The Wessyngton mansion was built in 1819 byenslaved workers on the plantation. Joseph named his estate in honor of his ancestors. By 1860 Wessyngton became the largest tobacco plantation in theUnited States and the second largest producer in the world, growing 250,000 pounds of dark fired tobacco. Wessyngton contained 13,100 acres of land in onefarm and over 2,000 acres in other parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. The plantation also held the largest enslaved African American population (274) in thestate of Tennessee in 1860. Wessyngton remained in the hands of the Washington family until 1983 when it was purchased by Glen and Donna Roberts, thecurrent owners. Before Wessyngtons sale it was the largest farm in America still held by direct descendants of the original owner.
