Once you have the right gear, we have a few suggestions for you. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers should check out the trails at Mayor Baxter Woods, Capisic Pond Park, Riverton Trolley Park and Evergreen Cemetery Woods. Follow the miles and miles of trails from Oat Nuts Park to the Presumpscot River Preserve and you’ll be rewarded with a view of the Presumpscot Falls. And for groomed cross-country classic and skate trails, check out the Riverside Snow Park at Riverside Golf Course.Riverside Snow Park also has hills for snowboarding, sledding and tubing. The same is true near the Back Cove at Payson Terrain Park. And Eastern Prom Hill is a great place to sled, tube, telemark ski, cross-country ski and snowshoe. For other opportunities, Portland Trails offers maps of the trail systems and occasional guided walks/hikes.

Sharpen your blades, lace up your skates and take a spin on the ice at Deering Oaks Park, Nason’s Corner/Breakwater School Pond, Payson Park and Riverside Snow Park. At Riverside, the rink is lit for night skating.

Don’t forget to capture the memories of your outdoor winter experiences with photographs. For equipment and accessories, stop in at the Photo Market on Forest Avenue. The Photo Market is Maine’s largest professional independent camera store and offers photo processing as well as digital service. Before you head home, stop at the Harbor Fish Market to purchase fresh seafood for lunch or dinner. Since 1969, the Alfiero family has been selling seafood to locals from their waterfront landmark. They’ll even cook your lobsters or pack your purchase for travel. f

Catch a

WINTER WAVE

Temperature dipping into the teens. Bitter winds blowing. Swells forming. It’s time to go surfing. Winter surfing.

It’s invigorating if you love to surf in the winter. But to do so, you need the following equipment: surfboard or other wave riding vehicle (boogie board, hand plane, SUP, etc.), a winter wetsuit which is usually between 4 to 6 millimeters (mm) thick, booties that are 5 to 7 mm thick, gloves 5 to 7 mm thick, and a love for being cold. Remember, there’s nothing but six or so millimeters of neoprene between you and the elements.

To purchase gear, check out the inventory at The Boathouse in Falmouth and Black Point Surf Shop in Scarborough. These folks surf so they know what works. They know how important it is to be warm before you enter the icy water.

Oh, it can get expensive, but if you want to be prepared, it is best to buy new equipment and take care of it. Initial costs for wetsuit, gloves and booties: around $300-$500. With the wetsuit, which has an attached hood, the only exposed skin area is the eyes, nose and mouth. To protect this area from frostbite or windburn, vaseline helps to wick away water. Winter sessions tend to be around one to two hours long. Any longer and hypothermia is a risk. When your teeth start to chatter, it’s time to call it a day.

The best places to go in Maine are Higgins Beach in Scarborough, Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk, and Long Sands in York. These places offer easy access and free parking close to the beach.

Pay attention to details, purchase the right gear, adjust your technique to fit the conditions, and enjoy the challenge and beauty that winter surfing brings. Winter swells, pristine ocean, wind, snow and you--and maybe a cup of tea, glass of wine or bottle of beer afterwards. f

Cushy Alpaca Softness Fends Off Winter Chill by Leigh Macmillen Hayes

When you head outside to play in Maine’s winter wonderland, you’ll want a shield between you and the harsh elements. Amazingly, that shield is readily

available and provided by a camelid who has lived in our midst only since the early 1980s.

Our most fashionable four-legged resident in the State of Maine is the alpaca. Imported from South America, this animal has a naturally luxurious fiber and was once used to clothe Inca royalty. “It’s a great animal with great fiber,” says Stacey Whitton of Abbott Farm in Cumberland. Stacey and her husband, Tom Munroe, acquired alpacas almost five years ago, intent on farming for fiber. They began with a herd of 24 and today have 41 alpacas.

Unlike its counterpart--sheep’s wool—alpaca fiber has no lanolin, and therefore requires less processing with chemical cleaners and dyes. This fiber has very small scales, reducing the itchy reaction most people have with other natural fiber. Alpaca fiber is considered to be hypo-allergic; it’s also lighter and warmer than wool.

The fine fiber has individual air pockets in the core. The air acts as an insulator and the fiber breathes, wicking moisture and retaining warmth even when wet. That thermal quality allows it to maintain the perfect temperature around your body as you move about on a winter day, whether you are a dog sledder, hiker, skier, hunter, ice fisherman, snowshoer, snowboarder, rock climber or extreme outdoor sports enthusiast.

Huacaya alpacas are known for their crimpy fiber, which contributes to the bulk and loft of the yarn. This crimp, in the spun yarn, increases strength. The yarns made from alpaca are fine, soft and smooth to touch. In fact, it feels as soft as cashmere. And Stacey says it’s many times warmer than wool.

Our huskies are well cared for on a 24/7 basis and return all the love we lavish on them. They get us outdoors, keep us focused on a goal, whether conditioning and training a team for trips or a race, and keep us in good physical shape with the exercise it requires to care for them properly.

Dogsledding is one of the most exciting yet peaceful ways to travel in the winter. The dogs’ enthusiasm to pull is contagious to the musher, yet the peaceful serenity of the surrounding nature takes you back to a nearly primeval feeling of closeness to the land and bond between humans and animals working together. Their lovable personalities will quickly win your heart. In no time, you’ll discover it is an addictive sport for both animal lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Having grown up in South China, Maine, and spent years in Alaska and the Yukon Territory, I learned to mush dogs in the bush. I chose to return to Maine and run guided trips in the Umbagog Lake and Mahoosuc Mountain areas in order to share this opportunity with other people. Some clients get “hooked” on the sport and purchase their own dogs to start a team, while others join us for a yearly trip to experience that thrill of standing on the runners.

Guided trips may last for 20 minutes, a full day, an overnight or for multiple days. Make some time for ice fishing and ice skating. And for the Nordic skiers and snowshoers in your crowd, try the 27 kilometers of groomed trails at Five Fields Farm X-C Ski Center in Bridgton. Equipment rentals are available and there is a warming hut.

Recreation includes snowmobiling along the lakes and through the woods. Need a meal or a snack while out on the trail? Stop by Melby’s in Waterford or A.J.’s Everything in Stoneham. We highly recommend the bison burgers at the first and gingerbread whoopie pies at the latter.

Check the calendars of the Lakes Environmental Association, Loon Echo Land Trust and Greater Lovell Land Trust. They all offer guided snowshoe treks and their docents will help you experience the wonders of the winter forest. This is a great way to get outside, get some exercise and get off the beaten track.

on Route 26 in Mechanic Falls is Maine’s newest winter outdoor destination. Entrepreneur and Harvest Hill Farms owner, Peter Bolduc, is very optimistic about the upcoming 2012-13 winter snowfall. “We’re due for a good old fashioned snowy winter,” stated Bolduc in a recent interview regarding his development of the route 26 property into a 4 season destination. The 300 acre winter park at the farm will feature cross-country skiing trails along with snowshoeing trails, an ice skating pond and an ice hockey rink. Bolduc is also planning to create “ice skating trails” around the farm. Bolduc went on to say that this is a truly unique way to experience the beautiful Maine winter that he first discovered in Quebec Province. He is also working on hosting a vintage snowmobile weekend and race. Harvest Hill Farms is also the home of the Field of Dreams Summer Fun park and 3 Halloween themed attractions: Pumpkin Land, Big Corn Maze Adventure and The Gauntlet Haunted Night Ride. In the frosty months, outdoor enthusiasts will find a multitude of events in Rangeley, a premiere winter destination. The Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club sponsors the annual

SNODEO, a celebration of all things snowmobile, on January 24-26. The weekend includes family snowmobile rides, a snowmobile stunt show, radar run, casino night and other activities. Also that weekend, the Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce hosts a Chili/Chowder Cook Off. The club grooms over 150 miles of trails for your enjoyment.

Don’t miss the Saddleback Mountain Challenge on February 9, a 7-mile, 1,800 vertical randonee or ski mountaineering style race. And on February 21, the Saddleback Ski Patrol will host its annual torchlight parade.

Strap on your skinny skis, grab some poles and head out on the 55 kilometers of groomed trails at the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center. Or snowshoe and bird watch along Saddleback Lake. The Center will host the 16th annual legendary Rangeley Lakes Loppet on Saturday, March 2. The races include a 25k and 50k Freestyle, 25K Classic, and 25K Touring Division. Ski and snowshoe rentals are available in the rustic yurt lodge at the center. In the yurt you’ll also find hot and cold beverages, snacks and hot soup for sale.

For some indoor family entertainment, check out Moose Alley, Rock, Roll, Bowl on Main Street. Arrive via snowmobile and enjoy the state-of-the-art bowling alley, billiards and arcade games, or relax on the comfy couches while watching television from one of the many screens located throughout. Bands from Portland and Boston perform here on weekends.

At the end of the day, get some rest at either the Rangeley Saddleback Inn or the Town and Lake Motel and Cottages. The Saddleback Inn is the closest off mountain lodging to Saddleback Mountain Ski Area. After a day playing outdoors and in, guests relax in the family game room, indoor pool and Jacuzzi. The Town and Lake Motel and Cottages are open year round and located on Rangeley Lake.

OquossocThe Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club (RLSC) has been

incorporated for over 25 years. The Club consists of four officers and 10 directors. It had 350 members in

2011, the second most of all registered snowmobile clubs in Maine. The club manages 150 miles of trails. The trails include sections of two of the State of Maine’s most popular trails, ITS (Interconnected Trail System) 84 and ITS 89. There are two main hubs to the Rangeley trail system, one in the Town of Rangeley and the other in the Village of Oquossoc. There is plenty of trail accessible parking, food, snowmobile services, lodging and gas in both hubs. The trail system ranges east to Phillips, north to Stratton and Eustis and west to the New Hampshire border. At the southern corner of the system. Riders will find Corridor Trail 117, which connects the Rangeley Region to Rumford, Mexico, Andover and Grafton Notch among other towns.

The RLSC budget averages $170,000 annually with about $150,000 going directly toward trail maintenance and trail grooming. The club averages 1700 hours of grooming each year. It operates three large grooming tractors covering the entire 150 miles of trail every two days. Rangeley offers one of the longest snowmobile seasons in Maine. On average, the trails open just before the Christmas Break and close at the end of March. During the 2011 season, the trails remained open until mid-April. Riders are attracted to the Regions by the wide, well- groomed trails, the scenery of mountainous Western Maine and by trail conveniences. Over the past few years, popular rides

A rider’s paradiseinclude the Rangeley Lake Loop, a 65-mile loop around the lake connecting Rangeley and Oquossoc. Riding to the summit of East Kennebago Mountain is also very popular. The summit trail reaches nearly 3800 feet and offers good views, plenty of Canadian Jays to share your snacks with, and an occasional friendly fox. From Oquossoc, the most popular ride is up to Bosebuck Camps and the NH border. The Camps offer food, gas and lodging and this year, there will be a new loop ride around Parmachenee Lake. Other popular rides include visits to several places in Eustis and Stratton for food and gas, Colburn Gore on the Canadian border and to the location on every rider’s list, Grand Falls.

The RLSC hosts Rangeley’s Annual winter Festival, SNODEO. This year, it occurs January 24, 25, and 26. Over February Vacation, the Club offers a Snowmobile Safety Course and a daylong ride for anyone new to snowmobiling. The dates for these events are not set but the club’s web site provides riders with dates and up to date weather and trail conditions. Skiing or snowshoeing through the hemlocks and pines bent with snow makes for a magical experience.The fitness element also appeals to many. Like swimming and rowing,

both of these sports offer an excellent workout with minimum effort.

This can be either a time for aerobic exercise or a deeper appreciation of the season enjoyed at a comfortable pace. Going solitary, treasure your sense of adventure as you listen to the crunch of your skis gripping the groomed track, breaking the silence of the forest. Or join friends who appreciate a low-impact sport and the opportunity to chit chat. The same is true for snowshoeing. I find it is as much fun to explore the winter world

on my own, looking for animal signs and other wonders of winter, as it is to go on a snowshoe hike with family and friends. And there’s also the geocache component. Some geocaches are hidden so winter explorers will locate them.

Whatever experience you choose, cross country skiing and snowshoeing are gentle sports that allow you to set your own pace. The exciting 2012 USCC Lake Parlin 100 Snowmobile Race will take place on Saturday, January 26, 2012 at Parlin Pond hosted by Coburn Summit Riders. Ask any 10 people on the streets of small town America about Patten or Shin Pond in Maine, and chances are pretty good that they have heard of these places.

Once, just a small logging community, this is now a four-season recreation destination for many who live and work in the more urban areas of the state and country.

Richmond, on the banks of the Kennebec River, is lovely in the winter. The waterfront and historic district provide a scenic backdrop for winter outdoor activities.

In the 19th century Richmond was a booming shipbuilding town, and magnificent Victorian and Greek revival homes were built. In addition, during the 1950s and 1960s, a large number of Russian and other eastern European immigrants settled in Richmond and the most visible reminder of this is a distinctive

Russian Orthodox Church, which continues to hold services today. With its network of sidewalks and walk able layout, you can stroll the village, enjoy the town’s living history, and pop in for a delicious meal or quench your thirst in one of Richmond’s many fine eating establishments.

For those who enjoy snowmobiling, Richmond has 27 miles of groomed trails to ride on. Richmond is not only a playground for avid snowmobilers, but cross-country skiers and snowshoer’s can explore Pleasant Pond, the Town Forest on Dingley Road, the Merrymeeting Bay Wildlife Management Area on Route 24, and other public lands.

He also offers dozens and dozens of individually cut and finished puzzles for all ages.Another unique business is the Olde Thyme Primitives shop in Palermo, which is owned and operated by experienced artisan and retailer Debbie Pomelow. The origins of ice climbing date back to the medieval alpine shepherds who moved herds across high mountain passes. These early mountaineers chopped long series of steps using a long ice axe fashioned by combining a shepherd’s staff with a woodcutter’s axe and wore nailed boots for traction. Mountain guide Jon Tierney believes that anyone who likes being outside in winter and has a reasonable degree of fitness can be successful climbing ice. “The learning curve for ice climbing is easier than rock climbing because you can put your crampons and ice axes almost anywhere” Tierney says. Jon has been guiding and teaching ice climbing since the eighties. He has even taken clients to western China to tackle first ascents of difficult ice climbs and mountain peaks. Jon is one of 80 fully certified international mountain guides working in the US (IFMGA) and the only one residing in Maine.If you are interested in learning to ice climb, instruction is essential. Hiring a professional guide is the surest and fastest way of learning to ice climb safely. Jon’s school, Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School offers daily instruction in Acadia National Park, Camden Hills, and the Sugarloaf and Sunday River regions as well as over the border in the White Mountains.
