GamesCircle GamesPirates KeysChoose a child to be the pirate. All the children (except the pirate) sit cross legged on the floor in a circle.

The pirate can either sit cross-legged in the middle of the circle or lay on the floor face down, either way the child will be blind-folded and have a large bunch of keys on the floor in front of him/her.

The member of staff in charge will tap a child on the head and that child becomes the raider. The raider will attempt to creep up and take the keys and then return to their place, without the pirate hearing them. The pirate has three chances to point to where he thinks the raider is but he/she can only do this IF they hear the raider. If he/she is successful, the raider becomes the pirate.

Wink MurderChildren sit in a circle on the carpet and a staff member chooses a detective. The detective goes outside whilst you choose the murderer. When the murderer winks at you in the circle, you must play dead. The detective then must try and catch the murder. You can also add in ‘dramatic deaths’ and other dimensions such as more detectives or more murderers.

Down In The JungleSong – “Down in the jungle where nobody goes, there’s a big fat gorilla picking his nose, and he picks and he flicks it to see where it goes, who’s gonna get that, who’s gonna get that who’s gonna get that slimy snot!”

Children sit in a circle and place their right hand on top of the hand of the child that is sat next to them. One child starts off with the snot and passes it to the child on their left. All the children continue this whilst singing a song. When the song finishes the child with the snot gets to wipe it on another Brownie. The first time you get the snot you lose one hand. The second time you have to turn around but get both hands back. The third time you lose a hand again.

Granny’s KnickersThe children sit in a circle. One child sits middle of the circle and everyone in the circle takes it in turns to ask him/her a question e.g. what did you have for breakfast? The child in the middle is only allowed to answer ‘granny’s knickers”’ and they must not laugh or smile. If they laugh or smile they have to change places with the child whose question made them laugh.

CornersSelect one student to be ‘it’. That person closes his or her eyes while the rest of the students go to one of the four corners in the classroom. When all students are settled in a corner, ‘it’ calls out a number. All the kids who chose that corner are out of the game and must sit down.

Zip Zap BoingClear a space for a circle of children at arm’s length from each other. Zip - continues around circle in current direction. Zap change direction. Boing "NAME" - Bounce across circle to named person. All of these actions are accompanied by a definite point towards the next player. Incorrect action renders a player OUT. Out players sit on side and watch to catch others out.

21 questionsOne child thinks of something. It could be anything, or there might be rules limiting what can be used. The others players have 21 yes or no questions to ask that child to try to guess whatever that child had thought of. Another child thinks of another thing, and play continues until you decide to stop

Musical Chairs etc.The chairs are set up in a circle facing outwards (one chair less than the number of players). The music is turned on, and the players walk around the chairs. When the music stops the players race to sit in the available chairs. The player left standing is taken out of the game. The players all stand again and a chair is removed. The music is started and the walk around the chairs begins again. This procedure is continued until only one person remains. This person is the winner.

Cone gameSpread cones out randomly in an area, making sure to leave several yards of distance between cones. Split players into 2 even teams. One team will try to place them upside down (Down Team), while the other team will try to set them right side up (Up Team). Game continues for however long activity leaders seem fit.

SplatChildren stand in a circle and one child is chosen to stand in the middle to be the ‘splat master’. The splat master will point to a child and shout splat. The child who is being pointed at must duck down and the two children either side of her must shoot each other by shouting

Page 7: Activity Booklet - staff.oxfordactive.co.ukstaff.oxfordactive.co.uk/.../uploads/2018/01/Activity-Boo…  · Web view1. Activity Booklet. Oxford Active. 12/1/17. Table of Contents.

splat. The child that shouted splat the slowest is out. Another way a child might be out is if they don’t duck down quick enough when they are pointed at. Also, if a child ducks or shouts splat and they are not either being pointed at or next to the person being pointed at, they will be out (misfire). When there are only two children left they go back to back in the middle of the circle. The splat master chooses a magic word which when said the children must turn and try and shoot each other by saying splat. Each time the splat master says a word that is not the magic word the children take one step away from each other. The winner is the last Brownie left in the game.

Chinese WhispersChildren will sit in a circle together, and a child/ staff member will think of a sentence which will be passed around the group, through whispering in each child’s ear. For example the brown fox jumped over the green frog.

This sentence will be passed around the circle until they reach the person who made the sentence up. When this person is reached he/she will tell the group what was whispered in to his/her ear and whether it is correct or not.

21You may say 1-3 numbers at a time one after another round the circle and you must count to 21. If someone says one number it carries on to the person to their right. If they say two numbers it then reverses to the person to their left. If they say 3 numbers it skips a person. If somebody says the wrong number or makes any other kind of mistake you go back to 1. If you make it to 21 the person who is forced to say 21 loses/ wins they can then make a new rule for eg. Instead of saying the number 5 you have to say “fathers” , so its 1…2…3..4..fathers.

21 ShoutIn a group (this can be done whilst walking between activities or in a circle) you have to count to 21 in order however you cannot organise yourselves and people have to shout out. If two people shout out at the same time you go back to 1.

Duck Duck GooseAll children need to sit in a circle apart from one child who will start the game. The selected child will walk around the outside of the circle tapping each child gently on the head and says, "duck" or "goose."

The child whose head has been tapped when the child says "goose" runs around the circle chasing the child who said "goose." The child who is being chased tries to get back to the place of the child who he/she just said "goose" to before being tagged.

If he/she gets tagged before he/she sits down he/she must sit in the middle of the circle in the "goose pot." The game can be played without the "goose pot" if young children are playing.

The Wording can be changed to anything the child wishes.

Time BombChildren who are taking part in the activity will stand/sit in a circle. The play leader will pass the ball to a child and that child will throw the ball to someone in the circle.

The ball continues being thrown from child to child until someone drops the ball. When this happens the “bomb” will begin to tick and staff will count down from 10 to 0. (Encouragement of children to count down will help their numeracy skills and becomes exciting!) Children will continue to throw the ball during countdown and the child that has last touched the ball or is holding the ball when 0 is reached, is out of the game and play will continue.

Pass The ClapAll Children need to be stood in a circle. One person starts with the “clap” in their hands and turns to face a person next to them. When they make eye contact or just when they are facing each other, they clap simultaneously. Then, that next person has the clap and turns to pass it on. After it has been passed around once and everyone has the hang of it, encourage people to move around, jump into a different part of the circle, and reverse it.

Mine RingAll the children stand in a circle holding hands facing inwards. A member of staff (the mine) stands in the centre. The children as a team have to move out of the way so that the member of staff doesn’t bump into them. If they do they “blow up”.

Action IntrosGet all children to stand in a circle. Have one person start by saying an action and their name. The action should start with the same letter as their name, like energetic Eric or jumping Jill.

When they say their action and name, they can also act out their action. So, jumping Jill would jump up and down. Have the entire group go around and repeat everyone’s actions and names each time a new person introduces him or herself.

Two Truths And A LieGo around the group and have everyone say two true statements about themselves and one false. The rest of the group has to guess which one is false. If participants find it hard to think on the spot, give them a piece of paper and let them write it down. Then throw the paper into the middle of the circle so you have to guess who the person is and what is false. You may be surprised. You can learn some

crazy things about each other!

I Went To The Supermarket Game starts by saying ‘when I went to the supermarket I bought…’ This is when the first person would choose something you buy from the supermarket beginning with ‘A’ i.e. apples. The second person then says ‘when I went to the supermarket I bought some apples and some ….’ the second person would then choose something beginning with ‘b’ (i.e. bacon), the third person would then say ‘When I went to the supermarket I bought some apples, some bacon and some ……’ and would choose an item beginning with ‘c’. When someone can’t remember all the items bought they are out. You can play the same game but just choosing shopping items not in alphabetical order.

Good Afternoon Your MajestyChoose a child to go and sit on a throne which faces away from your circle of children. Let them put on a crown and be the Queen/King. Get a servant to approach them by indicating that it is their turn by pointing to them(making sure no one gives away who it is). Get the child you pointed to creep up behind the Queen/King and to say "Good Afternoon Your Majesty" in a silly voice whilst the person on the throne has to guess who it was. If the child can guess who it was from the voice, they get a round of applause and a chorus of "Congratulations Your Majesty" from the rest of the class and the child who crept up gets a go.

NESW (North, East, South, West)In a hall or set out area, set four points which are compass points. Shout out a point and children to that point.Adaptations: change the name of the points, reverse the points e.g. shout south but run to north.

ConquestEvery child picks a country and tells the leader in private. You sit them down and say which countries have been chosen but not who chose them. One child will pick another child and guess their country. If they are correct then they have conquered them. If not the person they chose gets to guess someone new.

ConsequencesHave the players sit in a circle; each person is provided with a half sheet of notepaper and a pencil. Have each person write on the top (1) one or more adjectives.

Fold the paper over, so that what has been written cannot be seen. Keep passing the papers. Every player has to pass his or her paper on to the right-hand neighbor, and all have then to write on the top of the paper which has been passed by the left-hand neighbor: (2) "the name of the man;" after having done this, the paper must again be folded and passed on as before; this time must be written (3) one or more adjectives; then (4) a woman's name; next (5), where they met; next (6), what he gave her; next (7), what he said to her; next (8), what she said to him; next (9), the consequence; and lastly (10), what the world said about it.

Be careful that every time anything has been written, the paper is folded down and passed on to the player on your right. When everyone has written what the world says, the papers are collected and a spokesperson proceeds to read out the various papers. As an example, an end result can read something like this: (1) The horrifying and delightful (2) Mr. Brown (3) met the charming (4) Miss Philips (5) in Lincoln Park; (6) he gave her a flower (7) and said to her: "How's your mother?" (8) She said to him: "I'm sick of eating hamburgers"; and (9) the consequence was they won the hot-dog eating competition, and the world said (10), "Just what we expected."

Drawing WhispersPictionary mixed with Chinese Whispers.First person writes a sentence/phrase on a piece of paper; next person draws a picture from that sentence. Fold the paper over so the first sentence cannot be seen. Next person writes a sentence underneath the picture of what the picture is of. Fold over the picture so next person draws a picture from the sentence before.

MafiaThe narrator tells the towns people to go to sleep and everyone closes their eyes. They then announce that one tap will stand for mafia and two taps will stand for angel. The narrator quietly walks around the circle and chooses two people for the jobs of mafia and angel, giving them the appropriate number of taps to let them know. The narrator then says out loud "Mafia Wake Up". The mafia opens their eyes. The narrator says "Choose someone to kill" and the mafia points at who they choose to kill. The narrator then tells the mafia to go back to sleep and the mafia closes their eyes. The narrator then says for the angel to wake up and to choose someone to save. The angel points at who they choose to save and then goes back to sleep. The narrator then tells the townspeople to all wake up. If they mafia and angel chose different people then the the narrator announces who the mafia chose somewhat like:"It was a very very sad night, when 'lindsey' died". Some groups play it that the narrator gets to make up a funny, elaborate story on how the person died.*If the mafia and angel choose the same person then the narrator announces that no one died. When someone does die they get the chance to guess who killed them, if they guess correctly then the game is over and the mafia loses. If they guess wrong, then another round starts.

A Frog Jumped Into The PondEach player takes it in turns to say one word from the sentence: The Frog Jumped in the Pond, Plop! (i.e. the first person says “The”, the second person says “Frog”, and so on).

Page 9: Activity Booklet - staff.oxfordactive.co.ukstaff.oxfordactive.co.uk/.../uploads/2018/01/Activity-Boo…  · Web view1. Activity Booklet. Oxford Active. 12/1/17. Table of Contents.

Once the sentence has been completed, play continues around the circle in the same manner, except that each word of the sentence must be said twice, with each person still only saying one word (i.e. now the first person says “The”, and the second person also says “The”, and the third person says “Frog”).The game is then continued, repeating each word 3 times, then 4 times, and so on. If someone makes a mistake they are out.

Indian SignsEach person thinks of their own sign or action to do. Create order in which everyone must do their sign to another in the same order. If someone forgets the order then restart.

Simon SaysOne person is designated Simon, the others are the players. Standing in front of the group, Simon tells players what they must do. However, the players must only obey commands that begin with the words "Simon Says." If Simon says, "Simon says touch your nose," then players must touch their nose. A command without the beginning “Simon says” means do not do this action.

Let’s Go Camping One player thinks of a place and the rest of the group have to work out what that place is. To do this, they make statements in turn relating to what they would take to the place. For instance, if the place chosen is a beach, and a player says, “I’m going camping and I’m taking a towel”, then because you can expect there to be towels on the beach, the player stays in. If the next person states, “I’m going camping and I’m taking a TV”, they would be out since there aren't any televisions on the beach. The game comes to an end when somebody correctly guesses the place. However, if someone makes an incorrect guess, they are out. Once someone makes a correct guess, they have to choose another location and the game starts all over again.

CategoriesEach player has a piece of paper and a pencil. Each player draws a 5x5 grid on their piece of paper, leaving enough space in the boxes to be able to write words.Five categories are chosen, and each player writes them down the left side of the grid, one category per row. Categories can be almost anything, and as easy or difficult as the players wish to make them. Examples include birds, television shows, novelists, cities in Pennsylvania, and U.S. presidents.A five-letter keyword is chosen and written across the top, one letter above each column. Keywords cannot have repeating letters (e.g., PIPES would be an illegal keyword because it has two Ps). Keywords also should not include Q, X or Z, unless the players want a serious challengeThe categories and keyword may be chosen by any method the players agree to. One option is to roll a die or dice, with the highest roller choosing the keyword and the next five choosing the categories.GameplayA time limit is set, perhaps 5 or 10 minutes depending on the skill of the players. Each player tries to fill in the grid with words that fit into the categories and start with the letters of the keyword. For proper names, the last name should be used (e.g. George Bush would fit under “B” but not “G”). In cases where a person goes by only a single name (e.g. Shakira or Madonna), that name should be used.ScoringWhen the time limit expires, players compare their answers. Each block is taken up, one by one. Each player announces the word, if any, they have for that block. One point is scored for each other player who does not have the same word.If a word is of questionable legitimacy, the players should vote on whether or not to accept it.After all 25 blocks are scored, players total their points.

What Are You Doing? (Like Simon Says)A game where you say one thing but do another. This game is for 4 or more people. To play, you pretend to do an action like washing your hair or drinking tea. The person next to you then asks, "Excuse me, what are you doing? “You have to say something other than what you are really doing. So if you were pretending to brush your teeth, you could say "I'm eating pizza. “Then that person has to pretend that he's eating pizza and say something different when the next person asks him, "Excuse me, what are you doing?" If a player makes a mistake, he's out. Try to keep it going around the circle and see how fast you can go!

Rhythm MasterClap hands in a circle, one person is the rhythm master. The master changes the beat of the claps, everyone has to guess who they the master is.

Bean Bag GolfSet out tri-golf target or use hoops for zones/targets. Under arm throws to throw into targets to score points.

Smelly Onion/Duck Duck gooseHave everyone sit in a circle and name each child Ketchup, mustard, or relish. Then the leader calls out one of those items and those people stand up and must run around the circle in a designated and try to get back to their spot. The last 2 people go into the center of the circle and become smelly onions. Play until there are more smelly onions than anyone else.

Sharks and FishesForm a line at one end of the area- this is one shore line of the ocean (both ends of the area are shore lines and are the safe or free zones). A shark is chosen and that person is placed in the middle of the ocean. The shark yells out "FISHY FISHY, CROSS MY OCEAN!". The fish swim from one shore to the other- they try to avoid being tagged by the shark. The shark's job is to go after the fish. If the shark touches a fish, the fish now becomes a seaweed. The seaweed stands still (seaweed can not move its feet), and servers as a safe area for the fish. If the seaweed touches the shark, the seaweed turns back into a fish and can swim to shore. Alternatively, The seaweed could be EVIL. if a fish touches a seaweed, they also become a seaweed. This speeds up the game.

Head CatchSomeone in the middle of a circle. Person goes round the circle and shouts head or catch. If head then child must head the ball back to the person in the middle, if catch then they catch and pass it back. To make it more challenging, when head is shouted then catch it and visa versa.

Group StoryEach child starts with a piece of paper, they write a sentence at the top and pass it round the circle with each person adding an extra sentence each time. Once you have made it all the way round, stop and read them all out.

Supermarket Game“I went to supermarket and bought…”. Go round the circle and recall everything on the shopping list and add another. If the list is wrong then restart

Word Association Zombie Game Zoo Game

Word gamesCrossed, UncrossedTwo sticks/pens/pencils etc are laying on the floor crossed over or side by side. Go round the circle and ask if they are crossed or uncrossed. Regardless of the pencils, if the child’s legs are crossed then the sticks are crossed. If the child’s legs are uncrossed then the sticks are uncrossed. Pick up the sticks and put them back down as often as wanted.

21 QuestionsA member of staff will choose a child who will think of an object/ person/character etc. The rest of the group has to try and find out who/ what the chosen child is describing. The group can only ask questions which will result in a yes or no answer. For example: “Is it a person?” answer to be “yes/no”, and so on till they have enough information to guess the answer. The person who has guessed correctly will then swap places and describe their item. If it takes more than 21 attempts the player who chose the object/person wins.

Count to 21As a group, count to 21 one at a time. Anyone can call out the numbers but if two or more people say a number at the same then must restart from 0. No talking is allowed so children can’t decide who goes next. To make it harder, get everyone to cover their eyes.

Team GamesBulldogDepending on group size, children are chosen to be the ‘bulldogs’. The bulldogs stand in the middle of the play area. All remaining players stand at one end zone. The aim of the game is to run from one end zone to the other end zone on the other side of the field of play without being caught by the bulldogs. When a player is caught, they become a bulldog themselves. The winner is the last player left that hasn’t been caught.

If incorrectly guessed then they get to carry on running.

Capture The FlagField of play is split into two halves, with each team having a “base” in their own half. Two teams each have a flag (or another marker such as a bib) and the objective is to capture the other team's flag, located at the team's base, and bring it safely back to their own base. Enemy players can be "tagged" by players in their own half; these players are then, sent back to their own half "in jail” until freed by a team mate tagging them.

DodgeballField of play is split into half with equal teams on each side. Objective of each team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team. This is done by hitting them with a ball without bouncing/rolling, or catching a ball which has been thrown from the other team which has not hit the ground. If catching a ball, which doesn’t hit the floor, then a teammate can rejoin the game while the thrower sits out. To start, dodgeballs are in the middle and teams run to them after a countdown to get their first. The game is over when one team’s players have all been hit. For younger players or for safety only allow underarm throws and only hitting waist and below counts as a hit, anything above waist doesn’t count.

Cannonball AlleyVariation of dodgeball. Field of play is set up as an alley/lane with two end zones and throwers on the side of the alley. Children are chosen to be throwers on either side of the alley throwing balls at the others running from one end zone to the other end zone. Once everyone has made it to the end or got hit, those who got hit are now throwers as well and balls are reset on the side. The winner is the last person to make it back and forth to the end zones without getting hit. Like dodgeball, rules can be altered for safety and age group.

Danish Long BallMixture of rounder and cricket. Set up like normal game of rounders but instead of running around 4 bases, players must run in a diagonal direction (that’s been set out), and run back to base before the ball gets back the base or pitcher. Can be adapted to use a dodgeball or football and playing the game kicking. For safety use under arm throws.

Human BattleshipsLike the board game with humans. Put up a crash mat or equivalent barrier for when lying down players can’t see the other team. Players then lie down on floor to create their battleships. One at a time, a ball is thrown over the barrier to either hit or miss the opposing team. Winner is when all ‘battleships’ have been hit.

Staff then need to select some other children to be the lifeguards (again 2 or 3 depending on group size). The lifeguards will stand around the outside of the chute and the remaining children are the swimmers.

When the game begins, the swimmers shake the chute to create the ocean waves, the sharks grasp swimmers by the ankles and attempt to pull them in. When children are being pulled under by “sharks” they need to shout loudly LIFEGUARD, LIFEGUARD!! And the lifeguards grasp the swimmers by the hands and pull them back onto the shore before they go under. If a swimmer goes under, he/she becomes a shark.
