enthusiasts and whisky novices too. If you didn’t manage to make it to Speyside for this year’s festival, there’s always Edinburgh’s Whisky Stramash, Islay’s Festival of Whisky and Jura too has a special event this year. In this Wee DRAM we interview Jan Beckers who has a real zest for life as is evident by his hobbies - Lindy Hop dancing, cake making, scuba diving and of course his job... promoting whisky. Up, Up and Away With Cutty Sark

Look out for new packaging from Cutty Sark blended Scotch whisky which

celebrates its 90th birthday this year. As well as re-launching in Scotland, the whisky will also be scaling new heights, following the announcement of its first ever seaplane partnership with Loch Lomond Seaplanes. Jason Craig, from Cutty Sark said, “2013 is going to be a truly momentous year for the Cutty Sark brand. The stunning bright yellow seaplane really reflects what we hope will be the journey for our whisky brand for the next five to 10 years; from

its roots as a Scotch, to taking flight as an urban, relevant and pioneering whisky for new generation of whisky drinkers.”David West, Director of Loch Lomond Seaplanes added, “When Cutty Sark approached us it was an exciting proposal. As a brand that symbolises adventure, excitement and always challenging stereotypes, we couldn’t wait to be involved. Now to see the seaplane take to the skies from the famous shores of Loch Lomond in front of Cameron House Hotel, it’s clear Cutty Sark has come home.”

Worth billionsOur national drink continues to give us something to shout about. Whisky exports were worth a record £4.27 billion last year, with a total of 1.19 billion bottles exported. Our cousins across the pond make up the lion’s share of the demand in terms of value with a total of £758 million-worth of whisky exported to the US last year, up more than £100 million from 2011. Meanwhile, across the channel, France was still the largest market by volume for whisky, with 153.9 million bottles exported there last year.

Saving the planet Next time you indulge in a wee dram, you could also be saving the planet. A cluster of whisky distilleries have started supplying a new biomass energy plant with enough waste to power 9,000 homes.The forward Helius CoRDe Ltd energy plant was recently opened by Prince Charles in Rothes, Speyside, to transform the by-products from the local whisky industry into power.As well as generating renewable energy, operators Helius Energy also utilise the plant to manufacture animal feed protein supplement.

Auchentoshan Switch, the trans-continental bar swap, is back for a second year. The competition aims to find the best mixologists in both Europe and North America, and then switch them for two weeks, so that the European winner works in New York City and the North American champ samples life working in a top London bar.It is open to bartenders from across the UK, Germany and Sweden, as well as the US and Canada. The initial entry requires an Auchentoshan Three Wood cocktail, and the cut off date is 12th July. Regional heats will take place in the remainder of July and August, culminating in the grand finals in October.

Jennifer Meenan, from Auchentoshan comments, “Our initial Auchentoshan Switch was very well-received and drew a huge number of entries – and fabulously creative cocktails – from bartenders on both sides of the pond.” She continues, “We decided to bring Auchentoshan Switch back bigger and better this year, opening it up to bartenders in more countries and hosting regional heats. One of Scotland’s smallest distilleries is now making a bigger splash in the world of whisky. Kilchoman Distillery has added Loch Gorm to its portfolio. It’s the only sherry cask-matured release from Kilchoman, and only 10,000 bottles of the five year-old bottling will be available worldwide. Aged in Oloroso sherry butts and finished in Oloroso sherry hogshead casks for six weeks, Loch Gorm has been named after the loch near the distillery.Founded in 2005, Kilchoman was the first distillery to be built on Islay for 125 years. Talisker Distillery on the Isle of Skye has opened a brand new £1million visitor centre following a major redevelopment.The investment has seen the creation of a new welcome area for visitors plus an enhanced viewing gallery in one of the distillery warehouses. New tasting rooms have also been created in which visitors can sample the whisky in surroundings which reflect its heritage and provenance. The distiller welcomed 59,767 people in 2012- up by more than 10 per cent from 54,303 in 2011.

Johnnie walker loses its no1 positionJohnnie Walker’s is no longer the No 1 selling whisky in the world. It has been knocked from its position by a whisky from United Spirits called ‘McDowell’s No1’ which sold more bottles last year than Johnnie Walker. The figures were revealed in the annual ‘The Millionaires’ Club 2013’ feature in industry magazine, Drinks International. A spokesperson for Intellima, the research agency that compiled The Millionaires’ Club 2013, said: “The upper reaches of the whisky sector remain a battle between two seemingly unstoppable forces – the global might of Johnnie Walker and the domestic market-driven volume increases of Indian brands selling to a growing moneyed middle class. But now Johnnie Walker has been knocked off its perch by United Spirits’ McDowell’s No 1.” Now eight of the world’s top ten whiskies are based in India. Jack Daniel’s heads up the North American contingent, ranking eighth while Jim Beam was in 11th place.

Bringing the world of whisky to the masses, the Edinburgh Whisky Stramash is happening again in May after its 2012 debut. It returns on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May at The Surgeon’s Hall in Edinburgh, and is aimed at both purists, and anyone else with a passion for whisky.The Stramash combines the opportunity to sample some drams with several installations, like Glenfiddich’s virtual Warehouse 47, Deanston’s interactive vintage photo wall, a pop up speakeasy and molecular mixology.Tickets are available to buy from TicketSOUP priced at £26 for a four hour session (Saturday 25th 12pm-4pm/5pm-9pm; Sunday 26th 1pm-5pm) and this year a specially branded glass will also be included in the price of the ticket. With a selection of whisky and bourbon nearly numbering 100, the folk of Edinburgh can now raise a dram in a brand new whisky and craft beer bar called Jake’s Place. It’s on Market Street, and the concept was the brainchild of Ian Dempster from the bar’s owner, Beds & Bars. He told A Wee DRAM, “As well as the whiskies, we also have some 65 Scottish and American craft beers, and a Scottish/American fusion snack menu of munchies for people to chow down on while they’re having a drink.” He continues, “I’d say that interior is 90% reclaimed and salvaged materials, from corrugated steel to old Highland Park barrels that have been fashioned into the back bar, with the logos still visible, which is a good fit for displaying all our whiskies.”

Edinburgh is the final destination for The John Walker & Sons Voyager - a glamorous 1920s-style yacht - which will be sailing around the world this year. The yacht’s journey will re-create the epic ocean voyages that took legendary whisky man Johnnie Walker from Scotland to the four corners of the world. It will arrive in Europe in May to mark the launch of the new triple malt John Walker & Sons Odyssey and will dock in Edinburgh on 12th-14th August 2013.

the Macallan unveils the Flask in oakley, inc. design collaboration

The Spirit of Speyside Festival took place from the 2nd to the 6th May and by all accounts has been a great success. The festival welcomed both novices and committed connoisseurs from

around the globe who wanted to explore the traditions and passions behind the world’s finest whiskies. There was a packed programme of events, from sipping single malts, touring distilleries and watching wildlife. All topped off with a ceilidh.

Some men are notoriously difficult to buy for, but if the man in question is a whisky lover, then there’s a good chance he’ll salivate at the thought of The Macallan’s new flask (or ‘The Flask’ to give it its full title). Designed for a sporty lifestyle, the single malt has teamed up with lifestyle brand Oakley, Inc. to produce this very cool limited edition. There are still some available from the 100 released, although you’ve got to be feeling flush, as it will set you back an equally as cool £600.Neil Ferrier of Oakley, Inc., said, “I love the story behind The Flask as it was born in a very fitting environment. When Ken Grier (from The Macallan) visited Oakley’s

design bunker, he brought us some great Macallan so we granted him access! After a few drams, he asked Colin Baden, Oakley’s CEO,

arran diStillerS to launch oldeSt Malt to dateIsle of Arran Distillers has released its oldest malt to date – the perfect gift for Father’s Day. The 16 Year Old single malt will be available as a very limited edition, with just 9,000 bottles released worldwide. It is the first in a trilogy of special malt whiskies planned for the countdown to the Arran 18 Year Old malt, scheduled for spring 2015. Commenting on the latest release, James MacTaggart, Master Distiller at Arran, said, “The spirit is non-chill filtered and contains no artificial colours so it retains a full range of aromas and flavours – it smells of honey and ginger and has a smooth taste with waves of sweetness and spice.” Priced at £59.99 for 70ml, the Arran Malt 16 Year Old has an ABV of 46% and is a collectible bottle.

World WhiSky dAyThis year’s World Whisky Day, an initiative to celebrate whisky globally, happens on 18th May 2013. The inaugural World Whisky Day was held in 2012, and saw over 20,000 people attend over 200 events all over the world.Last year, ‘#WorldWhiskyDay’ was a global trending topic on twitter and its Facebook page now has over 5000 Likes. World Whisky Day has been welcomed by the Scottish Parliament and is endorsed by VisitScotland, Scotch Whisky Experience and Heritage Centre and Scotland Food & Drink. World Whisky Day was created by Blair Bowman, a Senior Honours student at the University of Aberdeen. www.worldwhiskyday.co.uk

Ardbeg, the Ultimate Islay Malt, has named its new whisky…Ardbog! Ardbeg – the world’s peatiest whisky and four-time winner of World’s Best Whisky awards– will launch the single malt on 1 June, named “Ardbog Day” this year in a nod to Ardbeg’s latest release. Ardbog Day is set to take place at Ardbeg’s distillery on the south coast of Islay and Ardbeg is calling on its 85,000 fans from 130 countries worldwide to visit Scotland and compete in eclectic events such as bog welly tossing, peat-tasting and even organoleptic orienteering tasting.

A colourful series from The Macallan

Fans of The Macallan, will be delighted to hear that a new 1824 Series has been unveiled. The new range, which showcases two of The Macallan’s greatest

strengths; oak sherry casks and natural colour has four expressions - Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby.Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan Whisky Maker, created the four expressions by identifying the natural colour formed during maturation in different casks types to create the character informed by these colours. The expressions Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby, are all names reflecting the actual colour of the whiskies in the range, but also describe naturally occurring mineral and metals.Bob comments, “The Macallan world of colour is the true inspiration of the 1824 Series. Using colour to drive and define a whisky differs dramatically from the conventional age approach, allowing us to explore different casks and take a more flexible approach to our stock. We have been able to work creatively with the full range of matured stock available, rather than working to a pre-determined character based on age. For me, the key thought in this range is that a great single malt doesn’t need to be 30 years old to taste like a 30 year old.”Bob has been unshackled by the need to draw on casks selected first and foremost for their age. Not only does he make frequent 18,000-mile round trips to Japan to promote single malt Scotch whisky but his Highlander Inn in Craigellachie – the heart of Scotland’s malt whisky industry - has the largest collection of Japanese single malts outside south-east Asia. Until recently the role of whisky ‘otaku’ –it translates roughly as fanatic-was

held by Yumi Yoshikawa who is about to return to Japan. Her successor, Mayu Hamanisi, from Osaka is expected take up her role at the Highlander Inn, in a few weeks’ time. Says Duncan, a former chairman of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, “It’s not just about having shelves full of rare and interesting malts. If you don’t have both

the necessary knowledge and passion, all those bottles become expensive decoration.”

What brought you into the whisky industry?My first professional step into the whisky industry was when I worked as a seasonal guide at Glenfiddich Distillery. After a

year I got promoted to senior guide which involved looking after special visitors and offering behind-the-scenes tours. I did this for a total of six seasons and it introduced me into the Belgian/Dutch whisky scene, setting up my

own whisky tasting business and offering my services to different whisky importers. Later on one of my former Glenfiddich colleagues was working with Douglas Laing & Co and when she left, I asked if she would mind if I applied for her job.

Jan Beckers has a real passion for whisky and a job he loves at Douglas Laing (the company behind Big PeAT) as Malt Ambassador. His passion for whisky is such that he relocated from Belgium to work in the industry. Just like whisky Jan has a real variety to his character from tastings to travelling, to dancing and cake baking. Her answer was no and I made the big step. That was five years ago.

What were you doing before working at Douglas Laing & Co?Believe it or not, I worked for a gas and electricity company in Belgium. After my last summer at Glenfiddich, I wanted a job pretty quickly and started off in a call centre. In the end I was promoted to a business expert, giving training sessions and providing background knowledge to the IT team that was upgrading our software system.

What does your role involve?Working for a small company like Douglas Laing, my role has many facets. Besides the travelling to do tastings and supporting our importers on different whisky events, it also includes some sales, some PR and a lot of whisky tasting. Whether it is trying samples to

decide which cask we bottle next, or trying out different proportions of Malts for a new Vatted Malt (yes, –I still prefer this

terminology).

Where do you like to socialise?

Living in the West End of Glasgow I have plenty of choice, around the corner from my flat or in the city c e n t r e .

it’s a dram at the Ben Nevis or Lismore accompanied by some live folk music, or a pint of real ale at the Bon Accord, accompanied by another dram. On a Friday night (if I’m in the country) I like the odd ceilidh at Sloan’s and when the dancing shoes are still on I might go to the Butterfly and the Pig then the Buff Club. On a Sunday afternoon, I might meet up with some friends for some brunch and a cheeky cocktail in Hillhead Book Club.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?Being trained as a chef in Belgium I still enjoy cooking and I often invite friends over for dinner or to bake cakes on a Sunday afternoon. Even though I’ve always enjoyed dancing when I go out, I never had dance classes until a friend of mine introduced me to Lindy Hop which is a type of American Swing dancing. I am now a member of the baking committee for the quarterly Cake Hop. Cake, dancing and good company on a Saturday night – what more do you want? Well, maybe a wee dram or two!After getting my PADI diving permit in Spain last summer, I joined a diving club in Scotland. I’m still waiting for the Scottish waters to warm up a bit, but I’m looking forward to discover Scotland under water.

What is your most memorable whisky moment?Probably the first time Douglas Laing & Co bottled a cask that I had selected. It was a Laphroaig 13YO. I got a case and still have 2 bottles in a cupboard. They will be opened at some point on a very special occasion. That’s what

whisky is made for. Also winning Whisky Ambassador of the year in 2011 at the Belgian Whisky Awards was an important moment in my whisky life.

What do you say to people who don’t like whisky?Keep looking and I am happy to help you find a dram that you will like. Or surprise them with a whisky cocktail. Why not?

What are you busy organising at the moment?While speaking to you I’m on the train to Frankfurt, heading of to the Limburg Whisky Fair in Germany. Also we have just launched a special bottling of BIG PEAT which is an online exclusive available through our website www.bigpeat.com.

You get to travel alot, do you have a favourite place to visit?I really like Paris before Whisky Live. Coincidentally, flights are awkward so I generally go a day early and it is still sunny in September. I don’t expect any sympathy. I’m also looking forward to the annual Cinderella Whisky Cruise in Sweden. Visitors do an overnight crossing to a Finnish owned island in order to enjoy duty free prices on whisky as exhibitors, we do this three times in a row. It’s important to pace yourself.

Any plans for the future?With the changes in Douglas Laing & Co exciting times are coming up, with new brands being developed and I’m spreading my wings to travel further and spread the gospel of Single Cask Single Malt, accompanied by my pal from Islay – BIG PEAT.

We have to start with one of our homegrown whisky blogs...www.edinburghwhiskyblog.comThe two guys behind the Edinburgh Whisky Blog - Lucas Dynowiak and Chris Hoban are well known in the Scottish scene, and cover everything whisky related. You will also find them out and about at whisky tastings, whisky speed tastings and such like. I like their blog because they do occasionally rant. They are also never frightened to offer a controversial viewpoint that others may think but dare not write. It’s a popular blog, and they are of course based here so they do have an edge on some of their fellow bloggers.

I hope you’ll get a chance to try a bunch of whiskies and other spirits, too! Just remember that you don’t have to destroy your liver when drinking. Be safe. Have fun.”

www.whiskyfun.comSerge Valentin is the man behind Whisky Fun which he started over 10 years ago, making him one of the most experienced whisky bloggers around. He also has Malt Maniacs another website revered by whisky enthusiasts. Neither of these sites are aimed at beginners and although the tasting notes are very detailed, they are not aimed at newbies. If you are already into whisky they are the best sites around for information. There’s no doubt you can learn from it... but I’m not sure where the ‘Fun’ comes in.

Ardbog (52.1% AbV)Aroma: Deep, enticing waves of pecan nuts, salty toffee & caramels combined with fudge, leather and with a distinct whiff of herbs, lavender and violets. The smoke is soft and aromatic, and is interwoven with salty, savoury notes, such as Iberico ham and olives.The addition of water brings forth herbal, perfumed notes, smoked rhubarb, aged balsamic vinegar and some salty, ‘graphite’ notes reminding you of the Manzanilla cask element.Taste: A full, oily/tingly mouth feel leads into a powerful, salty, savoury burst of flavours including salted cashews and peanuts, clove, aniseed flavoured toffee, green olives and a curious hint of anchovy.Finish: A long, lingering aftertaste, in which the classic Ardbeg sweetness (like a hint of maple syrup) is kept in check by oak tannins, clove and coffee grounds.RRP £79.99                       

The Macallan The 1824 Seriesgold Aroma: a burnished gold spirit offering a lemon citrus nose, then orange peel and sweetness that softens but doesn’t eliminate the zest. A note of vanilla followed more assertively by dark chocolate – with lingering floral and light oak notes. Taste: Citrus and boiled sweets

Finish: The finish is medium sweet, malty and slightly dry. The Macallan Gold (RRP £36). Amber Aroma: a floral, citrus sweet nose gains presence, commanding a chorus of sweet vanilla notes over freshly harvested grain. Raisin, sultana and cinnamon look on as toffee apples and candy floss step into the limelight. Taste: On the palate, fresh green apples and lemons mingle with cinnamon. Ginger notes hover as fruit takes over, with subtle oak lingering. Finish: The finale is light to medium, with soft fruits and cereal, slightly dry.The Macallan Amber (RRP £45).  Sienna Aroma: a warm opening with a subtle vanilla nose, persistent yet not overpowering. Orange arrives, turning zesty and sharp, though tempering green apples add freshness and balance. Next comes white chocolate truffles, chewy and sumptuous, with elegant oak notes. Taste: Dates, figs and raisins lead the palate then make way for nutmeg and ginger with

a splash of oranges and apples, before vanilla returns. Finish: The final fanfare is gentle, smooth and warming.The Macallan Sienna (RRP £66).

Ruby Aroma: Spanish Oak piques the nose before reluctantly admitting rich, dried fruits and an edgy trickle of treacle. A hesitant sweetness enters, then oak returns, burnished and mature. Taste: On the palate a rush of ginger, nutmeg and resin herald orange, sultana and raisin with their restrained but pervasive sweetness. Clove is here and gone, leaving oak the undisputed maestro. Finish: The finish of this ruby-red spirit is long, lingering and reflective.The Macallan Ruby (RRP £120).

Glentauchers 7yo (58.3%) bottled by The Good Spirits Co.Aroma: The nose is powerful, with sweet sherry and rich malt notes. Taste: The punchy palate continues the sherry theme, backed up by burnt toffee, cigar leaf and soy sauce. Adding water opens up more flavours, with sweet spices (cloves, allspice), cereal notes, Edinburgh rock, and a drier sherry aspect coming to the fore. and finishing with a wee prickle like Space Candy.
