When Michael called Malachi House he was well aware of his impending death. He was seeking a home that would provide a peaceful, compassionate environment for his final days, in keeping with his Buddhist beliefs. We welcomed him to our home and assured him that we are respectful of all faith traditions. Michael was able to continue on his path of mindfulness throughout his journey. He welcomed the counsel and support of the hospice chaplain and was able to benefit from the guidance of the local Buddhist priest. He had a peaceful death surrounded by his loving family. We learned a lot from Michael. We learned that everyone takes their own road

seeking peace and enlightenment. We learned the importance of being mindful in each moment—the joyful moments as well as the difficult moments. We learned that although Michael traveled his own path, he had not gotten lost.

From the Development Corner...

As you can tell from our lengthy visitors list, we love having guests come tour Malachi House. Many times we will hear how apprehensive someone was to come tour because they were not

sure of what to expect. Once guests have

“This is the best Christmas I’ve ever had.” “This is the most attention I’ve had in years.” And even, “This is the first Christmas present I’ve ever received,” - comments we have heard over the years from residents. “Adopt a Resident”

has been an annual event for a number of years. This Christmas season, 30 people “adopted” one of our residents or a “potential” resident. Staff and volunteers assisted our residents with their Christmas gift lists, and

these lists were sent to those participating – a generous, loving group of individuals who then purchased gifts for our residents. Our wonderful elves, Steve and Jody Ondrus, wrapped the gifts and ensured every resident received gifts, even last-minute admissions. This was Steve and Jody’s 15th year working on “Adopt a Resident.” They also came to the House Christmas Day to assist with the festivities, and with the help of other volunteers and staff, ensured that our residents had a wonderful holiday. Two Santa Clauses were in the House – our own Mari DeJesus, Caregiver, and Jim Metrisin. Our dining room table was set with our linen tablecloths and good china, and

residents and their guests enjoyed a delicious holiday meal. Marge Adler, a pianist, played Christmas music during dinner. Iraida Del Valle, LiSandra Del Valle, Julie Stenger, Cindy Oakley, and caregiving staff Iris Figueroa, Cynthia Simmons and Desiree Colon were also on hand to help make this a wonderful Christmas Day for our residents.

Hospice of the Cleveland Clinic is an integral part of the Malachi House mission to provide compassionate care at the end of life. Their Malachi House team consists of Karen Bieranoski RN, Kristen Roemer LPN, Robin Fallon LISW, Deb Fader LISW, Mark Oster, spiritual care, and Patty Dabydeen STNA. Rarely does a day go by that we do not see them at Malachi House, and they demonstrate the loving care that is provided in our Home. A great deal of their time is spent with patients and families to ensure that physical, emotional and spiritual needs are met. Laura Hoeksema, MD, MPH is the associate medical director for Hospice of the Cleveland Clinic and the Medical Director and board member at Malachi House. Dr. Hoeksema is an inspiration to her team and all of us at Malachi House. She provides presence, support, guidance and education to enhance a collaborative environment that promotes exceptional end of life care in our loving home. Thank you Hospice of the Cleveland Clinic for being the blessing that you are to all of us and those we serve.
