A bit about “AbbeyAbbeyAbbeyAbbey----LinkLinkLinkLink”
Dear Neighbours,
Welcome to your October edition of your Abbey-Link.
The new academic year is now well under way, and this can mean the beginning of a
new era for many parents and children. Whether its their first days at primary or sec-
ondary school, or leaving the nest to start College or University, September can be the
start of new beginnings. If you are looking for any help outside of school, we have a
tutor on page 23 who specialises in Maths tuition.
If you are suffering with empty nest syndrome at this time
of year why not try a new venture…... maybe its time to
start that exercise regime, well it is only few months until
Christmas is here! There are local fitness classes that take
place in Abbeydale and Barnwood, see page 16 for more
details . Alternatively why not look at taking up Art Clas-
ses, these take place at Abbeydale Sports and Community
Centre and you can find out more on page 22.
As I write this, it’s certainly feeling as though Autumn is
here, and it won’t be long before the heating is on. We
have some great plumbers in the Abbey-Link, and many of
them have some great offers on, so why wait until Winter,
give them a call now and see what they can do for you.
You can find out who they are on page 38.
Please remember that we have now launched the new
Tuffley-Link magazine, so if you know of any business that
has potential customers in the Tuffley area, and who may
be interested in advertising in the Tuffley-Link please get
them to contact me at [email protected] or
ring 01452 617040
Remember we can be found on our Face book page; www.facebook.com/
TheLinkDirectories or on twitter; www.twitter.com/@Sarah_Gerken
we would love to connect with you.
Congratulations to Michael Webber for winning last months Sudoku
competition, tickets to Cineworld Gloucester will be on their way to
you.
Have a great month
Sarah.

Gardening Tips for October from Garden Delight..Gardening Tips for October from Garden Delight..Gardening Tips for October from Garden Delight..Gardening Tips for October from Garden Delight.. Flowers, Tubs and BordersFlowers, Tubs and BordersFlowers, Tubs and BordersFlowers, Tubs and Borders Now is the time to plant out spring flowering bedding like Wallflowers, Stocks, forget-me- nots and
pansies, try under planting them with winter and spring flowering bulbs to give extra colour. October is a great month for planting out new trees and shrubs, the ground is warm from the sum-
mer and the autumn rain will enable the plants to establish quickly. Is also a good month for moving any deciduous shrubs taking a good root ball replant firmly incorporating some good compost in the soil.
Once the frost has blackened the leaves of Dahlias cut down the stems to about 6’’ and then lift and store in a frost free place ready for next year. Dusting the tubers with sulphur powder will help prevent rotting.
Lift and divide large clumps of early flowering perennials/herbaceous plants, late flowering varieties are best left to the early spring. Replanting the divided clumps will give you new plants and increase the vigour of the older plants.
Tall deciduous shrubs such as Rose, Buddleia and Lavetera should be cut back by a third this stops them rocking in the ground during the winter winds. If they do this a gap appears where the stem enters the soil, this gap can fill with water, freeze and then damage or even kill the plant.
LawnsLawnsLawnsLawns
• Reduce the frequency of mowing raising the blades high, by the end of the month it will be time
to stop mowing all together and put the mower in for service ready for next year. If you haven’t already done so apply a good autumn lawn food which will help control moss and toughen the lawn up for the winter.
Fruit and VegetablesFruit and VegetablesFruit and VegetablesFruit and Vegetables
• Prune back Blackcurrants, Blackberries, Loganberries and Tayberrys train in the new canes to
fruit next season
• Harvest and store pumpkins and marrows before the first frosts, sow cauliflower, peas and win-
ter lettuce under cloches.
• Spray peach and nectarine trees with Dithane 945 to help prevent peach leaf curl.
Dig over veg plots to allow the air and water to penetrate incorporating in any garden compost and manure this will work in over the winter as the frosts break down the soil.
GreenhouseGreenhouseGreenhouseGreenhouse
• Move inside any tender plants to over winter, ensure you watch out for the colder nights when
you may need extra heat or need to apply fleece to give full protection.
• Water only when required and then in the morning only so that foliage does not remain wet
over night. Ensure there is good ventilation to keep up air movement and prevent dampness, take down any shading and make sure the glass is nice and clean to take full advantage of the winter sun.
Plant of the month Plant of the month Plant of the month Plant of the month –––– Autumn Flowering HebesAutumn Flowering HebesAutumn Flowering HebesAutumn Flowering Hebes –––– A wide range of evergreen shrubs which come in all sizes shapes and colours. Generally they have shiny oval leaves and during the summer and autumn months are covered in masses of spike shaped flowers. Flower colour ranges from white to dark blue. Most are compact in shape and height and range from 1-4ft. any garden soil with suit and choose a sunny or partially shaded position. Those with smaller leaves are hardier, prune back straggly or frost damaged growth in May to keep compact and produce flowers. Easy to propagate from cuttins taken in summer. Check out our web site www.gardendelight.co.uk Disclaimer – these tips are the result of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be given. Remember there are principles to successful gardening but no formulas.

It’s Hallowe’enIt’s Hallowe’enIt’s Hallowe’enIt’s Hallowe’en
Hallowe’en has been described as “a perfect example of superstition struggling with religious belief”. We may all be aware of it — but how many of us know the origins of the annual activities of October 31st?
Hallowe’en dates back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. October 31st was the Celts’ New Year’s Eve, as they celebrated the end of the ‘season of the sun’ before the ‘season of darkness’ started on November 1st (their New Year’s Day). The Celts believed that evil spirits came with the darkness and that on October 31st the barriers between our world and the spirit world were at their weakest.
The Catholic Church made 1st November the church holiday of All Saints Day in 835 AD, when all saints are remembered. (The 2nd November is All Souls Day, when the church remembers all those who have died). ‘Hallows’ is an old word for Saint, hence October 31st became All Hallows Eve, then Hallowe’en.
Many of the Hallowe’en activities we take part in today are a mixture of pagan and Christian traditions, with the season of harvest thrown in too. The original Celtic bonfires which were burnt to frighten the spirits away have now become all the candles we light, particularly in pumpkin lanterns (Apparently 99% of all pumpkins sold are for use as these Jack O Lanterns).
It’s thought that orange and black have become
the colours of Hallowe’en because orange is the colour of harvest and black the colour of death. Games such as apple bobbing and snap apples also became popular due to the abundance of apples at this time.
Dressing up also has ancient roots. When people thought this was the time ghosts came back to earth, they would wear masks if they left their homes that night so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.
‘Trick or Treating’ has become much more common in recent years, but it too has medieval origins. To keep ghosts away from their houses people would place bowls of food outside their doors. ‘Souling’ was another medieval European tradition. People would call at homes asking for soul cakes in return for praying for the souls of the donor’s deceased relatives.
Hallowe’en has undoubtedly become a bigger celebration in the last decade, with retailers selling costumes, decorations and accessories, but this success has brought reservations too. Some parents have concerns about their young children out on the street in the dark, or that youngsters may take things too far and make a nuisance of themselves. And although many Christians celebrate it quite happily, others see Hallowe’en as a danger, flirting with the power of darkness and the occult. Some Church youth groups around the country now arrange ‘Alternative Hallowe’en Parties’ on October 31st.
Why on earth do we carve
scary faces in to pumpkins?!
Here, we find out what it’s
all about...
