On fixed orthodontic patients

ABSTRACT

The use of fixed orthodontics appliances such as band, bracket, ligature

braces, and elastic rubbes inside the patients mouth will trigger the changes on oral

cavity environment which will cause increasing of the microbial flora concentration,

and the accumulation of the food debris to form especially around the gingival sulcus.

There are two ways in preventing plaque accumulation; mechanically and chemically.

Plaque control using chemical means can be done by mouth rinse. These research

compared the effectiviness of 0.2% Chlorhexidine and 1% Povidon Iodine mouth

rinse to the plaque indeks on fixed orthodontic patients. The pre-test and post-test

with control group clinical assessment applied using a sample size 20 person fixed

orthodontic patients. 0.2% Chlorhexidine and 1% Povidon Iodine mouth rinse was

given to all patients. Plaque index was measured before using mouth rinse and a week

after using mouth rinse. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank test evaluating plaque index on

the enamel. Significance was pre-determined at P <0.005. the result showed that the

usage og 0.2% Chlorhexidine mouth rinse reduced plaque index significantly

compared to 1% Povidon Iodine mouth rinse. The mechanical plaque control by tooth

brushing is still the most influential mean to reduce plaque index in fixed orthodontic

patients.

terhadap penurunan indeks plak

pada pemakai alat ortodontik cekat

ABSTRAK

Pemakaian alat ortodontik cekat seperti band, bracket, ligature braces, dan

elastic rubbes di dalam mulut dapat mempercepat terjadinya perubahan dalam

lingkungan rongga mulut, yang akan menyebabkan terjadinya peningkatan jumlah

konsentrasi flora normal dan penumpukan sisa-sisa makanan terutama yang berada di

sekitar sulkus gingival. Terdapat dua cara untuk mencegah terbentuknya akumulasi

plak yaitu secara mekanik dan kimiawi. Kontrol plak secara kimiawi yaitu dengan

menggunakan obat kumur. Penelitian ini membandingkan efektifitas larutan

Klorheksidin 0.2% dan Povidon Iodida 1% terhadap indeks plak pada pemakai alat

ortodontik cekat. Pre-test and Post-test with control group digunakan dengan sampel

sebanyak 20 orang yang memakai alat ortodontik cekat. Larutan Klorheksidin 0.2%

dan Povidon Iodida 1% diberikan kepada semua sampel. Indeks plak diukur sebelum

memakai obat kumur dan seminggu setelah memakai obat kumur. Uji wilcoxon

signed ranks mengevaluasi indeks plak pada permukaan email. Signifikansi

ditentukan pada P.0.005. Hasilnya menunjukkan pemakaian larutan Kolrheksidin

0.2% signifikan dibandingkan larutan Povidon Iodida 1%. Kontrol plak secara

mekanik dengan menggunakan sikat gigi tetap merupakan cara yang paling

mempengaruhi indeks plak pada pemakai alat ortodontik cekat.
