ACADEMIC SESSION: 2019 – 20
Class IX (CBSE)
HOLIDAY INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
STUDENT’S NAME: DATE:
Dear Children,
We are sure that you will enjoy your summer vacation with members of the family
and friends. Some of you must be planning to travel or to visit your relatives and
grandparents. It will be great if you spend some time with them and gift them
something that is handmade and designed by you. This will surely make them feel
special. If possible, join some activity classes or learn something new during your
holidays. Spend some time reading storybooks, newspapers, watching interesting and
informative programmes. Help your parents by cleaning up your room, arranging
things kept in the cupboard and donating things that you do not need to a NGO.
We are attaching a few interesting activities and assignments which you are expected to do during the break.
This will also help you avoid the noon time heat. Write neatly and present your work well. Please complete
the work and bring it to school on Thursday, June 6, 2019. Have lots of fun and take good care of yourself.
Six things to remember during summer vacation:
While your parents and we want you to have fun during summer break, we also want you to be thinkers
and doers. The following guidelines will help you to be both, while enjoying your freedom at the same
time.
1. Find other ways of entertaining yourself than phones and TV, learn a musical instrument like guitar or
keyboard, learn a hobby like origami or magic tricks, read novels, learn cooking, etc.
2. For every hour of electronics, you give one hour of play time
3. If you are bored, help out at home. This will also earn brownie points with your parents and help
you realize the importance of organization and cleanliness.
4. Reading is a must. Reading nurtures your soul. When you visit malls, make sure you drop in at a
bookstore and pick books that interest you. Otherwise, read on Kindle.
5. There is no sleeping all day and staying up all night: It is unhealthy and it will be hard for you to
readjust to regular school schedule at the end of the vacations.
6. Make sure you make time for your parents: Watch a movie, go out on dinners with your family and
spend more time with your family than with your friends.

HOLIDAY HOMEWORK WORKSHEET-2
Student’s Name: Date General Instructions-
Answer all questions and paste/staple the worksheet in the class work
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. It is roughly the size of the continent of Australia and
covers an area of nearly 2.8 million square miles. The Amazon rainforest gets its life from the majestic
Amazon River which runs through the heart of the region. Amazon is also the second largest river in the
world. The rainforest is simply the drainage basin for the river and its tributaries. The vast forest consists of
four layers, each featuring its own ecosystems and specially adapted plants and animals.
The forest floor is the lowest region. Since only two percent of the sunlight can filter through the top layers
to the understory very few plants grow there. The forest floor, however, is rich with rotting vegetation and
bodies of dead animals which quickly break down and get integrated into the soil as nutrients. Tree roots
stay close to these available nutrients and decomposers such as millipedes and earth worms use these
nutrients for food.
The understory is the layer above the forest floor. Much like the forest floor, only about 2 to 5 percent of the
sunlight reaches this shadowy realm. Many of the plants in the understory have large, broad leaves to collect
as much sunlight as possible. The understory is so thick that there is very little air movement. As a result,
plants rely on insects and animals to pollinate their flowers.
The layer above the understory is the canopy. This is where much of the action in the rainforest occurs.
Many plants growing in this layer have specially adapted leaves with drip tips. Drip tips allow water to flow
off the leaves and thus prevent mosses, fungi and lichens from infecting the leaves. Leaves in the canopy are
very dense and filter about 80 percent of the sunlight. The canopy is where the wealth of the rainforest’s
fruits and flowers grow.
Answer the following questions.
1. Which is the world’s second largest river?
2. How important is the Amazon River for Amazon rainforests?
3. Why do very few plants grow in the understory of the rainforests?
4. Why is there very little air movement in the understory?
5. What is the layer above the understory called?
6. Find the word from the passage which means ‘grand’.

Nonfiction Reading Test Metal Detectors
Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. Refer to the text to check
your answers when appropriate.
Have you ever been to the beach? Did you see a
man with a headset pointing a long pole at the
ground? If so you might have seen a person using a
metal detector. People use these devices to find
metal.
Metal detectors make magnetic waves. These waves go through the ground. The waves change when they
hit metal. Then the device beeps. This lets the person with the device know that metal is close.
The first metal detectors were meant to help miners. They were big. They cost a lot of money. They used a
lot of power. And worst of all, they didn't work well. People kept trying to make them better.
Metal detectors got smaller. Now they are light and cheap. They also work better. That is why people bring
them to the beach. They can look for rings in the water. They can look for phones in the sand. Metal
detectors help them find these things. They usually just find junk though.
Metal detectors also protect people. They help to keep guns out of some places. They are in airports.
They are in courthouses.
Some schools use them. They help guards look for weapons. Guards use special wands to find metal on a
person.
These devices save lives in other ways too. During wars, people plant bombs in the ground. When the war
ends, they don't clean up their messes. This is unsafe for the people who live in those places. Others use
metal detectors to find bombs. They remove them and help the people.
These devices also make clothes safer. It sounds funny, but it's true. Most clothes are made in big
factories. There are lots of needles in these places. Needles break from time to time. They get stuck in
the clothes. They would poke people trying them on.
They don't though. That's because our clothes are scanned for metal. Isn't that nice? Let's hear it for metal
detectors. They make the world a safer place.
Which was not one of the problems with the first metal detectors?
a. They were too big. b. They were too expensive.
c. They didn't work well. d. They were unsafe.
1. Which best describes the main idea of the second paragraph? a. It describes the sounds of a metal detector. b. It explains how metal detectors work.
c. It warns about the effects of metal detectors. d. It explains how magnetic waves move.
2. How do metal detectors make clothing safer? a. Metal detectors make sure factory machines are working the right way. b. Metal detectors make sure workers don't bring weapons into factories. c. Metal detectors make sure that broken needles don't get into clothing. d. Metal detectors help people recover lost clothing at the beach.
3. Why were metal detectors first used? a. To help miners b. To help security guards
c. To help doctors d. To help soldiers
-

4. According to the text, metal detectors have been used in all of the following except which? a. schools b. churches
c. courthouses d. airports
5. How do metal detectors help soldiers? a. They warn soldiers when bullets are coming. b. They help soldiers find hidden bombs.
c. They find weaknesses in their armor. d. They create a relaxing beeping noise.
6. Why do people bring metal detectors to the beach? a. Metal detectors help people keep the sand clean and safe. b. Metal detectors look cool. c. Metal detectors help people find valuable items. d. Metal detectors help guards keep weapons away from the beach.
7. Which happens first? a. The metal detector beeps alarmingly. b. The magnetic waves hit metal and change. c. The magnetic waves go through the ground. d. The metal detector creates magnetic waves.
8. How did metal detectors get better over time? a. They became cheaper. b. They became lighter.
c. They began working better d. All of these
9. Which title would best describe the purpose of this text? a. A Day at the Beach: Using Your Metal Detector to Find Things b. Metal Detectors: a Complete the Story of Their Invention c. Magnetism and More: How a Metal Detector Works d. Metal Detectors: What They Do and How We Use Them
1. How do metal detectors make save lives? Explain your answer using the text.
