Introduction

A base transceiver station or cell site (BTS) is a piece of equipment that facilitates

wireless communication between user equipment (UE) and a network. UEs are devices

like mobile phones (handsets), WLL phones, computers with wireless internet

connectivity, Wi-Fi and WiMAX gadgets etc. The network can be that of any of the

wireless communication technologies like GSM, CDMA, WLL, WAN, Wi-Fi, WiMAX etc.

BTS is also referred to as the radio base station (RBS), node B (in 3G Networks) or,

simply, the base station (BS). For discussion of the LTE standard the abbreviation eNB

for enhanced node B is widely used. So, to understand BTS we have to go through the

basics of GSM system because BTS is a part of a GSM system. The Base Transceiver

Station (BTS) is a network element maintaining the Air interface. It takes care of Air

interface signaling, Air interface ciphering and speech processing. In this context,

speech processing refers to all the functions the BTS performs in order to guarantee an

error-free connection between the MS and the BTS. The Transcoder (TC) is a BSS

element taking care of speech transcoding, i.e. it is capable of converting speech from

one digital coding format to another and vice versa. The BTS, BSC and TC together form

the Base Station Subsystem (BSS) which is a part of the GSM network taking care of the

following major functions.

Cellular communications systems have become integral to the modern world, enabling

businesses to interact with customers, clients and colleagues in unprecedented ways.

They have also helped to shape society and culture, with trends formed by SMS

messages and now social networking via mobile phones enabling information, comment

and news to be shared more easily than ever before. There are number of differen t

systems that deserve attention and here we will examine the major standards. Cellular

phone is one of the fastest growing and most demanding telecommunications

applications. For this both GSM and CDMA technologies are widely used in all over the

world. Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) is perhaps the best-known

cellular communications standard in the world. This is the case because it has become

the most popular format used by network providers on a global scale. 3G refers to the

third generation of cellular communications technology to emerge and it is part of a

family of wireless standards. Nowadays 3G mobile has also been deployed in most

countries. In this situation, in our country yet GSM technology is prominent. During this

internship extensive work have been done on GP SWAP under the sub-contractor

company, Ring Tech (BD) Ltd, installation of all equipment’s of GSM technology at

GRAMEEN PHONE Limited (GP) Project. In this internship at first site survey and radio

planning have been made. Then BTS installations have been made by Huawei

equipment. After all of these installments the integrity of the whole system has been

tested. By all these processes the efficiency of the GSM network has been extended.
