WINTER 2005 From the Head of School: Dr. David Watson Welcome to the Winter 2005 edition of Accent Magazine. On behalf of all here at Awty, let me take this opportunity of wishing all our readers a belated Happy New Year. Good schools are places where good teaching and learning take place on a daily basis in a friendly atmosphere of respect, challenge and achievement. At all levels and in all aspects of our work in school, I see signs that Awty is genuinely making a difference in the lives of our children and our families. For parents, from whichever corner of the world they may hail, there is no substitute for total confidence in the profession- alism and skill of your child's teachers. This is something we strive for at this school and judging from the growing lists of families who are making Awty their school of choice, it seems we are making progress towards achieving this goal we have set for ourselves. Students Lead Tsunami Relief Effort! In response to the tsunami devastation, the students at The Awty International School joined together and designated January 10-14 as Tsunami Relief Week. The students went above and beyond all expectations, raising nearly $8,000 for the relief effort. Alejandro Cubria, a senior and Student Council President at Awty, along with mem- bers of the student council, led the effort and asked each student at Awty to participate by making a small cash donation. They placed donation boxes on campus and toured class- rooms throughout the week to secure their goal of 100% participation from the student body. As the second largest international school in the United States, The Awty International School student council felt strongly about supporting the relief effort. Many of the students at Awty have either vis- ited or studied in the affected countries, or have relatives or friends who are living in the region. The student council members were amazed at the reaction of the student body. "Knowing that community service and international understanding is at the heart of Awty's mission, and seeing such a tragedy, it was only fitting for us to help the victims," stated Alejandro Cubria. "The reaction to this effort was far better than expected. It was overwhelming." As pledged, Mr. Anthony P. Banham, School Board of Trustees Chairman, matched every dollar raised by the students, up to $5,000. This brought the total amount raised for the relief effort to nearly $13,000. "I am so proud of the students and their efforts to help with the devastation in South Asia," said Anthony Banham. "This typifies the international cultural consciousness that is an essential part of the Awty community." Finally, Awty's Interact Club donated $500 to the relief effort. A check for $17,133.96 was presented to UNICEF to help aid in the relief efforts in South Asia on Monday, January 24. (Note: A small portion of funds raised was also collected by the students through the "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" program last fall.)

The recent tragic events in South Asia remindus all of our fragility and essential interdepend-ence. Students at Awty were quick to respond tothe crisis and showed a level of practical engage-ment which was both heart-warming and helpful inits sincerity and depth. With crisis, comes opportu-nity; after the rain, a few rays of sunshine and achild's smile.

International schools celebrate the diversity ofthe human condition and ensure that every act, every symbol, every exchange involving teachers, administrators, students and parents reinforces thebelief that, in the end, human diversity is anenrichment and a source of strength. Couple thistogether with Mrs. Awty's vision of a compassion-ate school where every child might achieve his orher full potential in an environment of trust andencouragement, and you have captured somethingof the reason why our school remains so attractiveto so many families.

In 2006, The Awty International School cele-brates its 50th birthday! Mrs. Awty opened the

“A Letter from the Proviseur”

Dear Parents, Students, and Readers, For six months now I have had the

honor and the privilege of directing theBilingual French Section at AwtyInternational School.

Centrally located off the West Loop inHouston, Awty International School offers acomplete academic curriculum based onbilingualism, from Preschool through the12th grade.

A result of the fusion of a Texanschool, offering the InternationalBaccalaureate Program of Geneva, and anofficial French school, under the Ministryof Education and affiliated with the MissionLaïque Française, offering the FrenchBaccalaureate, Awty is currently composedof 1145 students; 448 of whom are in theFrench Bilingual Section.

Faithful to the values of the MissionLaïque Française, "2 cultures, 3 languages",the Bilingual French Section of AwtyInternational School has appointed itself thefollowing several missions:

- Guarantee families, notably Frenchexpatriate families, a school that adheres tothe official directives of the FrenchNational Ministry of Education. Thus itsstudents are thereafter able to pursue theirstudies in France or in any French schoolworldwide.

- Take full advantage of the uniquequalities of the school by providing studentswith the opportunity to become bilingual, offering up to 7 hours of English per week. For example, in Preschool, teaching isadministered equally: one day in French, one day in English. In the Upper School, students may elect to follow theInternational Option of the Baccalaureate(courses in History, Geography andLiterature are taught in English).

- Maintain the excellent standards ofthe school with regard to test scores(National Brevet Diploma for MiddleSchool, Baccalaureate results).

- Promote French Language andCulture among the local community andwithin the student body at AwtyInternational School.

The Mission of Awty far and awayexceeds that of a simple language school.Awty welcomes students from every cornerof the Earth (over fifty different nationali-

ties). The school is a social entity whereinvalues such as civic duty, respect, toleranceand integration are practiced on a dailybasis and form the very basis of its mission.Numerous activities (classes in common, recreational activities and sports, field trips, school events) give students the opportunityto become a part of a group in whichFrench, French-speaking, American andother foreign nationals are mixed.

Awty International School is a schoolof excellence. Its Baccalaureate resultsspeak for themselves (100% success, 80%with honors), as does the list of its students'Post-Baccalaureate institutions of learning(elite and prestigious universities, 'grandesécoles'). Class sizes are small, thus studentsbenefit from individualized and attentiveinstruction.

What's been going on since the start ofthis school year?

Back-to-School in August just as inpreceding years: new teachers joining theteam (Ms. Gidon, Ms. Meier and Ms.Srour), students from many different hori-zons joining the student body, and new sci-ence laboratories being made available forthe benefit of all.

In September, there were the traditionalFall Trips…which were once again a greatexperience for the students… The 8th gradedid a dry-run on the soccer field for thegreat camping adventure that is their Big

Bend trip; the 6th grade visited theAlamo; the 7th grade went to Austin todiscover the political capital of Texas…and the 12th grade went down Buffalo

Bayou. Here I must pause, for this was a moment ofcourage for many of our Seniors, along with their teachers, the Head of School and their Proviseur. As amazing as thismay seem, Buffalo Bayou (between Woodway and AllenParkway Landing) rather calls to mind a river in Borneo orVietnam… a strange world of greenery, scents, and soundsthat snakes around the heels of Uptown's great buildings. To follow its path, along this water-trail, was quite an inter-esting experience - at times a difficult one for certainfemale students who had to take it upon themselves to nav-igate this byway so different from the Galleria or MemorialCity Mall.

October, November, and December saw a successionof festivities: the pumpkins of Halloween chased by theThanksgiving turkeys, who themselves were banished byFrosty the Snowman and Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer, all under the watchful eyes of the Three Wise Men, await-ing the King's cake that would arrive under January's arm.

Each of these moments is commemorated at ourschool, through performances or occasions to share: the

Fall Fun Festival, the Thanksgiving Meal, the HolidayTree-lighting Ceremony. These are moments that bring anentire school community together…moments that makeAwty the unique, special place it is.

January is the month of the Practice Baccalaureate forstudents in 12th grade and the Practice Brevet for those in9th. It's the perfect time to take stock of all that we haveaccomplished since the beginning of the year.

A Golden Opportunity: 2004-22005 Annual Giving CampaignDear Awty Parent,

I am writing to invite you to donateto the school and help us attract othermajor donations from foundations. You’ll be showing your children you areproud of them, and of their school.

As Awty receives no governmentfunding, we rely heavily on alternate

sources including corporate, foundation and individualdonations (that’s you!). It gives us a great advantage insecuring corporate and foundation support if we can showthat our families are supporting the school in a given year.Any and all gifts, no matter the amount, count toward thisgoal. You may choose to give at a level which entitles you

to a charm, or at a different level. You will still be helpingus make a grand statement.

As you know, Awty is dedicated to promoting in its stu-dents a system of values based on community service andinternational understanding. Your philanthropic supportallows the School to offer students a unique, innovative andchallenging education and sound preparation for higher edu-cation in the United States or abroad. No matter their coun-try or origin, the Awty family strives to provide its studentsa piece of home right here in Houston.

Camp Spike 'n' Wave

The first thing that hits youwhen you arrive at Camp ForAll, the location of CampSpike 'n' Wave, is the incredi-ble sense of belonging. Thecamp seems to rise up out ofnowhere, like an oasis in themiddle of a desert. It is aspecial place; a place whereeveryone is accepted, andhaving a disability is anadvantage. I say thisbecause all the campersare bound together bytheir disability, whatever

it may be. Race, creed, color, financial standing - none of these things

matter, all that matters is that the campers are together andthat, for one week, they will be able to forget their troublesand just have fun. I spent one incredible week with thesekids, and I walked away with enough memories to last tenlifetimes.

I was a counselor for Camp Spike 'n' Wave, a camp forchildren with epilepsy. Before you ask, I do not haveepilepsy. As a counselor, having epilepsy was not requiredof me (although some counselors are former campers). Myjob was to have fun with the kids, and to make sure thatthey had the most incredible experience of their lives in thesafest possible way. I was neither paid for my services, norforced to give them. Did I have an ulterior motive? Sure, Ihad service hours to fill. But this is beside the point. Thereare many ways to serve your community. I chose CampSpike 'n' Wave because it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime expe-rience.

Many prospective counselors are put off by the idea ofspending a week of their summer looking after kids. I

know: it's babysitting without the perks of cable TV andgood wages. However, these are not your typical kids. Ofcourse the camp is no cakewalk. Epilepsy is not necessarilydifficult to handle, but many campers have other problems, ranging from ADD to mental retardation. It is a challengeto look after these campers for a week, but it is also a priv-iledge. Knowing that you are providing these campers withopportunities that they would rarely otherwise have is anunbelievably great feeling.

Activities include archery, horseback riding, swimming, biking, dancing, nature, and barnyard studies, high and lowropes, canoeing and fishing. Camp Spike 'n' Wave offersthe full spectrum of activities to cater to any taste. Just tobe clear, the counselors are able to partake in these activitiesas well, and you'll often end up having as much fun as yourkids. However, the real fun, believe it or not, comes fromthe immense responsibility counselors carry. These kidslook up to their counselors. They envy them, they emulatethem, and they strive to impress them. When a counseloruses this to his or her advantage, they can make a camperaccomplish anything. I had campers who were terrified ofanything from bike riding, to barnyard animals, to canoeing.Lead by example. The camper thinks, "Hey, if they can doit, then I can do it too!" Actually, the inverse is truer.Watching a camper conquer his fear of heights to experi-ence the rush of the zip-line, the counselor thinks, "Hey ifhe can do that, imagine what I can do."

Nothing compares to the experience of Camp Spike 'n'Wave. I gave up a week of my summer so that I couldspend it in the company of some of the finest people Iknow. Like I said at the start, I have many memories. Iremember Tom, Colin, Erik, Cody, and Jay. They are fiveyoung men who proved that, when faced with adversity, humans can and will achieve anything.

On behalf of the Association ofParents and Personnel of The AwtyInternational School, I would like tosend you my warmest wishes for theNew Year. I hope that 2005 willbring you all the best, peace, love, and prosperity. As we begin this

new year, we reflect on the past and plan for thefuture.

The APPA History is so closely linked with AwtySchool History that one cannot be revisited without dis-cussing the other.

The Parents Association of Awty began with the found-ing of the school in 1956 by Mrs. Kathleen Awty. At theopening there were fewer than 30 students in the Pre-school,with a monthly tuition of eighteen dollars and seventy-fivecents. During this time the parents, both European andTexan, were working hard for the common good of theschool. From the beginning there was a blending of influ-ences which uniquely shaped the school.

By 1969, the parents' organization had a long traditionof service and fundraising for the school. In 1970, theMiddle School was added, followed by the Upper School in1973. During all of these years the parents' participationenriched the life of the school with their supportive work.By the end of the seventies, Mrs. Awty merged her schoolwith the French School of Houston. With this blending, theparents group added a vital, extra dimension to the school.

By 1980, the parents' organization was renamed theAwty Parents and Personnel Association (APPA). With aneye toward the legacy of parental involvement at Awty, weforge the onging history as families continue to enrich theschool with their involvement, and the APPA tradition ofschool support evolves.

Future plans are to work with the school to improve ourwebsite, as we strive to reach all of the school community. We want to hear from you. We will continue to raise funds

to assist the school with its wish list.Last year in 2003 we partially funded the new patio, so

loved by the students for study, lunch, or meeting friends.Additionally we helped to fund the new fencing of the soc-cer field. Over the past years, the APPA has donated thou-sands of books to the school's three libraries, along withtens of thousands of volunteer hours offered by our tirelessmembers. Some events hosted by the APPA include theWelcoming Coffees, Pot Luck Supper, Holiday Market,International Festival, Bookfair, Teacher In-ServiceLuncheon, and Teacher Appreciation Breakfast. The APPAorganizes the room parents and thanks them for year-roundclass support.

We appreciate all of you for helping us to continue thetradition of supporting the school through our volunteeractivities, whether in the classroom or fund raising capacity.

The APPA is not a melting pot, but rather a diverse stewwhere we share friendship, language and culture, fromwhich all of us are enriched. The role of the APPA contin-ues to expand and diversify, just as our membership. Wethank you for your continued support.

up of individuals and businesses that sup-port the school's Athletic Programs. Thefunds raised are used to supplementexisting sports programs and benefitthe girls and boys from Lower Schoolthrough Upper School.

The Booster Club has purchased all kinds of ath-letic equipment: coaching reference materials, a soccerscoreboard, software scheduling programs, uniforms, warm-ups and t-shirts, and Lower School playground equipment.

A large group of dedicated volunteers ensures theBooster Bistro is open daily at break offering snacks of allkinds. The Bistro and Ramshack are also open for homegames as a service to our athletes and the visiting teams.

The Awty "Almost" Olympics is our single largestfundraising event of the school year. This year’s Olympicswas held on February 5th. This is an evening of friendlycompetition of trivia, skill and creativity between teams ofAwty parents.

We recently accomplished our most ambitious goal todate with the installation of floodlights on the soccer field, which allows games to be played after dark.

Our next goal focuses on the updating of the workoutroom, which is in need of new equipment for athletic train-ing and conditioning suitable for boys and girls.

What is the “Booster Club”?The Awty Rams Booster Club is made up of businessesand individuals who support the school's AthleticPrograms. All of the funds raised by this group are usedto supplement existing sports programs at Awty forthe boys and girls of all ages.

What has the Booster Club accomplished? In the past several years, the Awty Rams Booster Clubhas generously donated time and monies raised from the"Almost" Olympics and Booster Bistro to help theschool purchase various athletic equipment, t-shirts,sports bags, warm-up suits, a sound system, softwarescheduling programs, coaching reference materials, ascoreboard and sprinkler system - all for the benefit ofthe Lower, Middle and Upper School students.

Why should you become a member? The tuition at Awty does not provide all of the fundsnecessary to cover the costs of its expanding sports pro-grams. Your membership in the Booster Club helps to:

Supplement the needs of the Athletic DepartmentProvide the school's individuals and teams a better

competitive edgeBenefit every boy and girl who participates in any

Havana Night: One to Remember!

No visas were needed to join in the fun at the Havana Latin Grill and Bar on October 23 when the Awty Rams Booster Club hosted an evening to celebrate

school spirit and soccer field lights. There was even greater spirit on the dance floor as everyone danced the night away to the Latin rhythms! A great turnout of

coaches, teachers, school administration and parents enabled us to raise $590 towards projects for the athletic department. Thank you for joining us, and a

very special thanks to Jose Luis Cubria for organizing the event.

AWTY DADS’ CLUBAWTY DADS’ CLUBNow in its second

year, the Awty Dads'Club is gaining momen-tum, gathering newmembers, and hostingnew activities. Underthe auspices of Awty

Dads’ Joe Mongrain andDavid Pruner, the Club was formed to provide a communityfor Dads to network with each other, as well as to supportthe development and cultivation of the school and its stu-dents.

The recent Awty Dads' Golf Tournament, held inNovember under beautiful skies, was a great success, bring-ing together members of the Awty community to enjoy aday of golf and resulted in raising more than $16,000 for theSchool. The Tournament was generously supported by gen-erous Awty families, members of the community and lead-ing businesses, which sponsored raffle prizes, the event, andthe various holes. Mark your calendars as the 2005 GolfTournament has already been scheduled for November

2005. This upcoming year will highlight the Internationalaspect of Awty, with an eye towards focusing on multina-tional companies, the local diplomatic corps, and the cultur-al diversity of the Awty population.

The Awty Dads' Club has also organized a series ofpick-up soccer matches on Saturday mornings, providing avenue for Dads (and others) to work out their hearts andhamstrings and get to know each other.

The First Annual Awty Dads' Scotch Tasting has beenscheduled for Friday, April 29, 2005, providing a one-weekrecovery after the Gala. lleetttteerr ffrroomm tthheecchhaaiirrmmaannDear Parents and Friends of The Awty International School,

am very pleased to report that the school has had another successful year. In allareas of school operation, time and talent, resources and funds have been translatedinto action and accomplishment in a variety of different ways by all members of theAwty community, from parents, students and teachers, through the members of theadministration, volunteers and the Board of Trustees.

Enrolment continued to grow steadily over the past year. Our graduating classof 72 students in June 2004 achieved outstanding results. The IB pass rate at Awtywas 96% compared to a North American average of 78% and 81% worldwide. Awty'sFrench Baccalaureat pass rate was 100%, with 81% Assez Bien or better. Like you,I am proud to pay tribute to the teachers whose dedication and diligence across allgrade levels of the school have made possible these and other accomplishmentsthroughout the past year.

Many of the physical changes which have taken place on the campus offer tan-gible evidence of the investments which the Board is making in the future of theschool. The new Lower School building opened officially in October 2003; in sum-

mer 2004, two new science laboratories were added in the Middle and Upper School, a newtheater area was completed as was the new Courtyard area. The school also was able topurchase eight acres of land a few hundred yards north of thepresent campus, which we intend to use, in the short term, for much needed parking but which, longer term and, subjectto funding, will provide us with a full sports field and anoth-er access point to North Post Oak Lane.

Moreover, subsequent to the end of the school year2003-2004, we were able to substantially strengthen ourDevelopment (now renamed Advancement Department)with a Director of Advancement and additional staff. Thiswill be key to the success of our future fundraising activi-ties.

This Annual Report 2003-2004 is a testament to thegenerosity of the many donors who have made gifts toour Annual Fund as well as various unrestricted gifts tothe school and have participated in the Gala. Thesegifts have allowed us to limit the increases in tuitionover the past few years and keep the costs of attendingThe Awty International School among the most reasonable in the city ofHouston.

By giving to The Awty International School, you are making sound investments in thefuture of your child and of this school. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish to thankall the school's constituents for their support over the past year and look forward to yourcontinued commitment over the coming years of growth and success here at Awty.

Yours sincerely,

Anthony BanhamChairman of the Board of Trustees

mmeessssaaggee ffrroomm tthheehheeaadd ooff sscchhoooollhrough the years here at The Awty International School, students, parents, alumni, teachers and friends have worked together to make a difference in the education ofAwty students. With their support, Awty has become a diverse, academically challeng-

ing school which prepares students for success in an increasingly complex and rapidlychanging world.

2003-2004 saw the school make considerable strides in terms of our physicalsurroundings. The new Lower School building opened in October 2003 as did thenew Senior Lounge. Since then the school has built a new staff room and has con-verted three former classrooms into two new Science laboratories over summer2004 to create a six-laboratory Science wing in the Middle and Upper Schools.

The new Courtyard in the Middle and Upper School area, which opened insummer 2004, has provided students with a refreshment/seating area for breaktimes. Our new Theatre-in-the-Round at the back of the Performing Arts andAthletic Center had its successful inaugural production, Moliere's Tartuffe, inNovember 2004.

After many years of playing soccer in the half light of the Texan winter, new flood-lights on the soccer field, jointly funded by the Booster Club and the school, were turned onin January 2005.

Our enrollment continues to indicate a healthy and increasing interest locally andinternationally in this school. From 970 students in summer 2000, we have grown steadilyto our current level of 1150 students from 52 nationalities.

As we plan for the future, (Awty will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 2006), we are mind-ful of the past and the progress that has been made with the help of supporters of theschool up until now. As a non-profit school, The AwtyInternational School relies heavily upon the tuition and feeswe receive from parents to maintain the high quality of educa-tion we offer our students everyday. However tuition and feesonly cover about 80% of the actual costs of educating yourchild at Awty.

We need the support of parents, alumni and corporationsto continue to bridge "the excellence gap" between what wereceive in revenue and our total operational costs. Byincreasing contributions to the school's endowment, we canin time become less dependent upon tuition income. Thismust eventually be our goal over the long term and welook to our parents and friends for support and help inachieving this objective for our children at Awty.

In this Annual Report, I am therefore delighted tooffer my sincere thanks to all those parents and friendswho have contributed most generously to the school overthe past year, and who by doing so have helped to provide financial aid toqualifying students and helped to keep academic standards high and tuition rises to aminimum.

Thank you, from all of us at Awty, for your continued commitment to the ideals and tothe future of this remarkable school.

Dr. David WatsonHead of School

“Thank you, from allof us at Awty, foryour continued commitment to theideals and to thefuture of this remarkable school.”
