Calculating concentration:

1. Recording spectral absorbance.

2. Calculation of concentrations according to algorithms.

Algorithms based on correlations with reference measurements are stored

in the sensor.

Measuring Principle

• The UV Vis is programmed with algorithms based on correlation data that has been taken from different sites, application and during different times of the year.

• The sensor records the spectral absorbtion, compares it to the stored algorithms and then calculates the concentration of the analyte.

UV-Vis Spectro-photometry (Entire spectrum scanning)

• UV Visible Spectrometry use the full spectrum involving measurement of organics over the entire spectrum starting from 200 nm to 750 nm with adaptive ranging capabilities.

• The system takes care of single bond organics also. Any change in matrix needs recalibration of the system to assess the factor for determination of COD & BOD.

• Preferred tools such as multi-wavelength dual beam scanning in UV-Visible range with library of industrial matrices in analyser with multi-point local adaptive calibrations help to have matrix change adaption seems better for analyser. The measured values are determined from the spectral data .

• The calculation is based on methods and characteristics that were achieved from a multitude of measurement and long time analysis and the observation from UV spectra.

• Thus, correlations vary with the change in waste matrix and these characteristics need to be frequently established in the beginning for better data quality the actual values monitoring using laboratory technique.

ETI UV-VIS Spectrophotometer Sensor

200 nm 720 nm

Measures broad spectrum:

From ultraviolet (UV) to

visible (VIS) light

7

The UV-VIS is a spectrophotometer that is extremely rugged and corrosion

resistant making it suitable for harsh applications. The UV VIS can measure

TSS, Nitrate, COD, BOD, TOC, Dissolved organic carbon and the spectral

absorption coefficient. The UV Vis measures the sample’s absorption of light across the total spectrum of light from ultraviolet to visible light. This is unique as most spectral sensors only measure at one wavelength.

COD: 0-700 mg/l BOD: 0-400 mg/l TOC: 0-400 mg/l TSS: 0-600 mg/l

MEASURING PARAMETERS IN WATER

• COD- Chemical Oxygen Demand• BOD- Biochemical Oxygen Demand• TOC – Total Oxidized carbon• TSS - Total Suspended Solids• PH / ORP – Oxygen Reduction PH• CONDUCTIVITY – Anion & Cation• DISSOLVED OXYGEN• AMMONIUM NITRATE• TURBIDITY

NOTE – All sensor probes are TITANIUM -MOC suitable for all type of harsh environment.

Relation between COD,BOD &TOC • COD or Chemical Oxygen Demand is the total measurement of all

chemicals (organics & in-organics) in the water / waste water

• BOD is a measure of, the amount of oxygen that require for the bacteria to degrade the organic components present in water / waste water.

• The ratio of BOD/COD is about COD is higher than that of BOD maximum of up to 4 times in medium scale industries; but it varies based on the industrial process and nature of the raw materials used.

• TOC - measures the amount of carbon bound to organic compound, hence the relation between COD and TOC will be directly proportional to each other.

• The study concludes that TOC can be reliably used for the generic replacement of both COD (COD=49.2+3.00*TOC) and BOD (BOD=23.7+1.68*TOC) in influent wastewaters but only for COD (COD=7.25+2.99*TOC) in final effluents.

Principle of TSS/Turbidity

15

• Turbidity/TSS is a quantitative measure of remaining undissolved solids in water,

• It measures by 90 degree scattered light principle, passing of optical radiation through a dispersing system dispersed solids reduce radiation power by transforming it to one form of energy, called as absorption,

• the ratio of penetrating to emitting light beams is measured as turbidity,

• for lower concentration scattered light principle, for higher concentration back scatter method.

• Expressed in nephelometric turbidity (NTU) & FNU (Formazin nephelometric unit)

without cleaning system (30 days)with cleaning system (30 days)

A clean sensor ensures accurate measurements!

Maintenance-free sensor lowers ownership and operational

costs. The UltraClean system is very effective at removing all types of fouling, dirt, biofilms, ect. It can even help avoid lime precipitation. Here are two sensors from a side by side trial. Both were deployed for 30 days, the one on the left without the ultraclean and the one on the right with the Ultraclean. AS you can see, the UltraClean system kept clean for 30 days resulting in better data for better decision making.

NOTE; Cycle of Ultrasonic Cleaning is Every One Minute automatically .
