SMO

• Supra Maleolar Orthosis

• Low profile design that crosses the ankle

• Less invasive trim lines than a standard AFO

• Covers about 80% of the surface area of foot

Page 3: ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSES

TYPES

• Static Ankle foot orthoses

• Not solid AFO

• Articulated – that provides desired/ regulated amount of movement

• It may also be used for progressive increases or decreases in sagittal plane ROM and control

TYPES (functional)

• 1. Metal bars or conventional

• 2. Total Contact

• 3. Floor reaction

• 4. Un weighting

• 5. Immobilizing

Articulating AFO

Conventional/Metallic AFO

• Low cost

Disadvantages:-

Heavy

Contains mechanical stirrup, ankle joints…wear and tear,

Is external ,hence less effective

Page 8: ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSES

Total Contact AFOs

• provide sleek, intimate fit with total contact to provide better control

• May be thermoplastic and thermosetting

• higher patient acceptance due to light weight & concealment (150-200gms);

• may be hotter ,if not perforated• more common today

Floor reaction AFO/FRO

• Uses floor reaction force through toe aspect of foot plate to prevent forward tibial progression & subsequent knee collapse

Page 10: ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSES

Unweighting AFO

• May be patella tendon bearing (PTB) ,i,e. specific weight bearing

or

• total surface bearing, TSB (inverted cone with lace closure) to unweight the ankle foot using prosthetic principles

TSB unweighting AFO and specific weight bearing AFO

Immobilizing AFO

• Commonly used with a lower extremity deficiency when ankle immobilization is desired

• – distal tibia/ fibula fracture

• – foot bone fractures

• – tendocalcaneus rupture

• – Diabetic Foot (Charcot Foot)
