AVENG MINING SECURES SAFETY CERTIFICATION VIK RAMLUGAAN RECEIVES A PPEO CERTIFICATION

Aveng Mining was recently awarded a safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) integrated management system (IMS) certification from globally recognised SGS. In recognition of this achievement, Aveng CEO, Kobus Verster, presented Trevor Nair, Aveng Mining’s SHERQ Director, with a Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Excellence Award.

SGS is a multinational company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The company provides inspection, verification, testing and certification services within the oil and gas and mining industries.

An integrated management system is a key enabler for Aveng Mining teams to identify all key SHEQ risks and ensure that the baseline risk assessments for all mining and engineering activities are complete and streamlined. The SHEQ IMS has been instrumental in the steady improvement of Aveng Mining’s safety performance over the last few years and plays a key role in driving business continuity objectives across all Aveng Mining operations. CONTRACTS AWARDED

McCONNELL DOWELL WINS NORTHERN GAS PIPELINE PROJECT

AVENG GRINAKER-LTA COASTAL SECURES ASPEN CONTRACT

SHEQ LESSONS

McConnell Dowell has been awarded the construction contract for the Northern Gas Pipeline (NGP) Project by Jemena. The NGP is a 622km buried gas pipeline between Tennant Creek and Mount Isa in Queensland. Upon completion, the NGP will, for the first time, connect Northern Territory gas fields with the east-coast gas market.

McConnell Dowell’s scope of work involves the engineering, construction and commissioning of a 481km section of the pipeline, starting in the Northern Territory. The award comes after an extensive early contractor involvement process between Jemena and McConnell Dowell, during which time Jemena secured the necessary approvals and land access to allow the project to move forward. McConnell Dowell will begin with site activities over the coming weeks with the first gas expected to run through the pipeline in late 2018.

McConnell Dowell’s CEO, Scott Cummins, said the company has industry-leading experience in the delivery of cross country pipeline projects and that it will build on the successful relationship between McConnell Dowell and Jemena. He further stated that this contract award is a testament of the customer’s confidence in McConnell Dowell’s experience and ability to construct this critical infrastructure link.

At a signing ceremony held in Melbourne earlier last week, Jemena’s Managing Director, Paul Adams, said the company is confident McConnell Dowell is well placed to construct and deliver the NGP. McConnell Dowell has committed to maximising local and indigenous participation during construction.

Aspen Pharmacare has awarded Aveng Grinaker-LTA Coastal a contract for the construction of new offices and ablution facilities at their premises in Port Elizabeth.

This project began on 29 May 2017 and is expected to be completed by mid-September 2017.

Congratulations to all who were involved in securing this contract and we wish the operational team a successful project.

Safety is a core value at Aveng and to demonstrate our commitment to continuous improvement in safety, we are introducing a new weekly column in Aveng News. SHEQ Lessons will do just that: share lessons learnt from safety incidents across the company. We hope that you will find value in this information and that you will be able to apply these valuable lessons in your area of work as we continue our journey to achieve ‘Home Without Harm, Everyone, Everyday’.

Compressed air pipe line failure

Key learnings from an air pipe failure incident include: • regular inspections of all pipes to determine if there are any areas of

potential failure and to then replace the suspect pipes• filters to be serviced regularly to prevent ingress of particles into

piping• always ensuring that the correct pressure rating is used • regularly review planned maintenance procedures to include

upgrading / replacing of aged pressure lines during plant shutdown periods

• ensure that the right connections are used when connecting hoses• follow procedures when opening and closing valves on air hoses.

UP-CLOSE AND PERSONAL

MEET KEAMOGETSE OLIFANT

Keamogetse Olifant is Aveng Grinaker-LTA’s Junior Safety Officer. She is responsible for assisting the Safety Manager with the day-to-day management of site safety procedures.

Before her current position, Keamogetse was getting her hands dirty as an earthmoving mechanic artisan, responsible for maintaining and repairing earthmoving equipment. She joined the company as an earthmoving mechanic apprentice in 2010. She is extremely proud of being the first woman at Aveng Grinaker-LTA to qualify as an earthmoving mechanic and of her ability to assemble and disassemble one of the largest machines at Aveng Grinaker-LTA while identifying faults and corrective measures on the manual of the machine.

Keamogetse describes Aveng as a company that is committed to team work while being focused on reducing corruption and lack of accountability as well as improving safety, honesty, integrity and trust.

Floris Coetzee, who was her foreman from 2010 until 2016, has had the biggest influence in her career. He made sure that as a woman in a male-dominated industry she never gave up, even in challenging circumstances, and pushed her to work harder when she wanted to throw in the towel. Her advice to young employees joining Aveng is to never lose focus of your goals and to avoid distractions.

“Qualities needed to succeed in business are to be self-driven, self-motivated, a hard worker, goal-orientated and focused,” adds Keamogetse.

She approaches challenges with the mindset that nothing is impossible when you put your mind into it. “Life is what you make out of it. Dream big and follow your passions.”

In her spare time, Keamogetse enjoys playing netball.

WELL DONE TO ALL OUR EMPLOYEES WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE COMRADE MARATHON ON 3 JUNE 2017

AVENG GRINAKER-LTA DONATES STATIONERY TO LEAP SCHOOL

Hercu Aucamp, Managing Director at Aveng Steel, hosted a visit to the Aveng Steel offices for Fori Ntheta, a long-serving and well-known employee at the Corporate Office, earlier this year.

Fori requested an opportunity to visit Aveng’s operating group offices and learn more about the business. His visit included a one-on-one discussion over coffee with Hercu, a video presentation of Aveng Steel’s capabilities and a tour of Aveng Steel’s facilities.

Commenting on the visit, Fori said: “I was delighted to visit Aveng Steel and thankful to Hercu for providing me with the opportunity.”

Fori has been employed as support staff for the company for over 30 years and is renowned across Aveng – and to many visitors - for his cappuccinos and his friendly demeanour.

Congratulations to Emmanuel Rhandhu, an Aveng DFC employee who came amongst the first 230 runners to finish the race out of 20,000 runners.

WORK HARD AND REST OFTEN KNOW YOUR BLOOD TYPE AND SAVE A LIFE

Achieving work-life balance is not an easy task, especially when technology has made us accessible from anywhere and throughout the day and night. Time free from workplace obligations is becoming increasingly difficult. We spoke to a few employees across the company to find out how they cope with the demands of work and still find time for their families.

I believe that smiling and remaining upbeat creates positivity and happiness. Always try to see the bright side of life’s situations. Remember that the glass is half full and not half empty. Spend time with people that make you feel good. There is a fine line in achieving balance between work and family obligations. Find something to relieve your stress. My stress reliever is to exercise daily and, at night, reading a book before bedtime helps me to relax. Audrey Geyser, Admin Coordinator at Aveng Infraset

I find social and work life balance by knowing my priorities, getting enough sleep, good nutrition, dedicating most of my time on weekends to my family and friends, because I believe lack of balance can affect work performance.

Bernice Mashale, SHEQ Administrator at Aveng Water

How is your blood type determined?

There are a variety of properties within your blood cells that vary from person to person and make up your blood type. A person has one of four blood types, either A, B, AB or O. The classification of your blood type is dependent on the compound attached to your blood cells. For example, type A has A antigens and B has B antigens while bold type AB has both A and B antigens and blood type O has an absence of antigens.

Within your circulatory system, you also have opposite antibodies to the antigens. In blood group B, you’ll have A antibodies, group A has B antibodies while group AB has an absence of antibodies and group O has both A and B antibodies.

Knowing your blood type is critical, especially when you donate blood or if you need a blood transfusion in an emergency. If you had to receive A type blood and you’re in the B group, your antibodies will react with A antigens causing blood clots and leaving you at risk of a stroke or a heart attack, as well as several other debilitating and maybe fatal health conditions.

People who are categorised with O type blood are referred to as universal donors as this blood type does not carry antigens associated with other blood groups. This means that there will be no reaction between antibodies in the recipient’s blood. Those who are type O blood group are encouraged to donate blood regularly as they are a match to any blood type. Similarly, AB blood type are known as universal recipients because their circulatory system doesn’t match a donor and recipient.

Play your part in saving lives

If you don’t know your blood type, visit your local blood donation centre. June is dedicated to blood donors. Without you, lives will be lost. Donate a pint of blood in support of Blood Donor Month and join millions of people throughout the world who give their blood on a voluntary, unpaid basis to save the lives of those in need.

The importance of blood

Blood is an important resource, both for planned treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer, or support complex medical and surgical procedures. Blood is also vital for treating the wounded during emergencies and has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care.

Give blood, give now, give often

World Blood Donor Day on 14 June aims to raise awareness on the need for safe blood, to thank and honour those blood donors who make transfusion possible and to encourage regular blood donation. This year’s campaign focuses on blood donation in emergencies under the theme “Give blood. Give now. Give often.” and the slogan “What can you do?”. The campaign urges us all to give our blood for emergency situations and stresses the importance of giving blood regularly, so that blood stock is sufficient before an emergency arises. Become a regular blood donor and ensure that the safety of blood transfusions is maintained and make it possible for the South African National Blood Service to collect sufficient safe blood to meet growing demand.

Aveng blood drive campaigns are held every quarter and employees are encouraged to participate and donate blood. Over the last few months, 374 Aveng employees have participated in blood donation drives. In recent years, hundreds of our employees have donated valuable pints of blood to save many lives.

SHEWQ

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to save a life.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH

CALLING ALL ACHIEVERS

June is men’s health month. It is a time to focus on our male colleagues to promote awareness around the health risks that men face, how to prevent them and encourage regular medicals.

Research has shown that the leading causes of death among men are heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate cancer and unintentional injury. Many of these are a result of unhealthy lifestyles and we all know that prevention is better than cure. They can be avoided by managing stress, exercising regularly, eating properly and cutting back on smoking and alcohol.

Early detection is also a much more effective way of managing your health and we urge you to go for regular health checks. Spending an hour out of every year meeting with your doctor is a worthwhile investment of time when you consider that it may help avoid years of treatment and possible disability from a condition that could have been picked up at an early stage and treated. Most prostate cancers grow slowly, and don’t cause any health problems in men who have them. They can go undetected until they are in their final stages. However, if you detect the disease early on, it can be treated.

‘Home Without Harm’ is a principle that we encourage our employees to adopt in the workplace and at home, and it applies not only to safety but to your wellbeing too.

Take control, know your numbers! Make an appointment to visit your doctor today. It is important for you and for your family.

We are working on another issue of Aveng World. It will include a section dedicated to highlighting the achievements – personal or professional - of our employees. Did you snag a trophy, land a sponsorship, present a paper, or achieve something noteworthy in the academic, vocational or sporting realms?

If you have had a baby, got married, engaged or celebrated a milestone in your life recently, then we’d love to hear from you. Please submit a high resolution photograph (at least 1mb in size) with a short story including your name, designation and details of your achievement to Phakisho Mojapelo at [email protected] by 15 June 2017.
