This offers differentiated and specialized services. The Daily Life Activities Laboratory (AVD) has a house set up and adapted for real t ra in ing in dai ly l iv ing. Cognit ive Rehabilitation uses games and other resources to simulate real activities in a protected environment. Assistive Technology makes tailored orthoses and adaptations to prevent, minimize and correct deformities and provide a greatest level possible of independence and autonomy for patients.

The ABBR Rehabilitation Center is made up of 6 care units and multidisciplinary departments. It helps patients adapt to their disabilities, recovering motor and psychological functions, besides promoting integration with their families and the social and professional lives. Following overall evaluation, conducted by a multidisciplinary team, treatment is completely individualized. Our team is made up of doctors of physiatrists, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social assistants, phonoaudiologists, nurses, music therapists and teachers.

THE ABBR IS ORGANIZED IN TWO MAIN AREAS: THE REHABILITATION CENTER AND THE ORTHOPEDICS WORKSHOP

Daily Life Activit ies Laboratory

Founded on August 5, 1954

Physiotherapy rehabilitates patients by means of study, evaluation and physiotherapeutic

assistance intended to prevent, restore or maintain physical function. Therapeutic mechanisms used include even the most

simple devices, diverse techniques, and even virtual reality. Activities carried out seek to

maximize patients’ functional independence and quality of life, supported by the integrated work of the ABBR multidisciplinary team.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY DEPARTMENTS

SOCIAL SERVICEThis department helps families to help themselves and prepares them for social inclusion, seeking to minimize the difficulties resulting from the social vulnerability that

a disability and lack of money can bring.

MUSIC THERAPYThe method consists of using music and musical elements (sound, rhythm, melody and harmony) to facilitate and stimulate patients’ physical, emotional, mental, social and cognitive health. The department

treats adults and children.

The multidisciplinary departments complement the work of the Rehabilitation Center units.

PSYCHOLOGYThis department provides psychological support for adult and child patients and their families during the rehabilitation process. It also offers psychopedagogical care and vocational orientation, as well as our new service of neuropsychological evaluation and rehabilitation.

PHONOAUDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT The speech therapy department treats adults and children who have speech and language difficulties, learning difficulties, dyslexia, problems with oral motor function and vocal disorders.

PEDAGOGICAL STIMULATIONThis prepares children with perceptuo-cognitive disorders to relate with society and be included in school.

ABBR UNITS

For over 50 years the ABBR Orthopedics Workshop has been working with the Rehabilitation Center, producing tailor-made apparatuses for therapeutic applications, with a standard of technical excellence in rehabilitation and re-adaptation products.

PRODUCTS SUPPLIED BY THE WORKSHOP: Wheelchairs, walkers, bath chairs, crutches and orthopedic shoes.

PRODUCTS MADE IN THE WORKSHOP: prostheses for upper and lower members, orthoses such as: braces, vests and jackets, orthopedic shoes, insoles for: feet with deformities, neuropathic feet and

maintenance of the plantar arch.

In a pioneering initiative in the sector, the ABBR Orthopedics Workshop

trains and specializesits professionals.

Prostheses are devices used to substitute amputated or malformed members.

Orthoses are devices that assist in the functions,or prevent increasing of deformities.

Manufacture of insole for disorders of the feet andshoes for neuropathic feet, partial amputation of the foot other orthopedic disorders.

ABBR STUDY CENTERThis promotes the continuous improvement of our employees, disseminating knowledge through events, lectures and training courses. The TrainingProgram for Young Apprentices is one of these init iat ives. The ABBR has agreements with 22 institutions of higher learning, providing internships and on-the-job training for new generations.

ABBR LEGIONNAIRESSince 1956 the Legionnaires, society ladies, do important voluntary work organizing events and social occasions and a bazaar to raise fund funds for the ABBR. They annually promote a bingo session to support the Music Therapy and Pedagogical Stimulation campaigns of the Institution’s Infant-Juvenile Unit.
