We also work with other agencies to provide a broad range of opportunities. There are close ties with Amble, Rothbury and Seahouses where outreach bases are well established. “People with a learning disability should have the same chances and choices as everyone else.” The Government has promised "that people needing care deserve to be treated with dignity and respect." Clients are enabled to plan what they would like to be involved in, and helped to identify what interests they might wish to develop. Staff encourage clients to speak out for themselves, support clients in making their own choices, and promote independent living. Patron: Her Grace the Duchess of Northumberland May 2012 In England, only 6.4 per cent of people with moderate to severe learning disabilities known to adult social services are in paid employment. Our two social enterprises, Pottergate Pantry and the Potting Shed, give clients a feeling of worth, valuable work experience and might hopefully lead to employment in the wider community. We sell a wide range of high quality frozen meals, and hold regular plant sales. “People with moderate to profound learning disabilities frequently require special help with communication, a higher degree of protection from risks to themselves and others, and more physical help.” Clients are encouraged to take part in community activities such as the Alnwick Music & Food festivals, Seahouses project and Accordion Club in Rothury. 1326 adults were supported by care managers in Northumberland at the end of March 2009. We use the media of photography, art and computers to support and inform clients. We work very closely with clients, parents, carers and other agencies including care managers, physiotherapists and educational providers. We are able to offer our facilities to 55 clients at any one time, including those with complex care needs. “The UK has seen a significant shift in the way people with learning disabilities should and could lead their lives, that embraces inclusion, being visible and part of the community, integrating into the wider mainstream provision, achieving health improvements and developing life skills for paid work, leisure and education.”
