formed in germany in 1984, rage count as a standout band of the classic german heavy metal scene, together with other heavyweights such as helloween, running Wild, Blind guardian or grave Digger. the band has been active for three decades, their line-up has changed multiple times and they have released nearly two dozen albums, the latest being lmo from 2013. real classic aboard the A38, a program not to be missed for the old school metal fans!

to start with a classic saying: nothing is what it looks, and that is definitely true for the band swans, who were active from 1982 to 1997, and who have been together again since 2010. they started out from the remains of the no wave scene of new york in the early eighties, and their music has always consisted of post-punk, noise-rock, experimentation, rock and roll and post-rock. they are uplifting and scorching, they operate with a lot of reverb and they are totally free from compromise. led by michael gira, accompanied by old buddy norman Westberg (but not by gira’s former wife and bandmate Jarboe) and with new members, swans may play less chaotic music in recent years, but they definitely haven’t given up their basic philosophy.

25-year-old english singer-songwriter Benjamin Clementine, of ghanaian descent, was born in london, and at the age 20, he moved to paris. he spent a year with busking there and eventually he was discovered by the agent of a small record label. his first ep Clementine came out in 2013 and amazingly, it received praise from paul mcCartney himself who encouraged Clementine to carry on playing music. his debut album, is expected to be released later this year.

Combining speedy metal with modern electronic dance music, drum and bass, dubstep, hip hop and industrial elements, enter shikari are returning to the ship as old acquaintances, having played their first ever hungarian club gig on the same spot - it was an amazing sold out concert. they started out a decade ago as young padawans and since 2004 they have grown into a strong cult band, right before our eyes, as they have played at well-known hungarian festivals as well. they have just recorded a new album, and they are coming back to hungary with new material.

music from liverpool that’s not guitar pop, what is it? A legendary band with an exciting career, levitating from doom metal through goth metal to progressive rock. Anathema were formed in 1990 as pagan Angel, but soon they settled on the name that we know now so well. After numerous line-up changes and a phase influenced by alternative guitar bands such as radiohead, the band has turned its attention to prog metal. they are presenting their brand new album Distant satellites which received five stars from the guardian.

the expression ‘progressive metal’ may sound a bit too serious for some, but when it’s played by a band as fascinating as After the Burial, then you can expect a lot of depth and excitement. hailing from twin Cities, minnesota, the band’s style is a mixture of metal, math rock and a lot of atmospherics. they have played in hun-gary three times, and this will be their first headlining concert here. Before them, three other excellent metal / post-rock bands are taking the stage.

the style of rotfront (including hungarian member simon Wahorn, son of noted artist/musician András Wahorn) speaks for itself: emigrantski ragamuffin - ska, hungarian folk, punk, klezmer and of course ragamuffin and reggae. this concert will be both an album launch gig and a birthday party, celebrating the 25th birthday of the hungarian helsin-ki Comittee, and of course, presenting the material of rotfront’s latest album. support is provided by hungarian band gypo Circus.

this night is nothing but bizarre and sexy darkness, with a band that took its name from the symbol of gigantic dark power: the death star from star Wars. 4-piece Deathstars can be called metal, glam and also goth. formed from a black metal group in 2000, they have already played hungary, when they opened for rammstein three years ago. With their amazing costumes and stage elements, they are returning to hungary to present their latest record, 2014’s the perfect Cult.

Caribou is the pseudonym of Canadian electronic musician Daniel snaith. he started out as manitoba but he had to drop this name when another musician with a similar name threatened him with a lawsuit. he switched to Caribou and then his career really took off: his next three records (the milk of human Kindness, Andorra, swim) received huge critical acclaim. After one album that was released under the moniker Daphni, he is releasing his brand new record our love a few days before the A38 gig. support comes from another noted Canadian artist, Jessy lanza, who incorporates jazz and r&B elements into her experimental electronic songs.

Canadian scott hansen aka tycho is a renaissance man: he’s a painter, a graphic designer, a photographer, a multimedia artist and musician. the music of his 4-member project, named after one of the craters on the moon, presents a unique, delicate, trippy, psychedelic and ambient sound. it’s also labelled as iDm (=intelligent dance music), which is complete with the visuals in live performances. tycho presents his latest album Awake, released this year, and it will be his very first gig in hun-gary. his guest, Christopher Willits, is yet another performer who is involved in fine arts, experimental guitar music and electronica.

it is quite safe to claim that one of the most well-received and talented artists of today is coming to the a38 for a mind-blowing concert: multi-instrumentalist annie clark, or, as most people know her, st. Vincent is about to take the stage of the ship to present her critically acclaimed latest album, and a few older songs too.

Annie erin Clark, born in tulsa, oklahoma in 1982, didn’t really start out as a musician in the business, but as a tour manager. in her teenage years, she managed the tours of her uncle and aunt, who performed under the name tuck & patti. of course, at this time, young Annie was already planning to become a musician herself, having learned to play the guitar and the piano since the age of 12. she attended the Berklee College of music but dropped out after three years, and in 2003, she released an ep containing five songs. then she joined noted psychedelic choral band the polyphonic spree for a tour, and not long after she played as a backing musician for sufjan stevens. Although these experiences proved very useful for her, she decided to finally take things into her own hand.

her first release under the moniker st. Vincent (which she took from the nick Cave song there she goes my Beautiful World) was the paris is Burning ep in 2006, followed by her debut album marry me the following year. A lot of people would have loved to marry her already at that time,

as her Kate Bush-inspired songs took the listener into a magical world. Apart from the drums and the strings, she played all instruments and with two exceptions, she composed all the songs herself.

the follow-up, 2009’s Actor, which was influenced a great deal by movies, received even better reviews, and that was when her name became more and more well-known outside the UsA as well. in less than two years, came another long-player titled strange mercy, her most personal album to date, which already landed in the Us top 20 and ended up no. 11 on pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2011 list.

2012 saw the release of her collaborative album with David Byrne, love this giant, on the cover of which her (and Byrne’s) face was distorted using computer graphics. more and more noted musicians have started to invite her to work and perform with them (for instance she fronted nirvana for one song at the band’s induction into the rock And roll hall of fame), but the highlight of her career came as a solo artist. this february she released her eponymously titled latest album, which is set to end up high on 2014’s end-of-year lists. Described by her “as a party record you can dance to at a funeral”, this is the album which makes everyone forget the Kate Bush comparisons - st. Vincent has developed her own unique style and her appearance on the A38 ship is one of the most anticipated concerts in hungary this year.

aUtUMn oFFersWe have started our fall-winter menu which has been very well received by our guests. one of our most beloved appetizers is the grilled goose liver, which we serve on home-made milk-loaf with purple onion jam.

the most popular of our soups is the wild boar soup with truffle ravioli. from the main courses, it is hard to pick the most popular one, as we have a wide variety of guests.

for lunch, we offer lighter, faster meals, such as the duck breast carpaccio or the salmon steak, which we serve with a croissant filled with chopped up vegetables - thus, the tenderness of the salmon is excellently implemented by the crispiness of the croissant and the flavor harmonies of the vegetables.

guests visiting us at lunchtime can also choose our business lunch along the menu and the current chef offers as well. the price of the business lunch is 1150 ft and it always includes two courses. from this lunch option, the vegetarian version can also be ordered.

A popular favorite of our chef offer is the home-made grape cream pastry, which can be an excellent way to end any meal.Dinners are always more unhurried than lunches, and their atmosphere differs as well. the restaurant of the A38 can be the special location of romantic dinners as the milieu of the ship and the view are both extraordinary. our new wine selection can also add to the right atmosphere. We recommend our perfect double chocolate lava too, from which the hot smoking chocolate flows.

Before concerts our guests can watch the performing bands get ready on the tV of the restaurant, as we broadcast the concert hall programs there. the A38 can also be approached by a ship with a constant timetable, thus you can test our pálinka selection on cooler evenings before concerts, or the prize-winning wines of the talentometer competition. our guests are planning their family celebrations and company dinners in our restaurant more and more often as we try to fulfill everybody’s needs with our unique meal offers.

the exhibition presented now is the third part of the series that can be considered as a series (self authority, 2012; general, 2013; somewhere, 2014) consistently rethinking the relationship between the individual and history, meanwhile also examining what impression history leaves on our human landscapes.

somewhere. this current exhibition refers to spatialness and a certain area or landscape, and does so by suggesting a sense of uncertainty and searching. this is metropolitan landscape art, transpierced by the impressions of history. it is best to imagine a militant monet, who, glimpsing the war helmets among the water lilies, leaves the joyfulness of the impressionists, and changes subjects.

on the pictures of szigeti, there is always something troubling - something we know is there, but still we prefer it not to be seen. We cover it - either with a water lily, or something else. But it is still there, we must watch it while it unfolds: the soldiers’ heads, the military force, the human conflict as a ripped wound on the tray of aesthetic.

We can also associate szigeti’s pictures with the Judith and salomé portrayings, where horror enters the world of mannered aesthetic.

today, when newspapers display mutilated human bodies on the front covers, we might think that these paintings are not effective. yet they are, they lure our eyes into a terrifying game, and there is no way back and you are made to think.

“Whenever i watch a landscape, it is always a good opportunity for me to think things over. i especially like the Danube passages in pest, as i look at the other side of the river. the hills, the chimneys, the water, the clouds in the sky trace out pictures. sometimes, however, all this doesn’t tell the truth, or maybe it’s just me who doesn’t understand

it… or i understand the opposite of what is true, and then i feel the landscape is false. But what would make the landscape false, as it is nature itself! Well, no… the landscape one observes is already the blessing and curse of civilization. that is the landscape. for an animal, it is not a landscape - for it it means smells, trees, rain, mud, cleanness…

for the artist, the landscape is definitely a human creation, and therefore it can be false. false landscape - false, even from the litter fitting in: among light colored flowers suddenly a piece of shiny cellophane. But when i realize it is fake, then somehow the truth seems to happen as well.(excerpt from tamás szigeti’s work monologue)

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the World’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely planet in 2012.

A38 ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
