  • About the Course Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) technology is widely considered as the most radical transformation

in system control since SCADA. It is increasingly adopted as a key sensor in the context of grid modernization to prevent blackouts and enable effective wide-area control and protection. In the wake of massive power failures that occurred in July 2012, Indian grid will go through a large scale deployment of PMUs, providing a tremendous opportunity to develop new analytics able to create value for the utility while improving reliability for customers. Automatic control action based on real-time data from a wide-area network of PMUs represents a major change in system operations that will be the integral part of electric grid in future. Today such systems are limited in number and capability and significant research in PMU algorithms and Analytics is needed to make such control more prevalent.

Topics This workshop provides a forum for discussing the latest findings in PMU Analytics. The topics to be

covered in more depth are the following: i. PMU standards and compliance testing ii. PMU dynamic performance testing for control and protection applications iii. CT/CVT calibration by PMUs iv. Computation of line parameters by PMUs v. Wide-Area Voltage and Damping Control vi. Wide-Area Early Warning Systems. vii. Wide Area Control with applications to Utility Network

For each PMU use case considered, the presenter will show how to leverage the wide-range of network studies capabilities offered by the Hypersim real-time simulator to achieve a credible concept proving of PMU Analytics in the laboratory, thus minimizing the need for expensive field tests.

About the Speaker Dr. Innocent Kamwa:

Dr. Innocent Kamwa received a PhD in electrical engineering from Laval University, Québec, Canada, 1988, after graduating in 1984 at the same university. Since then, he has been with the Hydro-Québec Research Institute, the largest electricity generator in Canada and one of the world's largest hydroelectric generating companies, where he is Chief Scientist for Smart Grid and Project Manager for Automation and Control. He is also Managing Chief of Power Systems and Mathematics Department with a technical staff of 51 scientists, most of whom hold a Phd or Master degree in Electrical Engineering. In this position, he is responsible of two university chairs in Smart Grids,

sponsored by Hydro-Québec at École Polytechnique and École de Technologie Supérieure in Montréal. With over 25 years’ experience in industry and academia, he has conducted and managed innovation

projects leading to company-wide deployment and performed numerous technical feasibility studies in all areas of power systems dynamics and control. Dr.Kamwa is a registered P. Eng. in Québec and an adjunct associate professor of Power Systems Engineering at McGill University in Montréal and Laval University in Quebec city, where he has mentored more than 30 graduate students since 1991 and stood on numerous Research Committees and PhD Advisory Committees in Canada, France, Belgium, Romania and Sweden. The 2005 IEEE Fellow for “contributions to the identification of synchronous generator models and innovations in power grid control”, is co-Editor in Chief of IET Proceedings on Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Editor of IEEE Trans. on Power Systems and IEEE Power Systems Letters. He is the secretary of Power & Energy Society (PES) Stability subcommittee and Treasurer/Standard Coordinator of its Electric Machinery Committee.

Dr. Kamwa has authored or co-authored over 166 publications including 100 peer-reviewed journal papers, and 131 articles listed on IEEE explore. He was awarded the best Transactions paper prize of the IEEE/PES in 1998, 2003 and 2009 and the outstanding IEEE/PES standard prize in 1998, 2007 and 2012. CPRI has expertise in the area of Simulation, Diagnostics, System Analysis and Testing. CPRI laboratories have modern equipment needed for Power system simulation, Short circuit testing, Diagnostics of equipment, Materials engineering, Seismic qualification etc. CPRI has experienced faculty in different subjects of power sector with practical experience in their areas of interest as well as extensive experience in presenting courses/seminars.

Over the period, CPRI officers have gained lot of practical knowledge concerning to testing and operational problems of the industry. CPRI is a leading provider of Training and Continuing Education to Utilities, PSUs across the country for the past 50 years. CPRI is continuously setting new standards in training and continuing education from basic theoretical information to practical hands-on electrical equipment training. CPRI courses have made substantial impact on the level of training and education to India's electricity utilities, manufacturing companies, transmission and distribution companies. By upgrading the occupational skills of technical workers, CPRI training courses have improved the career path of many electrical personnel as well as contributed towards improvement in electricity efficiency, plant productivity, electrical system reliability and to the overall competitiveness of Indian industry.

About Power Systems Division Power Systems Division with its state-of-the-art facilities and latest software tools offers a wide range

of power system simulation services, including real time performance analysis of various types of controllers such as FACTS, HVDC, SVC and protection relays. It has been conducting power system studies for the past two decades for its own needs and at the request of utilities and manufacturers. To carry out such studies the division possesses Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), RT Lab and various Power System Analysis Software Packages. Power Systems Division has carried out for the first time in the country the pilot project on "Protection system study and Protection audit" of selected DTL transmission system. Furthermore the Division is accredited by ISO: 9001-2008.

The Relay Testing Laboratory (RTL) is equipped with sophisticated Computerized Relay testing systems for testing of Protection relay for all its characteristics/functions meeting its accuracy requirements as per IS:3231 series and IEC:60255 series of standards. The laboratory conforms to ISO/IEC17025-2005 requirements. Field testing of protection relays is also carried out for major power stations and utilities and also undertakes pre-dispatch Third Party Inspection (TPI) on Relay and Control panel.
