Overturning aqua nullius: securing Aboriginal water rightsVirginia Marshall

    2015 Stanner Award winner

In the increasingly crowded field of scholarship on Aboriginal legal issues, Overturning aqua nullius makes a significant break-through in our understanding of Indigenous water rights in Australia, a subject that has received insufficient attention. Dr Marshall’s excellent book cements her reputation as a pioneering scholar charting new ground in this important field of law. — Professor Benjamin J. Richardson, University of Tasmania

Aboriginal peoples in Australia have the oldest living cultures in the world. From 1788, the British colonisation of Australia marginalised Aboriginal communities from land and water resources and their traditional rights and interests. More recently, the national water reforms further disenfranchised Aboriginal communities from their property rights in water, continuing to embed severe disadvantage. Overturning aqua nullius aims to cultivate a new understanding of Aboriginal water rights and interests in the context of Aboriginal water concepts and water policy development in Australia.

In this award-winning work, Dr Marshall argues that Aboriginal water rights require legal recognition as property rights, and that water access and water infrastructure are integral to successful economic enterprise in Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal peoples’ social, cultural and economic certainty rests on their right to control and manage customary water.

Something about emus: Bininj stories from Western Arnhem LandEdited by Murray Garde

The emu is an iconic Australian bird of significance to all Australians, but especially so to Indigenous Australians, who have had a special relationship with this curious animal for thousands of years. In this bilingual, highly illustrated, full-colour publication, Something about emus reveals valuable ecological knowledge in a collection of essays by senior members of the Bininj Kunwok language group from Kakadu National Park and Western Arnhem Land. Something about emus goes beyond biology and ecology to encompass other culturally important domains such as the visual and verbal arts, music, ritual and the relationships between humans and animals. Whilst Indigenous ecological knowledge is increasingly acknowledged as a valuable part of Australia’s cultural heritage, such knowledge is most richly expressed in Australia’s Indigenous languages which have largely remained inaccessible to those outside their communities.

Alice’s daughter: lost mission childRhonda Collard-Spratt & Jackie Ferro

Alice’s daughter explores the journey of an Aboriginal woman placed in a remote mission settlement in W.A. at the age of three years. Despite cultural deprivation, dispossession, institutionalisation and isolation she refused to settle for such a lifestyle. Upon embarking on a successful quest to reclaim her Aboriginality, family and mother she developed into a strong Aboriginal woman, poet, storyteller, artist and singer–songwriter. This book is an exciting read. — Emeritus Professor MaryAnn Bin-Sallik

Alice’s daughter is the story of Rhonda’s search for culture and family as she faces violence, racism, foster families, and her father’s death in custody; one of the first deaths investigated as part of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

Written in Rhonda’s distinctive voice, Alice’s daughter is fearless, compelling and intimate reading. Coupled with her vibrant and powerful paintings and poetry, Rhonda’s is a journey of sadness, humour, resilience and ultimately survival.

Against native title: everyday Aboriginal identities in outback AustraliaEve Vincent

Against native title is about one group’s lived experience of a divisive native title claim in the regional town of Ceduna, where, the native title claims process has thoroughly reorganised local Aboriginal identities over the course of the past decade.

The central character in this story is senior Aboriginal woman Sue Haseldine, a self-styled charsimatic rebel and master storyteller, who, with her extended family, have experienced native title as an unwelcome imposition; something that has emanated from the state. For them the native title process has resulted in their own affective dispossession out of which they have gained only enemies. Together they rail against the logic of native title while opposing the extensive mineral exploration underway in their traditional country in far west South Australia.

But, this is not simply a tale of destruction. Threaded throughout is the story of a biannual event called ‘rockhole recovery’; trips that involve numerous days of four-wheel drive travel to a series of rockholes of permanent water sources and Dreaming sites. Against native title captures the energy that fuels this unique, small-scale initiative that expresses the ways in which Sue Haseldine and family continue to care for, and maintain connections to Country outside the native title process.

Against native title pursues a controversial and much neglected line of enquiry to demonstrate that for some, the native title process is not necessarily a force for good. This is a vivacious and very human story which makes a vital contribution to national debates around issues of Aboriginal futures in remote and regional areas.

Yijarni: true stories from Gurindji countryEdited by Erika Charola and Felicity Meakins

Historical accounts by Ronnie Wavehill, Dandy Danbayarri, Pincher Nyurrmiari, Vincent Lingiari, Jimmy Manngayarri, Peanut Pontiari, Banjo Ryan, Maurie Ryan, Blanche Bulngari, Violet Wadrill, Biddy Wavehill Yamawurr and Topsy Dodd Ngarnjalngali.

I highly commend this intimate, heart wrenching, and informative account of one of the single most important events in our recent past. — Peter Garrett, activist, musician and former federal education minister.

Powerful and compelling; essential reading for anyone with an interest in the history of modern Australia. — Henry Reynolds, Historian

On 23 August 1966, approximately 200 Gurindji stockmen and their families walked off Wave Hill Station in the Northern Territory, protesting against poor working conditions and the taking of their land by pastoralists. Led by Vincent Lingiari, this landmark action in 1966 precipitated the equal wages case in the pastoral industry and the establishment of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. While it is well known that the Walk Off was driven by the poor treatment of Aboriginal workers, what is less well known is the previous decades of massacres and killings, stolen children and other abuses by early colonists. Told in both English and Gurindji, these compelling and detailed oral accounts of the events that Gurindji elders either witnessed or heard from their parents and grandparents, will ignite the interest of audiences nationally and internationally and challenge revisionist historians who question the extent of frontier battles and the legitimacy of the Stolen Generations.

With the skills of a multilingual interpreter and one grounded in her own domain, Lizzie Ellis’s narrative moves through these spaces with grace and confidence. — Professor Fred R Myers, Silver Professor of Anthropology, New York University

Pictures from my memory is a compelling and accessible autobiographical account of Lizzie Marrkilyi Ellis’s life as a Ngaatjatjarra woman from the Australian Western Desert. Born in the bush at the time of first contact between her family and White Australians, Ellis’s vivid personal reflections offer both an historical record and profound emotional insight into her unique experience of being woven between cultures — her Aboriginal community and the Western worlds. Ellis shares her first memories as an Aboriginal child living in communities, through her schooling years on the reserves and the progressive cultural changes that her family experienced, to her work as a renowned linguist and interpreter for judges and politicians.

Preceded by an introduction and including a brief anthropological overview of Ngaatjatjarra culture by anthropologist Laurent Dousset, Pictures from my memory provides important insights into the intricacies of an Aboriginal culture, but also describes in a vivid and expressive way the complexities of navigating two worlds.

The politics of identity: who counts as Aboriginal today?Bronwyn Carlson

This is a conversation that Australia needs to have, and demonstrates that Aboriginality is not as black and white as you may think. …Readers from all backgrounds will find this book stimulating and thought-provoking, and it will challenge thinking about the definition of Aboriginality today. — Professor Peter Radoll, University of Canberra

This book is a critical, insightful contribution to the complex and fraught terrain that is Aboriginal identity. The book is beautifully written, compre-hensive, empirically robust and provides a sophisticated analysis of the theoretical debates that continue to swirl around the contested space of Aboriginal identity in Australia. — Professor Maggie Walter, University of Tasmania

…it will be a valuable work in the field, contributing careful and measured analysis of identity politics, which steps beyond the predictable posi-tions frequently adopted by critics…a complex and courageous piece of research. — Dr Allison Cadzow, the Australian National University

    ABORIGINAL STUDIES PRESS10

In this award-winning work Bronwyn Carlson explores the complexities surrounding Aboriginal identity today. Drawing on a range of historical and research literature, interviews and surveys, The politics of identity explores Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal understandings of Aboriginality and the way these are produced and reproduced across a range of sites and contexts.

Carlson points to the multiple, yet narrow definitions of Aboriginal identity that have existed throughout Australia’s colonial history and its continuing impact upon contemporary Aboriginal identities. Emphasising Indigenous debates and claims about Aboriginality, The politics of identity explores both the community and external tensions around appropriate measures of identity and the pressures and effects of identification. An analysis of online Indigenous communities on social media that have emerged as sites of contestation adds to the growing knowledge in this area, both nationally and globally.

Winner of the 2013 Stanner Award for the best academic manuscript written by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander author, The politics of identity is a brave and personal contribution offering a fresh line of analysis to the subject of Aboriginal identity.

Country women and the colour barJennifer Jones

Jennifer Jones’ examination of the relationship between the arbiters of rural respectability and good housekeeping, the CWA, and Aboriginal women is a fresh and valuable addition to Australian racial studies. — Dr Christine Cheater, University of Tasmania

This well researched and highly original book shows the leading role of Aboriginal women in asserting Aboriginal identity and modernity in the era of assimilation policy and continuing racial discrimination. — Professor Ann Curthoys

Country women and the colour bar challenges preconceived notions about race relations in rural New South Wales by revealing the untold story of grassroots efforts by Aboriginal and white women, working together.

In the 1950s and 1960s, in towns across New South Wales, Aboriginal women joined specially created Aboriginal branches of the Country Women’s Association. Country women and the colour bar offers insights into the experiences of ordinary Aboriginal and white rural women as they participated in beauty contests, handicraft lessons

I have read no more powerful docu-ment on the inseparability of Earth and us human beings. — Bob Brown

There are many great Australians, past and present who have shaped our views of Australia. But for me, the voice of Old Man remains the most insightful and dignified measure of what makes the land so vital. He understood what country means and how important it is to sustain our tradition. Big Bill spoke for the Earth. Ma, Bor Bor. — Nova Peris OAM

Known as ‘Old Man’ in this book, but often called ‘Big Bill Neidjie’ throughout his life because of his imposing height and strength, Bill Neidjie wanted to record aspects of his life for a younger generation of Gagadju, to help them look after their country and remember its stories, and for balanda (non-Aboriginal) people.

Told in Old Man’s words, this beautifully nuanced, impressionistic account allows Neidjie to gently emphasise the issues of importance to him. Old Man’s story has a very personal inflection with Neidjie’s words complemented by Lang’s beautiful landscape photos. Structured in the cycle of the seasons, Old Man’s story provides readers with insights into the annual transformation of landscape that are so integral to Neidjie’s story.

Old Man’s story contains many tales of growing up on country. Neidjie always emphasised his passion for the land and the significance of traditional practices, hoping that culture would flourish and be passed on. The book is a powerful contribution to the history of northern Australia told by an iconic figure. Bill Neidjie is perhaps best known for being central to the opening up of his land which led to the creation of the world-heritage listed Kakadu National Park and for recommending it be leased to the Commonwealth Government for it to be managed as a resource for all Australians.
