artacademy.org.uk
London is a wonderful city in which to be a student and there are a range of options when it comes to accommodation - from purpose-built student housing to private renting.
We know that finding accommodation in London can be daunting, particularly if you're new to the city. This document is designed to give you some basic information to help you make the best informed decision.
If you have any further questions, please get in touch with us on +44 (0) 20 7407 6969.
MERMAID COURT 165A Borough High Street, London SE1 1HR
Mermaid Court is our main site. It is located on Borough High Street, about five minutes from Borough station (Northern line) or London Bridge station (Northern/Jubilee line tubes or overground trains).
NEWINGTON 155 Walworth Road, London SE17 1RS
Our Newington site is five minutes' walk from Elephant & Castle station, which has both Northern and Bakerloo line tubes, and overground train services. Newington is a 20-minute walk or 10-minute bus from Mermaid Court.
Both of our sites are very well located for travel, so many students can choose to live outside zone 1 and take advantage of cheaper rent. A 45-minute commute from your accommodation to your place of study is considered normal.
On the next page, you'll find a zone map of London. You can plan your commute at www.tfl.gov.uk or by visiting www.citymapper.com/london/.

TRAVEL COSTS
LIVING IN LONDONLondon is a fantastic city to live in and a great place to study art. We’re based in the heart of London’s energetic creative scene, close to some of the city's best galleries, museums, restaurants, landmarks, parks and other entertainment. There's a variety of options when it comes to accommodation, some of which are set out below and overleaf.
It's worth noting that your rent might be affected outside of term time - you may be charged less if you aren't going to stay all summer, or asked to vacate the premises. Please check your terms of accommodation carefully to find out more about this.
PURPOSE-BUILT STUDENT ACCOMMODATIONPurpose-built housing usually offers a high standard of accommodation and it can be a great way to meet other students from different colleges and universities. Some student accommodation providers that you might want to look into are:
• www.unitestudents.co.uk• www.nidostudent.co.uk• www.thestudenthousingcompany.com• www.fusionstudents.co.uk• www.purestudentliving.com• www.apartostudent.com
ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS
RENTINGYou can choose to rent privately from some of London's many landlords and agencies. Many students choose to share accommodation to reduce costs. The Greater London Authority website offers information about renting costs across London, as well as handy tips and advice for renters:www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/housing-and-land
The following websites are useful if you're looking for private rented properties or spare rooms:
• Spareroom - www.spareroom.co.uk• Rightmove - www.rightmove.co.uk• Zoopla - www.zoopla.co.uk
LENGTH OF CONTRACTUsually, a landlord will expect you to stay for 6 - 12 months in a property. Don't forget that you will need to give your landlord appropriate notice when you're moving out - this is usually one month, but you should check your rental agreement to find out what notice you are required to give.
DEPOSITYou can expect to pay one month's rent in advance, plus a deposit (usually equivalent to six weeks' rent). The deposit covers any damage to property during your stay there, or any unpaid rent after you leave.
You can ask for an inventory report when you move in, which should note any existing damage or wear and tear. You might also want to take photos of any damage you see in the property when you move in.
Please note, some agencies will request that international students with no UK guarantor pay six months' rent in advance.
COUNCIL TAXThis is a charge made by local authorities on residential properties to fund local public services. If you live in an all full-time student household, you won't need to pay council tax. If you live in shared accommodation with some students and some working adults, you may need to pay some council tax. We can provide a letter for you stating that you are a student.
SHORT-TERM ACCOMMODATIONYou might want to organise accommodation for when you first arrive in London, to give you time to get used to the city and decide on longer-term accommodation. You can use the following sites to find short-term accommodation in London:
• www.airbnb.co.uk• www.booking.com• www.hostelworld.com
STAYING WITH A HOST FAMILYAnother option is finding a host family in London to stay with. Below is a list of websites that advertise available host families:
• www.homestay.com• www.londonhomestays.com• www.studentstay.co.uk/homestays/
OTHER INFORMATIONHEALTHCAREThe NHS provides a wide range of healthcare services, including doctor's appointments, hospital treatment and dental care. You should register with a doctor as soon as you can after arriving in London.
If you are an international student, you'll need your passport and a letter from us as proof that you are a student - please get in touch so we can arrange this for you.
DISCOUNTS As a student, you may be entitled to some discounts. Useful websites to help you access discounts, save money and budget include:
• www.nus.org.uk/en/nus-extra/about-the-card/• www.savethestudent.org• www.studentmoneysaver.co.uk
