 ACCOMPLISHMENT

November 21, 2011, when we first step at Soiltech. We have our safety

orientation program conducted by the On-The-Job Training coordinator of

this company, Engr. Domingo Flora.

Our training started at 4:00 PM on the same day. We are assigned at

plant 2 of the manufacturing company where in a 600 hp fire tube boiler is

used. We first met sir Darwin Hufana, the operator on duty. He taught us on

how to start and stop the boiler. He discussed that before starting a boiler, the

fuel must first be pre – heated. And when the boiler pumped water press the

blower button, then the ignition and lastly the main flame buttonconsecutively until it reaches the required pressure to produce steam to the

granulator.

The next day, I started my duty at 4:00 PM. During the last shift which is

4:00 PM to 12 midnight, we only have the operation of the boiler. According to

my observation, during 1:00 to 3:00 AM the pressure of the boiler reaches to

860 psi and it is continuously working. From 3:00 to 5:00 AM the pressure is

350 – 600 psi. During 5:30 to 6:00 AM it reaches 850 – 900 psi. When it

reaches 900 psi at 6:25 AM the boiler automatically shut downed because it

reaches the highest pressure. Two things might be the reason when the boiler

automatically stops, it is either the pressure reaches to 900 psi or the boiler

has insufficient supply of water or they called it “low water”. The operator

advised us that we should not wait until it automatically shut down. Before

the pressure reaches 900 psi, we should shut it down. At 7:23 AM, the boiler

blows down for the preparation of the next shift.

On the next few days, we only operated the boiler, and checked thefurnace bunker consumption alternately. Every hour, we also read the meter

fuel of the furnace.

November 25, 2012 is the day when I encountered a problem on a boiler

of the plant. The operator said that the pipes of the bunker fuel did not reach

its heating value so there is no ignition happened. The operation of the boiler

stopped. I, together with the operator checked the boiler clearly and cleaned

the waste materials that came out from the boiler. After how many hours, the

boiler returned to its normal state and the operation continues.

On my next duty, we moved to another boiler which is boiler no. 4 of the

same plant because boiler no. 3 has too much carbon waste. Boiler no. 4 is also

a fire tube boiler but it is smaller than that of no. 3. The procedure of starting

and shutting down is also both the same.

During the first two and a half hours of the same day, I operated the

boiler and read the furnace fuel consumption. After that, I went to the

processing unit to observe the procedure in making triple 14 fertilizers. The

process started at the mixer or miller. The raw materials first go to the mixer, and by a conveyor and an elevator it will go to the granulator so that it will

come out as granules. The next station is to the dryer and after drying the

granules will go to the 3 screens of the processing plant by the use of conveyor

and again elevator. The first screen filtered the oversize granules which will

return to the mixer and repeat the process. The other screens filtered the

produced product going to the conveyor and to the hopper and lastly packed

ready for trucking. As I observed, the most crucial state of the process is in the

granulator. If the granules are too fine, there is no production happens and if the granules are too large there is less production. So, it is not easy to produce

a normal granule size.

Until the last day of our training, we only operated the boiler, checked

the furnace consumption and read the meter fuel consecutively.
