A Word from Father Rick
Christ is Risen!
Thankfully, we can still greet one another
in this manner for a few more days. The
Apodosis of Pascha is June 5th followed
immediately by the Feast of our Lord’s As-
cension on June 6th. Please join us for these
joyous celebrations. And just ten days later
will celebrate Holy Pentecost—the Descent
of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on
June 16th.
Spring and early summer are times of
graduation from high school and college
and we congratulate all our graduates and
pray God’s blessings and guidance upon
their future endeavors. I was sorry to miss
our Sunday School and commencement and
Graduation Sunday on May 19th. Thank you
to our staff and teachers for another year of
dedicated service teaching and mentoring
our children.
We had our Metropolis Clergy Retreat
earlier that week and then I travelled to Bos-
ton for my 25th Anniversary of graduation
from seminary at Holy Cross Greek Ortho-
dox School of Theology. It was great to see
classmates, schoolmates, professors and
friends. About half of our class came back
for this event. We received a very beautiful
silver cross with the four-Greek-letter acro-
nym for the school’s name. It also displays
an eagle which is the symbol for St. John
the Evangelist because the theology of his
gospel soars to great heights. Also appear-
ing in front of the eagle is an open book rep-
resenting John’s gospel with the Greek
words, “In the beginning was the word”
from the first verse of the first chapter.
I returned to Chicago for the weekend
Metropolis Strategic Planning retreat. We
spent Friday evening, all day Saturday till
10pm and Sunday afternoon, after Divine
Liturgy, reviewing and finalizing the work
of the ten task forces who drafted goals and
action plans to address issues that were re-
vealed through the SWOT analysis. Now
that this is complete, we move to the imple-
mentation phase with an official launch of
the strategic plan at the Metropolis Clergy-
Laity Assembly here in the
Twin Cities September 25-
29. If you want to review
the current plan, visit

strategic-planning
Thank you to all the volunteers who
worked at the Festival of Nations May 1-5
under the leadership of Tom Lampros, Rich-
ard Kanavati and Emilio Kapatanakis. All
reports have been positive so far. Congratu-
lations to Andrew and Emily Hattling for
representing our parish at the recent Me-
tropolis Oratorical Festival in St. Louis,
Missouri on May 11th. Welcome to Isaiah
Baklund, the newest member of our parish
and the Orthodox Faith. Isaiah has been pre-
paring this past year for baptism and chris-
mation, which took place also on May 11th.
Blessed Father’s Day on June 16th to all our
fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, spiritual
fathers and father figures. Thank you for all
you have done and still do for us, especially
your prayers.
We thank our outgoing Archbishop Deme-
trios of America for twenty years of dedi-
cated service to our Archdiocese. I remem-
ber well his excellent teaching ministry as a
professor of biblical studies at seminary
during my tenure 1990-94, as well as his
two visits to the Twin Cities—for the Re-
publican National Convention in 2008 and
Archdiocese Oratorical Festival in 2009.
And we welcome our new Archbishop
Elpidoforos, who will be enthroned on June
22nd. We look forward to his pastoral leader-
ship, guidance and prayers for the holy
flock in the United States.
Looking forward to Summer Church
Camp on June 29 to July 5. Should be an-
other great year of spiritual learning and
growth along with fun fellowship and mak-
ing new friends. Have a blessed summer but
don’t take vacation from church and Sunday
Liturgy.
Truly He is Risen!

CLERGY-LAITY UPDATE
The Metropolis of Chicago Clergy, Laity, Philoptochos Conference takes place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in
Bloomington, MN on Wednesday, September 25 through Sunday, September 29. This conference is being coordi-
nated by our church, St George GOC and our sister church St Mary's GOC in Minneapolis. There are many inter-
esting and exciting seminars planned over these three days, plus a focus on the Metropolis Strategic Planning of
our Metropolis lead by our Metropolitan Nathanael.
Conference attendees (voting members approximately 250) are elected by their parishes but the conference is
open to all members of our parishes. I have been fortunate to attend four of these conferences and found them to
be fascinating and educational.
I am privileged to be working with Georgia Andron, my co-chair
from St Mary's, to organize and facilitate this Metropolis-wide event.
As more information becomes available , I will be announcing the
upcoming exciting events. I look forward to sharing those updates.
Yours in Christ, Alexis Bighley

The St. George Parish Council met on May 21 to discuss
ongoing initiatives and parish projects. Highlights of our
meeting include:
Treasurer’s Report
John presented a calendar of duties performed by the treasurer to help the Parish
Council understand the routine including process required for deposits and expens-
es. He stated that all expense requests be submitted to the office by Friday of each
week for prompt payment. He also presented the balance sheet as well as revenue
and expenses as of April 30, 2019. He is working to prepare Fair Share Total Com-
mitment report to submit to Metropolis asap.
A motion was made and passed to move $40,000 of the exterior restoration capi-
tal campaign funds back into Morgan Stanley gen ops investment account.
Updated Memorial Donation Policy discussed and approved.
Priest’s Report
Fr. Rick shared briefly about the recent National Day of Prayer ceremony at State
Capitol, Clergy Syndesmos retreat and his trip to seminary in Boston. More detail
was conveyed regarding the Metropolis Strategic Planning initiative after the re-
treat in Chicago. He reminded all of the change in schedule for Memorial services
at Roselawn—new date Monday May 27th 10am general service for whole ceme-
tery, 11:15am service for loved ones at Greek Orthodox section.
Iconography Report
Parish Council authorized engaging a lighting consultant to advise on the design
for the sanctuary. Next meeting for the Iconography committee and the consultant
is scheduled for June 6, 2 pm at the church. Please attend the meeting if interested
in serving on the committee or if you have design experience. A donor committed
$3,500 in funds to support the lighting consultant and the lighting design initiative.
Buildings and Grounds
New lawn maintenance company is doing an excellent job and grounds look very
nice. A professional will be engaged to clean exterior windows. Floors to be
stripped and waxed in near future.
Missions and Benevolence Report
It was reported that FOCUS MN will hold a blessing and open house at their new
location. Refreshments and tours to follow. The St. George community is a signifi-
cant supporter of the FOCUS MN mission. It was discussed that we make a strong
effort as a community to attend the grand opening scheduled for Saturday, June 1,
2019, 10 am – 12 pm at 550 Rice Street, St. Paul.
Youth Ministry
The Parish Council discussed the importance to communicate positively with the
youth-parent advisors as they plan youth events until a permanent Youth Minister
is hired. The Parish Council discussed simplifying future youth events going for-
ward by only holding monthly family nights for all ages. Father Rick volunteered
to prepare the spiritual/religious component for the family nights, allowing the
parent-youth advisors to plan and organize all other components for the monthly
youth gatherings.
Festival of Nations Nanette reported on the Festival of Nations. The festival went well for the most
part but she made some suggestions on how to streamline the festival going for-
ward. It was suggested the committee hold a post-festival meeting to discuss what
went well and what needs to be improved on for the future. John reported that once
he has final expenses have been submitted he will provide a financial report on the
Festival of Nation by next meeting – but early indications point to a comparable
2019 gross returns as previous years.
Saint George Investment Advisor
Last year’s Parish Council approved a motion that the investment committee
solicit bids from new investment advisors, review the bids and make a recommen-
dation how to best proceed with the portfolio management of St. George funds. The
investment committee has scheduled a meeting on Thursday June 13th to accom-
plish this.
