Welcome to the directory for the activity and well-being services.

An important health goal for all people is to maintain their ability to live independently

and to function well.

In the literature on health and wellbeing, concepts such as 'active aging' and

'successful aging' show that 'doing' activities is closely related to security and

welfare. The literature also demonstrates that being active is an important factor in

managing life and coping with the challenges related to living.

It therefore appears that activities have many purposes for adults, meeting needs for

inclusion, identity, and roles in life. From this it can be seen that there is a link

between engagement in meaningful activity and well-being which relates to the

needs of people who have reduced function and this is considered to be central in

promoting and maintaining health.

As a result of engagement with activities there is the potential to: enhance quality of

life, promote strengths, reduce rates of cognitive decline, enhance relationships and

communications, draw on interests and enhance self-esteem.

These services provide opportunities to older people or those with a primary

diagnosis of learning disability giving them openings to be involved in pursuits which

promote well-being through the use of purposeful outcome focused activities.

These activities which are client centred provide an opportunity for the client to

improve or maintain their functional status whilst also preventing a reduction in

performance across the physical, psychological, cognitive and perceptual domains.

This directory explores the current activities provided by the activity and well-being services. If service users have a particular interest that they would like to try that isn’t shown here then they need to speak to a member of staff who will then raise this as a development opportunity and it will be explored. Not all of the activities are offered at each service centre so please contact the staff listed on the back page for advice. Each page gives a brief description of the pursuit provided; the general aims of completing the activity and the potential broad benefits to the client. The interest check list provided over the page will help Identify the activities that might be of interest to the service user and with this and the activity descriptions the practitioner should be able to explore the potential benefits to the service user. Each service user will also gain personal benefits from each activity and these can be identified with them through the use of the following headings.
