EPRI TR-102323 Rev 4 encompasses

updates for newer plant EMC conditions

• Guidelines for Electromagnetic Interference Testing of Power Plant Equipment

• Released in December 2013

• NRC is expected to review

• Updates/Changes

– Clarification of tests methods/limits

– Only limit changes were for RE101/CS114

– Addition of wireless considerations

– ESD is now evaluate instead of optional

– Addresses modular testing

– Reviewed IEC 62003 (standard not endorsed)

– Recommended grounding and connector practices

– Endorses latest revision of test standards

Efforts have begun to update

NRC Regulatory Guide 1.180

• Guidelines for Evaluating Electromagnetic and Radio-Frequency Interference in Safety-Related Instrumentation and Control Systems

• Anticipated Release in 2017

• Will address areas of concern such as CS114

• May involve site measurements and/or cooperation with the industry to determine the plant’s electromagnetic environment

Slide 5 of 18

IEC 62003 is currently going through

its first revision

• Nuclear Power Plants – Instrumentation and control important to safety – Requirements for electromagnetic compatibility testing

• Original Release in 2009

• Anticipated Update Release is 2018

• Will be expanded to address new technologies such as wireless and variable frequency drives

• May encompass electrical systems in addition to I&C systems

Several IEEE activities in the EMC arena

• IEEE may look into generating a nuclear specific EMC standard

– Similar to the EPRI/NRC guide

– Guidance for the use of Military standards

– Complement to IEC 62003

• IEEE Std 473 is currently in the beginning stages of resurrection

– Standard for EME site surveys

– Not a nuclear-specific standard

– Originally released in 1985

– Was withdrawn in the 2005 timeframe

• Acquire representative NPP cables and measure their baseline properties

• Age the cables and repeat the measurements

• Use the results to:

– Establish qualification methods for new cables

– Qualify condition monitoring methods for aging management and fault finding

– Create a database/website of cable properties and characteristics

– Identify areas of future research

CRP Test Conclusions

• Mechanical EAB and IM test results correlated very well with

thermal aging except for materials XLPE, PEEK and XLPO.

• Chemical TGA and OIT tests indicated a clear change for EPR

insulation material during increased aging.

• IR and Impedance test results did not correlate with thermal

aging of any insulation material.

• Reflectometry tests proved to detect aging degradation in

silicon rubber. More thermal aging time is required for the other

insulation materials.

Slide 17 of 18

Proprietary / Duplication Prohibited

• Develop correlation between insulation and jacket degradation/damage and measurable electrical and/or mechanical properties

• Develop equipment and techniques for in-situ testing of cable insulation material

• Develop prognostic methods to estimate remaining useful life of cables

• Develop equipment and techniques for on-line monitoring of live cables
