all. Let the thought of betrayal be far from us. We should not have mercy or spare the rich and

those that persecute the innocent, but we should show mercy and patience for the poor. Let’s swear to the holy heaven that this will be our conduct!

(Il bat pe Jivcovici. Urlete de durere).

Adam:Make sure nothing happens to the women! Nobleman, there’s no time to lose, give us the money! Old debt, new payment! Lăzărică, get a whip and

do what needs to be done.

Adam:Taci şi nu striga!

Mama:Adame, Adame, dîn om dă treabă, cum ce-ai ortăc’it tu cu pustălăii

şî cu bejenarii... cum mă făcuş tu de miru’ lumii, să-m’ străjascăpandurii casa! Ș-acuma-s afară şî aşceaptă să

pună mâna pră cin’e.

Adam:Destul, mamă... Ştiu că sunt afară. I-am auzit...

Dar am venit să vă aduc şi vouă vreun ban.(Adam îi dă mamei un pumn de galbeni).

Mama:Nu, nu n’e trăbuie bani, sufletu’ meu!Numa tu să fii viu șî sănătos, Adame!

(Adam azvârle un pumn de galbeni pandurilor).

Adam:Dobitocilor! Umblaţi singuri după moarte, nenorociţilor!

Scena V

(Exterior, pădure, noapte. Haiducii sapă o groapă în care îşi ascund galbenii.)

Adam:Trebuie să fim cu ochii în patru. Dar înainte de toate să ne ascundem banii,

căci poate vor veni vremuri grele şi nu va fi uşor. Dacă nu ai la îndemână bani albi pentru zile negre... Aşa... Iar Ileana… Hmmm, Ileana!!! După ce ne căsătorim, unde o vedea că sunt mai puţini panduri, acolo să trăiască... şi

să dea de veste de cele ce se întâmplă... Aşa, aşa ar fi mai bine...

Scena VI

(Interior, cârciumă. Pandurii, puţin cam “afumaţi”, ciocnesc)

Pandurul 1:Am apucat şi alţi oameni în vremea mea, mai straşnici, ca Pârvu

Giumanca, de frica căruia a tremurat Banatul întreg şi care voia să facă revoluţie! Am trimis la spânzurătoare şi pe alţi haiduci, ca pe Sdrâncea

haiducul, pe Adam Leşa! Ce mi-e mie un Adam Neamţu,un biet dăscăluţ!

Constable 1:It is him!

Constable 2:Adam Neamțu!

(A night bird’s soft whistle)

Constable 1:In the name of the law!

Constable 2:Surrender yourselves!

Constable 1:Or else - we’ll shoot you!

(Adam tosses a handful of gold coins to the constables).

Adam:Fools! You’re looking for trouble, you simpletons!

Scene V

(Exterior, forest, night. The haiducs dig a hole in which they hide their gold coins.)

Adam:We have to keep our eyes open. But first of all, we should hide our money, for the tough times that may come. It will not be easy without money put

aside for rainy days... That’s it... And Ileana... Ahh, Ileana!!! After we get married, she should find a place to live where there are fewer constables... and let us know about what’s going on... That’s it, that’s how it should be...

Scene VI

(Interior, inn. Constables, a bit “tipsy”, clink glasses)

Constable 1:In my time we went after many men, more terrible, like Pârvu Giumanca,

who had everyone in Banat scared stiff and who wanted to start a revolution! I also sent to the gallows other outlaws, like Sdrâncea the

haiduc, and Adam Leşa! And who is Adam Neamțu?Just a poor little teacher!

(Zornăit de galbeni, pe masa)

Un ţăran:Straşnic om trebuie să mai fie şi ăsta, când bea vin cu vadra!

Adam:Hei crâşmare, ţi-e frică de haiduci? N-avea grijă, omule, că nu avem de-a

face cu de-ai ca tine... Sunt alţii, care ni se potrivesc nouă!Toarnă vinul în pahar, şi bea şi tu, să ne veselim, şi-ţi petrece

alături de noi!

(Exterior. Noapte, pe una din străzile satului. Paşi precauţi, şovăitori).

Sinesie the haiduc:I’m a friend of Adam Neamţu. Give me two hundred gold coins of the

reward money and I will betray Adam.

Constable 1:Adam Neamţu?... Do not hold us for fools!...

Constable 2:But if you show us his hideout and we get hold of him, know that you will

be well rewarded.

Sinesie the haiduc:Tomorrow, or the day after, I’ll hand him in!

(Music, door slamming and being locked.)

Scene X

(Interior, a small and wet cell. Imprisoned, weakened, Adam can barely speak).

Adam:I know I won’t last much longer... I have only one wish: tell Ileana to bring

my plum cider, to soften my soul. That’s all I want!Tell that to Ileana!

Constable 1:Alright, I’ll tell her.

(A Musical Accent, Prison escape)

(After some time. Exterior, forest. Adam runs through the forest.)

Lăzărică:Hold on, who are you?

Adam:Is that you, Lăzărică? Let’s not linger, someone might find out I escaped.

(Rapid steps, climbing to the cave)

(Interior. Cave.)

Pandurul 1:Care eşti tu şi ce voieşti?

Haiducul Sinesie:Sînt ortacul lui Adam Neamţu. Să-mi daţi mie două sute de galbeni

meniţi pentru trădarea lui Adam şi am să vi-l predau.

Pandurul 1:Pe Adam Neamţu?... Să nu ne ţii tu pe noi de proşti!...

Pandurul 2: Dar dacă ne arăţi ascunzătoarea lui şi punem mâna pe dânsul, să ştii că

vei fi bine răsplătit.

Haiducul Sinesie:Mâine, poimâine, am să vi-l predau!

(Muzică, uşă trântită care se încuie.)

Scena X

(Interior, celulă mică şi umedă. Intemniţat, slăbit, Adam abia mai poate vorbi).

Adam:Ştiu că nu o voi duce mult… am o singură dorinţă: spuneţi-i Ilenei să-mi

aducă chisăliţă de prună, să-mi mai îndulcesc sufletul oleacă.Atâta mai doresc! Spune-i atât Ilenei!

Pandurul 1:Bine, o să-i spun.

(Accent muzical, Fuga din închisoare.)

(Trece o vreme. Exterior, padure. Adam fuge prin pădure.)

Lăzărică:Stai, cine eşti?

Adam:Tu eşti Lăzărică? Să nu zăbovim, că pot prinde veste c-am fugit.

(Paşi repezi, urcă spre peşteră)

(Interior. Peşteră.)

All haiducs:Long live the Captain!

Adam sits near the fire.

A haiduc:Smart as a whip is Ileana, Captain. She informed us that she will take

care of the rope, and that constables should be our concern!!!

Lăzărică:By God’s grace... And we also put our shoulder and gun to work...!

A haiduc:Who sold you out, Captain?

Adam:Leave it be! He’ll get his just reward!

(Interior. The inn is full.)

Lăzărică:(Sits for a moment, then decides:)

How much would you give me if I took you to Adam Neamţu’s hiding place?

Constable 1:A hundred gold coins will be yours, and you’ll enjoy your freedom.

Lăzărică:Alright, that suits me!

Toţi haiducii:Trăiască căpitanul!

Adam se aşează lângă foc.

Un haiduc:Isteaţă foc, Ileana, căpitane. Ne-a dat de veste că de frânghie are grijă ea,

de panduri să avem noi grijă!!!

Lăzărică:A dat Dumnezeu… Şi am mai pus şi noi umărul şi arma…!

Un haiduc:Şi cine te-a vândut, căpitane?

Adam:Lasă-l acum! Pentru faptă şi răsplată!

Scena XI

(Interior. Cârciumă plină.)

MUZICA (06. Doina - Lăutarul) - instrumental

Lăzărică:Mai dă încoa’ încă o cană cu vin...

(Aruncă lăutarului galbeni cu pumnul).

(Pandurii se apropie de Lăzărică şi-l înconjoară):

Pandurul 2:Lăzărică, în numele legii – să te predai!

Lăzărică:(stă o clipă pe gânduri, apoi hotărăşte:)

Cât îmi daţi dacă vă duc la ascunzătoarea lui Adam Neamţu?

Pandurul 1:O sută de galbeni vor fi ai tăi şi la urmă te vei bucura de libertate.

Lăzărică:Bine, aşa mă învoiesc!

(Lăzărică stands up, heads to the shelter of the outlaws. He whistles in sign of recognition. Adam’s people surround the constables. Groans, moans, screaming.

Constables flee through the forest).

Constable 2:He fooled us, the bastard!

Constable 1(stops running, breathes heavily. Whispers):

We are the men of the law. How do we go out in the village in this state, and with our hands tied?

Scene XII

(MUSIC )

(Winter, blizzard. Interior. The door opens, travellers enter, the door closes.)

Adam:Hello, Mother. Would you be so kind as to give us shelter, you see,

we are travellers from afar...

Old woman:Oh dear me, but of course! Come on, enter! Come on, let old me

put something on the table, I’m sure you’re hungry! Come on, help yourselves!... Over there is the empty bed, rest!

(Adam and Lăzărică fall asleep quickly. Snoring).

Scene XII A

(Exterior, banging on the gate. Fast steps. Armed constables.)

Constable 1:Hello, granny. Have you, by any chance, seen two armed

men passing by, not long ago?

The old woman:Yes, of course? And not only that, but they are here seeking shelter. And I

took them in, the poor things!

(The constables barge in where the haiducs are.)

(Lăzărică se ridică, se îndreaptă spre adăpostul haiducilor. Fluieră semnul de recunoaştere. Oamenii lui Adam înconjoară pandurii. Îmbrânceli, gemete, ţipete.

Pandurii fug prin pădure).

Pandurul 2:Ne-a tras pe sfoară, nemernicul!

Pandurul 1(se oprește cu sufletul la gură. Pe șoptite):

Sîntem oamenii legii. Cum să aparem în sat despuiațiși cu mâinile legate?

Scena XII

(MUZICĂ)

(Iarnă, viscol. Interior. Se deschide uşa, intră drumeţii, uşa se închide.)

Adam:Bună ziua, maică. Nu cumva ai fi bună să ne dai un mic adăpost,

că vezi, suntem nişte drumeţi...

Bătrâna:Vai dă mine, dar cum să nu! Haida, pofciț! Haida, să vă pună c’eva maica

pră masă, că îţ fi flămândz cu maica! Haida, pofciţ dă mâncaţ!… Iaca acolo îi patu’ gol... oginițî-vă, cu maica!

(Adam şi Lăzărică adorm repede. Sforăituri).

Scena XII A

(Exterior, bătăi în poartă. Paşi repezi. Panduri înarmaţi.)

Pandurul 1:Bunicuţo, nu ai văzut cumva doi oameni înarmaţi trecând

de curând prin apropiere?

Bătrâna:Da, cum să nu-i văd? Că iaca, baș la mine or vinit să capce culcuș. Şî io

i-am primit, sărac’ii dă ei!

(Pandurii dau buzna peste haiduci.)

Constable 2:In the name of the law, surrender yourselves!

(Adam and Lăzărică jump up, all drowsy from sleeping. Constables arrest them.)

Constable 2:A severe sentence awaits you, just so you know, twenty years long!

(The door of the prison slams. It latches.)

Act IIScene I

(MUSIC (07 Adam’s song))

ADAM’S SONG (AFTER 20 YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT)

Adam:Auzi valea cum răsună, eu cu mîndra n-o duc bună

Auzi cum răsună valea, mîndra nu-mi mai ţine caleaLeano, Leano, gură dulce, gîndul la tine mă duce.

Dintre zidurile reci nu văd codru, nici poteciNu te văd Leano pe tine, creşte fiul fără mineMama de dor să topeşte, celula mucigăieşte.

Că de ani întregi la rînd eu stau trist şi necăjitÎn celula neagră, strâmtă, mi-o rămas inima frîntăDin celula întunecoasă, nu văd soare, nu văd casă.

Adam:Woman!!!

(A neighbour comes)

A peasant:Oh, Adam, Adam!... You were so ill-fated! A 20-year prison sentence and some to this day enjoy the money that you and your friends gathered.

Adam:Well, that’s the way things sometimes go: some work their entire lifetime

and have nothing, while others gather fortunes doing nothing...

A peasant:Since you came, Adam, did you not go see Iosum Cătină?

Adam:No Sima, no... You see, I never had the time.

A peasant:Really, I’m sorry, that you had a streak of bad luck. Cătină tried his best to bring the constables to you. I saw him with my own eyes meeting them

(Exterior. Prispa casei. Curte sărăcăcioasă).

Ileana:Bine, bine, Adame, dar cum putuşi lucra fără de cap? Din atâţia bani ce ţi-au trecut prin mâini, nu putuşi să păstrezi măcar ceva pentru zilele

negre? Că uite, zău, am răsufla şi noi mai uşor.

Adam:Muiere!!!

(Vine un vecin)

Un ţăran:Ăi, Adame, Adame!... Ră soartă-ai avut! 20 dă ani în robie grea, şî unii să

dăzmiardă după plac cu c’eai strâns tu șî priecenii tăi.

Adam:Apoi dă, aşa se întâmplă câteodată: unii muncesc o viaţă întreagă şi n-au

nimica, în vreme ce alţii pe nemuncite stăpânesc avuţii mari…

Un ţăran:Dă când ai venit, Adame, n-ai mai dat pe la Iosum Cătină?

Adam:Nu Simo, nu... Că vezi, nici nu am avut când.

Un ţăran:Dzău, mi jăli, că pră răle mâni ai aj’uns. Cătina s-o trugit din răspuceri

să vă gea pră mânile pandurilor. L-am vădzut cu ochii mei că s-o întânit noapcea pră margina râului cu pandurii, dar vedz – am tăcut! C’ine ar fi

spus că el o să vă vindă?

Adam:Simo, ce vorbeşti tu?

Un ţăran:C’e să vorbesc?... Vorbesc aia c’e vorbesc toţ oamenii din aretu’ nostru!

MUSIC (08 Green Sheet of leaf, Curly Hair) - Instrumental

(A haiduc and Adam are drinking.)

A haiduc:God forgive poor Lăzărică, he was a fine man!

Adam:Let God forgive his sins, what a brave man he was! With twenty men like

him you could have ransacked an entire corner of the country!

Adam:You know what, brother Gheorghe? I cannot take it anymore. This peaceful

life kills me. I feel the forest calling again. The bastards have multiplied, the times have gotten hard again, and the poor impoverished peasant is left moaning... The world feels our absence, brother Gheorghe, we need to put an end to the wickedness. How can we let Iosum Cătina enjoy our treasures and

oppress the poor peasant? Won’t Our Heavenly Father condemn us?

A haiduc:That’s right, Captain!... I will follow you till I fall to the ground.

And others will join you at the Cave Rol, and they will go to the forest and follow the known paths like we did in our youth!

Scene IV

(Exterior. Horses gallop. Noise, cries, shots, groans, screaming. The horsemen mount their horses, they start the chase. The haiducs rob again.)

Scene V

(Exterior, forest, night).

A haiduc:Captain, a damned spy traced us. Our people followed him, but they could not get hold of him. I wouldn’t be surprised if this devil’s servant of a spy

does not stop until he tells the army chief.Adam:

Then we’ll go somewhere else.Brothers, find the right place to hide our money!

(Money is being hidden. Horse hoofbeats).

Scena III

MUZICĂ (08. Foaie verde păr sucit) instrumental

(Haiducul si Adam beau.)

Un haiduc:Dumnezeu să-l ierte pe bietul Lăzărică, că de treabă om mai era!

Adam:Să-l ierte Dumnezeu că viteaz mai era! Cu douăzeci ca el ai

fi putut prăda un colţ de ţară!

Adam:Şti ce, frate Gheorghe? Nu mai pot să rabd. Viaţa asta liniştită mă omoară.

Simt că mă cheamă din nou codrul. Ticăloşii s-au înmulţit, vremurile s-au înăsprit din nou, iar bietul ţăran, săracul, geme… Este lipsă de noi, este mare lipsă de noi, frate Gheorghe, ca să punem stăvilă răutăţilor.

Cum să lăsăm noi pe Iosum Cătină să se lăfăie în comorile noastre şi să asuprească pe bietul ţăran? Oare nu ne va osândi şi Cel de sus?

Un haiduc:Aşa e, căpitane!... Eu te voi însoţi până voi pica la pământ.

Şi te-or însoţi şi alţii la peştera Rolului,şi-om bate cărările şi codrii ca în tinereţe!

Scena IV

(Exterior. Galop de cai. Gălăgie, strigăte, împuşcături, gemete, tipete. Călăreţii urcă pe cai, o iau la goană. Haiducii jefuiesc din nou.)

Scena V

(Exterior, pădure, noapte).

Adam:Păcatele mele nu v-or fi fiind aşa de grele, după cum mi le-au socotit

domnii pământeşti... Totuşi e bine ca omul să fie grijit înainte de a apuca pe drumul veşniciei.

Preotul:Ei bine, aţi fost condamnaţi la spânzurătoare! Dar aţi mai avut dreptul de

a cere graţierea de la Măria Sa!

Adam:La ce folos... Împăratul e prea departe...

Preotul:Da, poate aşa ţi-a fost scris.

Adam:Nu, părinte! Omul îşi croieşte singur soarta. Am dus o viaţă de haiduc şi nu-
