Birds Of Paradise

Sunday, 5 December 2010

Embark on a journey through a riot of colour, plumage and exotic behaviour deep within the forests of New Guinea as we go in search of the ultimate bird of paradise. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, Birds of Paradise showcases what paradise has to offer from beautiful plumage to strange courtship rituals.

New Guinea holds some of the wildest, least explored places on the planet and is covered in tropical forest, with an abundance of fruit and other food supplies. With no significant predators, the birds of paradise that live there have evolved in a super abundance of colour and plumes found no-where else on Earth. These birds have long fascinated Sir David Attenborough and he has made many trips to film them. This natural history documentary picks up where he left off, following two local experts, Paul Igag and Miriam Sumpa as they attempt to film as many of these birds as possible, in order to help protect them.

The birds of paradise form an important part of the rituals and festivals of some of the tribes that live within the forests, as the plumes are used in headdresses at important festivals. Attending such a gathering, Paul and Miriam attempt to identify the array of feathers found in these tribal adornments, to work out which birds are most threatened by hunting.

The displays are mesmerising – the appropriately named male Superb Bird of Paradise transforms his upper body into a reflective bowl of incandescent black and green feathers, while two bright green false eyes stare at the focus of his desire. The Lawes’ parotia has a different strategy – he is a master of detail who meticulously moves leaves so that he can dance unimpeded. Rising up, he extends his feathered skirt and performs a dance that is the envy of any ballerina.

However as development, such as mining and plantations, begins to hit New Guinea, there is an increased pressure on the forests and the birds living within them. Very little is known about the behaviours of the birds of New Guinea, and the research carried out by the team could prove vital when it comes to protecting them.

Lennon NakedSunday, 5 December 2010

Thirty years after the death of John Lennon, Christopher Eccleston stars as the enigmatic musician in a defining period of his life – a time of disillusion, self-destruction, transformation and ultimately, hope.

John Lennon is one of the most enduring figures in musical and cultural history. One quarter of ‘The Fab Four’, peace activist, visual artist and author, he was a man whose personal life was characterised by drama, intrigue and eventually, conspiracy.

A biopic with a stellar lead cast, Lennon Naked charts Lennon’s transition from ‘Beatle John’ to an enduring and enigmatic icon. It covers a period of wildly fluctuating fortunes from 1967 to 1971, from the death of father-figure and manager Brian Epstein through to the break-up of the Beatles, to John’s decision to leave England for New York; a time of worldwide adulation at one extreme, a combination of frustration and despair at the other. It’s the story of an artist destroying everything to find himself – through drugs, break-ups and therapy as he attempts to free himself from the shackles of material wealth and celebrity and establish himself as a solo recording artist.

After Epstein died, the Beatles were left rudderless – and Lennon felt trapped, personally as well as creatively. It was a turning point in his life, and the events that followed led John to shed everything he knew about himself. Yoko Ono was his muse and the catalyst for change. Meeting her altered everything, and led to the acrimonious break-up of his marriage to first wife Cynthia and his decision to start a new life.

Less well known is the story of how Lennon’s father Freddie, a homeless dishwasher, came back into his life after an 18-year absence during this period. John seized on the hope of re-establishing their relationship after Epstein died – only to attack and reject Freddie when he became involved in his ‘primal scream’ pscho-analytical therapy.

Driven by the need to become naked on the inside as well as the outside (for this was the period when Lennon famously photographed Yoko and himself naked for the front cover of an album), Lennon’s growing disillusionment with life in Britain caused him to abandon his home country and start a new life in America. He was never to return…

Christopher Eccleston as John Lennon; Christopher Fairbank as Freddie Lennon; Naoko Mori as Yoko Ono; Claudie Blakley as Cynthia Lennon; Rory Kinnear as Brian Epstein; Andrew Scott as Paul McCartney.

Family Confidential: The Garretts

Monday, 6 December 2010

Once the darling of the wine industry, talented winemaker Andrew Garrett and his family have now been forsaken by the industry that once celebrated them.

Starting their amazingly successful business on a $3000 loan, Averil and Andrew Garrett worked their dream hard with innovative marketing and production and their label became a national and international bestseller. But their high life and rollercoaster ride came to a full stop when fire devastated the historic winery they had hoped to make the headquarters of their empire.

Financially strapped with commitment to expansion plans, they were forced to take on a Japanese multinational as a majority partner, but it was the beginning of the end of Andrew Garrett.

Unable and unwilling to toe the corporate line, Averil and Andrew walked away from their company and bought a magnificent property in the Adelaide Hills, planning it to be the centre of a vineyard, winery and tourist centre.

But planning laws intervened, so Andrew invested heavily in vineyards and again fate turned against them.

A desperate struggle to hang on to their home ended in 2004 when they were evicted. They were declared bankrupt.

But worse was to come.

Willie's Chocolate Revolution

Monday, 6 December 2010 New Series

In this three-part series, British chocolate enthusiast Willie Harcourt-Cooze attempts to create the finest and purest chocolate bar in the world, and teach chocoholics how wonderful real chocolate can be.

Willie is on a mission to create a bar that is both delicious and affordable, but which doesn’t contain the excessive quantities of vegetable fat, sugar and additives that characterise most existing products that line supermarket shelves.

Willie demonstrates just how versatile chocolate is through a range of sweet and savoury recipes including duck, mango and cacao casserole, chocolate mousse cake, sticky cinnamon and cacao buns and a ‘to-die-for’ chocolate ice-cream.

Along the way Willie needs to get the funding and new equipment necessary to produce his new chocolate bars, and he has to somehow persuade the public to love his chocolate and convince retailers to stock it.

Episode one sees Willie kick start his new venture with a visit to Barcelona – a city which has long had a vibrant and progressive chocolate scene. He samples local opinion on chocolate and takes in some of the city’s top chocolate boutiques. It’s evident to Willie that Barcelona has embraced ‘real chocolate’ and he returns home to the UK committed to encouraging Brits to do the same. After meeting with a group of local self-proclaimed chocoholics, it dawns on Willie that the battle to switch British tastes from milky sweet confectionary to flavourful dark chocolate may be harder than he first thought. Meanwhile, things on the production front aren’t any easier as he struggles to raise the £500,000 necessary to expand and re-develop his chocolate factory to produce his chocolate bars. Some relief is offered by a return trip to Venezuela where he manages to source the perfect beans for his new bar.

Sleek Geeks: Eating

Thursday, 9 December 2010

Why do we eat and what does it do to us? This week Karl and Adam examine the science of eating and energy.

Karl explains how eating determines our body temperature, and he illustrates the theory by showing a marathon runner collapsing just before the finish line (hyperthermia) and his daughter diving into sub-zero Antarctic waters (hypothermia).

Adam takes a group of volunteers on a power walk to show just how much work they have to do to burn off their guilty pleasure. Did you know there are 17 teaspoons of sugar in a can of carbonated soft drink? Ruben sets light to a gummy bear to show how much sugar there is in the innocent looking sweet. We decode the Basal Metabolic Rate (the formula will be available on the website) and explain the process of digestion. We meet a fidgetter, whose constant moving and twitching helps him maintain a healthy weight. Karl debunks the belief that you can lose weight by eating celery.

An audience member tries to work out which task takes the most energy in the Rank-o-meter (vigorous arts and crafts, surfing, butchering animals, tai chi) which leads to a discussion on the MET rate – which is the rate at which you burn off energy. We reveal Elvis’s diet and the king makes a rare appearance to perform an even rarer original song ‘Burning Hunk of Lard’.

First Tuesday Book Club With Jennifer Byrne Special

Welcome to our summer celebration of books and reading. This month the club is looking at two new books – the first Peter Carey’s Booker shortlisted, Parrot and Olivier In America – is about the collision of old and new world values. And then they have a cosy crime novel with Kerry Greenwood’s inimitable Phryne Fisher heading up investigations, whilst on holidays appropriately enough, in Dead Man’s Chest. We also look at the books we’re planning to take on holidays ourselves; we catch up with the young readers of the junior book club, and look at some gift ideas for that special person in your life.

Our first Summer Special guest is a former priest who claims that he once fell asleep during one of his own sermons; a position ordinarily assumed by his parishioners. He’s also a newspaper columnist, essayist, educator and author of Things You Get For Free, Bypass: The Story of a Road, and most recently The Lost Art of Sleep, please welcome, Michael McGirr.

Our next guest is former magazine editor turned chic-lit heavy hitter with bestsellers like Mad About The Boy, Cents And Sensibility, and How to Break Your Own Heart to her credit... she’s also a non-stop twitterer, a blogaholic, ladies and gentlemen, Maggie Alderson…

Now that he’s told Skyler (Anna Gunn) his secret, and unaware that Hank’s (Dean Norris) search for his missing informant, Krazy-8, is leading the DEA closer to exposing his drug dealing, Walt (Bryan Cranston) reveals the news about his cancer at a family barbecue.

Although Skyler insists that they will get through it as a family, and Marie (Betsy Brandt) offers to set him up with an oncology ‘dream team,’ Walt still refuses to borrow money from Hank to pay for the first appointment. So, after telling Skyler that he will draw on his pension, he takes the cash from the money he and Jesse (Aaron Paul) ended up with following their aborted drug deal.

Meanwhile, Jesse seeks refuge at his parents’ house, but it’s clear that he’s living in the shadow of his overachieving younger brother, Jake. As Jesse does his best to obey his parents’ rules to keep from being thrown out, he’s surprised when Jake says that he is actually the one that their mom and dad are always talking about.

After Jesse gets a call from his friends looking to buy more meth, Walt adamantly refuses to resume their partnership. Meanwhile, Walt’s first visit to see Dr. Delcavoli makes it clear that he is facing a rocky road ahead.

Finally, after telling Skyler that he needs to give more thought to committing to an expensive series of cancer treatments, Walt vents his rage over his circumstances on an arrogant young businessman’s expensive sports car.
