Message Stick: Bloodlines: The Little Family

Sunday, 26 September 2010

Jimmy Little was Australia’s first Aboriginal recording star with his worldwide 1960s hit song Royal Telephone. Jimmy was born into a musical family on the banks of the Murray River, and although one of nature’s gentlemen, from an early age he had a steely resolve to succeed. In the early 60s Jimmy even outsold the Beatles in Australia and became one of the first Indigenous Australians to break through on radio and television.

Frances, his daughter, is an historian, writer, filmmaker, and activist. And Jimmy’s grandson, James Henry, has inherited the full complement of musical genes. According to James “my earliest memory of performing would’ve been when my grandfather taught me how to play You are My Sunshine, and then I’d play that sometimes up on stage with him. When my grandfather would be playing in a band with all my uncles and they would have jam sessions together, seeing that musical camaraderie kind of made me feel like I wanted a bit of that in my life as I got older.”

Nothing demonstrates the power of bloodline more than the extraordinary story of Jimmy’s stolen generation niece. Jimmy’s sister, Monica had a daughter who was taken as a baby and raised by a caring, white family. Decades later and oblivious to her ancestry, soprano, composer and actor, Deborah Cheetham realised that her uncle was none other, than ‘The’ Jimmy Little.

Deborah has written Australia’s first Indigenous opera about the ‘Cummeragunja Walk-Off’ a protest against maltreatment, in which coincidently, Jimmy’s father played a role.

The Genius Of Design: Designs For Living

Tuesday, 28 September 2010

This episode: Designs for Living, looks at the crisis-stricken decades of the 1920s and 1930s. With the world at the tipping point between two global wars, design suggested dramatically different ideas about the shape of things to come, from the radical futurism of the Bauhaus to the British love affair with mock-Tudor architecture and the three-piece lounge suite.

In Europe, the ‘modern movement’ promoted the virtues of the machine and the machine-made with theories and products like open-plan living, the fitted kitchen and tubular steel furniture which have become absorbed into the mainstream of the designed world.

In the USA, designers like Raymond Loewy and Henry Dreyfuss explored and exploited the dreams and desires of American consumers to develop a market-based approach to design which has become one of the bedrocks of the modern consumer society.

Features interviews with Niels Diffrient and Tom Dyckhoff. Narrated by Denis Lawson.

Seven Ages Of Britain: Age Of Revolution

Tuesday, 28 September 2010

In the 17th century, the people of Britain learnt to question everything. The result was the Civil War, in which everyone, including artists, had to take sides. But out of it came a re-invented monarchy, a scientific revolution and, ultimately, the great Cathedral of St Paul's. Highlights include the courtly portraits of Rubens, Van Dyck and Peter Lely, and the fabulous creations of the Royal Society.

Programme includes: Charles I's execution shirt and painting of Charles with his head sewn back on (Museum of London); Rubens' Apotheosis of James I (Banqueting House); Van Dyck portraits (Tate Britain); Puritan tracts; Civil War re-enactment; Verney family tomb (Claydon House); Thomason Collection (British Library); portraits of Cromwell (National Portrait Gallery); Grinling Gibbons' golden statue of Charles I (Royal Hospital Chelsea); Peter Lely's Windsor Beauties (Hampton Court); Royal Observatory (Greenwich); Hooke's microscope and Micrographia (Science Museum); Wren's plan for London; St Paul's Cathedral.

A Quiet Word With Bill Bailey

Tuesday, 28 September 2010

A Quiet Word With Bill Bailey is an occasional series of one-on-one conversations between Tony Martin and a high profile entertainer.

Martin has been spouting his nonsense for close to three decades, on TV (The D-Generation, The Late Show), radio (Martin/Molloy, Get This), in books (Lolly Scramble, A Nest of Occasionals), as a stand-up comic, and on his website The Scrivener’s Fancy. Now he has taken up interviewing.

In this interview, Martin leads award-winning, stand-up comic Bill Bailey on a rambling conversation that takes in his entire career, from playing the foyer of the Hilton to packing out Wembley Stadium. Martin, who has followed Bailey’s career since just missing one of his early Edinburgh shows in 1991, drags a few skeletons out of the closet and attempts to prove that Bill is ‘comedy’s Andre Rieu’.

Two chairs, no clips, and work-related talk only. A Quiet Word With Bill Bailey is not a show about people’s marriages, divorces, children and parents. It’s about a rather thin, film and comedy nerd talking shop with someone he admires for 26 minutes. There are some brief opening titles, an irritatingly catchy theme tune and quite nice lighting. Apart from that, it’s just interesting talk, surprising tangents and more than a few cheap laughs.

A Quiet Word With Bill Bailey will be repeated on ABC2 - Sunday, October 03 at 6.30pm.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A QUIET WORD WITH is produced by International Skylarking Pty Ltd in association with ABC TV. Executive Producers: Greg Sitch & Tony Martin; Producer: Nikki Hamilton-Cornwall; Director: Annie Maver. ABC TV Commissioning Editor: Amanda Duthie.

James Martin's Champagne

Wednesday, 29 September 2010 New Series

In this new series, amiable English chef James Martin embarks on a journey through Champagne.

James used to visit the Champagne region of France with his father to collect wine. Now he returns in an airstream trailer to explore a region at the culinary heart of France. And he plans to mingle with the locals and perfect his traditional French dishes.

On his travels through the province, James is joined by fellow English chef Lawrence Keogh and Frenchman Daniel. They are looking for the freshest ingredients to turn into delicious meals.

This week, Lawrence joins James in the city of Troyes where he’s been checking out the traditional prune liqueur. Prunelle de Troyes has been brewed by the local monks since the Middle Ages and provides a tangy flambé for the greengages that accompany his cinnamon and plum fritters – all cooked in the shadow of the cathedral. The boys’ first course is escalope of chicken with a warm winter salad of beans, flavoured with tarragon, and all found in the town’s market.

Poh's Kitchen

Wednesday, 29 September 2010

What’s black and knobbly, grows underground, has a complex earthy aroma and almost indescribable taste, and costs up to $3000 dollars per kilo? Truffles of course! This week Poh’s Kitchen is all about the seriously decadent Australian-grown, black French Perigord truffle. Poh and Emmanuel Mollois are off to the Mundaring Truffle Festival in the hills 40 minutes east of Perth.

Pollution and development have decimated the harvests of the black Perigord truffle in France. But it is now being grown successfully in many areas around Australia including Manjimup in WA where the largest mainland trufferie harvested over 1500 kilograms this year. On her visit to the trufferie, Poh was even lucky enough to get a personal truffle hunt with truffle dogs Sunny and Isy, and buy a fresh truffle to bring back to her kitchen.

Back in her kitchen, Poh cooks chicken mousse with truffle soup dumplings. Poh says her recipe is ‘Frinese’ – a fusion of French and Chinese methods using a French chicken mousse combined with truffles and a liquid chicken soup inside a traditional Chinese dumpling.

Emmanuel, true to his French pastry chef training, combines truffles in pastry with a truffle and crème anglaise and apple filling in his ‘tarte coquelin’ with truffles and combines it with a decadent creamy truffle ice-cream.

Poh learnt that you can never put too much truffle in a recipe...it just depends on how much you can afford, and bought by the gram fresh, or in truffle-flavoured oil, salt, mustard, vinaigrette or honey, even a little can take a simple meal to special occasion level.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, September 30 at 6.00pm.

Love, Lust & Lies

Thursday, 30 September 2010

Love Lust & Lies is the fifth film in the documentary series Gillian Armstrong has been making about the lives, hopes and dreams of three lively, working class Adelaide girls since they were fourteen in 1976.

Over more than thirty years, Kerry, Josie and Diana’s struggles have captured all our hearts, and Gillian’s series is the first and longest documentary longitudinal study of young Australians.

Because of the characters’ commitment to truth and their generous relationship with the filmmaker over such a long period, all the films have captured a depth, openness and intimacy about these three ordinary but extraordinary women.

It ‘s been fourteen years since Not Fourteen Again, which focused on the then 33-year-old mothers and their teenage daughters, Rebecca, Wendy and Amy.

In Love Lust & Lies Gillian returns in 2009 to Adelaide to explore where Kerry, Josie and Diana – and their families – are now. Significant changes have occurred in all their lives. The past is revisited and themes of growing up, love lost and found, family, and the part ‘destiny’ and opportunity play in our lives, are explored. The result is emotionally resonant and compelling viewing.

The three women are now 47 and two are grandmothers. And Rebecca, Wendy and Amy, the three teenage girls introduced in the last film, all have children of their own. As well, Josie and Kerry’s families include a new generation of teenagers: Michael and Micaela, Steven and Shannon. All of them have compelling stories to tell.

Love Lust & Lies captures the highs and lows that have occurred in all the women’s lives over the past fourteen years. It explores the complexity, drama, joy and anguish that exist in all families. It exposes the emotional impact of family secrets and ‘skeletons in the closet’.

Love Lust & Lies asks universal questions about life and the opportunities offered by circumstance, and shows how the ‘ordinary’ is quite often extraordinary.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Directed by Gillian Armstrong; Produced by Jenny Day and Gillian Armstrong.

Art Nation

Art Nation’s visual arts commentator Chris McAuliffe, barely recovered from yesterday’s AFL Grand Final, reviews the annual Footy Art Show at the Artists Garden gallery in Melbourne.

This year’s theme, to which 50 artists have responded, is ‘Justice in Football – does it exist?’

According to the organisers, “Seen through the glazed eyes of a whingeing Collingwood supporter or the skewed prism of a Bombers fan, there is probably only injustice on a massive scale. Was Steve Johnson’s elbow to Steve Baker’s eye an acceptable delivery of rough justice? Was the low life who knocked poor Barry over when he was tying his laces merely getting his just desserts when Barry applied the headlock? Is the ‘holding the ball’ rule the stupidest and most unjust rule ever invented?’’

This week in Guilty Pleasures, where well known faces admit to their ‘secret shame’, it’s the turn of Richard Gill, one of Australia’s most notable and admired conductors and music educators, who fesses up to his love of country and western music.

And to close the show, blues and folk singer Jez Mead performs.

Art Nation will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, September 26 at 7.00pm

Please note that this program will screen at 2.30pm in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Talking Heads

This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson’s guest is an Adelaide surgeon whose life story has captured the attention of Hollywood.

Craig Jurisevic was 33 years old when he answered a UN call for volunteer doctors to go to the Balkans to treat victims of the Kosovo conflict.

Once there, he was appalled to find the local mafia and corrupt officials refusing to treat refugees who couldn’t pay, and selling off medical supplies on the black market. Jurisevic attempted to get the UN leader, Kofi Annan, to intervene but when that didn’t happen, in desperation, he blew the whistle in a US military newspaper.

Warned that he was now on a mafia hit-list and with no safe route out of Kosovo, he joined the surgical team of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and effectively crossed the line as a medico. Soon he was not only treating KLA victims of war but was also training them in combat techniques.

Jurisevic talks to Thompson about his struggle to maintain his moral bearings, his perspective on life ten years on, and what he thinks about his story being made into a movie.
