A. World-Changer BASICS

The season of Advent is a special time in the church’s life when we celebrate the birth of Jesus and look forward to the fulfillment and affirmation of God’s love! We share the anticipation and preparation for the different revelations of God as He sent His Son to reach into and impact the lives of people. The Advent season begins November 29, 2020, as we investigate the characteristics of Jesus as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace, leading up to Christmas.

The 2020 campaign takes traditional advent themes and makes them relevant to where people are living. It is called Experiencing the World Changer!

Series Introduction: Do we see Jesus the way God intended? Jesus as the Wonderful Counselor who cares about your physical, emotional, and spiritual concerns. Jesus as the strong and powerful Mighty God. Jesus who loves unconditionally and is available forever, pointing to the Everlasting Father. And Jesus, who provides comfort that transcends all as the Prince of Peace. This Christmas, you are invited to get to know Jesus and how God revealed Him through scripture.

Summary: Experience the real World Changer as we reconnect and celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Scripture: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NIV

Goals:1. Engaging culture by increasing the number of people presented with Jesus during the season.

2. Enriching the church community by offering compelling and relevant seasonal tools for church life.

3. Extending the clock for pastors and church leaders by providing a fully planned program to help relieve some of the stress during the season of Christmas.

B. SERMON OVERVIEW

Experiencing the World Changer:Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

In one moment, everything changed. The simple cry of a baby marked a change that would leave the world forever different. Join us this Christmas season as we explore how the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus not only

changed the world but also changed the lives of countless individuals. And in the process, He might change you too. The following provides a quick overview of the sermon for each week.

First SUNDAY OF ADVENT

November 29, 2020

Title: Wonderful Counselor

Authors: Rev. Leah Grayer or Rev. Lee Brown

Big Idea: He guides us as we navigate life’s journey providing hope and direction.

Summary: One famous song proclaims life is a highway. For many people, though, it’s a highway filled with hazards. Fortunately, Jesus is an amazing guide to help us navigate life’s journeys, moving us towards hope. Come experience the difference Jesus makes.

Second SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 6, 2020

Title: Mighty God

Authors: Rev. Robin Munguia or Rev. Neil Atkinson

Big Idea: He is the God who rescues us

Summary: The Biblical word used for Mighty God implies a hero, a God who is mighty to save. But unlike the heroes of movies and comics, God’s love is unfailing, and His grace reaches into the deepest darkness to rescue us from our sins. Come experience the difference Jesus makes.

Third SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 13, 2020

Title: Everlasting Father

Authors: Rev. Dr. Jeff Frymire or Rev. Shannon New-Spangler

Big Idea: He is the Father who never leaves

Summary: An increasing number of children grow up without a father in their lives. Even those who have a father present, face the reality of his humanity and imperfection. In scripture, God is the perfect, loving Father: one who chases us down with his love and will never abandon us. Through Jesus, we have the chance to encounter this Ever-lasting Father. Come experience the difference Jesus Makes.

Forth SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 20, 2020

Title: Prince of Peace

Authors: Rev. Dr. David Aukerman or Rev. Keisha Patrick

Big Idea: His presence is the peace that transcends even the most chaotic of life circumstances.

Summary: The peace which Jesus brings is bigger than our internal experiences. His universal peace was proclaimed by the angels and was experienced by the shepherds as they approached the manger. The Prince of Peace invites us, too, to be transformed through encountering Him. Join us as we dwell in the peaceful presence of Jesus. Come experi-ence the difference Jesus makes.
