MISE-EN-SCENE & SOUND (HOSPITAL)

A01 | ZMINA HAWTHORNE

Page 2: A01 unit 1ecdsk

This is one of the first things we see in the clip, it is of Sarah’s daughter Jessica blowing out the candles of her birthday cake. From what we can see, this is a dream that Sarah is having about her deceased daughter, as the candles go out, Sarah wakes up and looks at her surroundings and then realizes she’s in hospital (the use of iconography being the use of the oxygen supply tube and the hospital monitors, her costume being the hospital clothing) but also hopes that her worst nightmare (her daughter being dead) isn’t true.

The use of the green lighting indicates connotations of sickness, and the dirty grimy institutional look of the setting, but also has the connotation of life, which in a way she has lost because of her daughters death. Throughout the clip as Sarah starts to run along the hallway which gives the impression that she’s being chased by the dark and that the dark is going to swallow her like it does in the later part of the film when her and her friends go caving.

The biggest change between this and the previous part of the clip is the change of color, the look of the setting is now a clean, white wall institution. This is now Sarah’s reality whereas before she was still somewhat in her dream.

SOUND

Throughout the clip the diegetic sounds are exaggerated sounds to create impact and to shock the audience watching, these sounds include the sounds as Sarah is running from the darkness and into Beth’s arms.
