Lionel undertook virtually every position in the club during his membership, chairing The Rotary Foundation committee, Vice President on several occasions, Information talks, mentoring new members, scribing the weekly newsletter, was passionate about the Rotary Coach program. Lionel was a stickler for correct Rotary protocol, guiding many of us club members on the correct way forward. Lionel served District 9270 and then 9370 with distinction and his passion was membership development and in recent years Club extension. He was instrumental in the chartering of several new Rotary Clubs over the years. Lionel has been recognised as a multiple Paul Harris fellow, recognising his contribution to humanity. Lionel had a way with words on many occasions leaving us not really understanding what he was saying. A true gentleman, supportive, a wicked sense of humour and always there when we needed him. These past twelve months we have seen Lionel courageously deal with his health challenges. He remained positive, never losing his sense of humour, always believing he would beat it. The attendance here today in this sanctuary, is testament to the respect people have for Lionel and how he lived his life. Our prayers and support go out to Lionel’s faithful Annie, who stood firmly with him all these years, and to his children and family. Lionel we know you are with our Lord, now experiencing eternal life, which you so richly deserve. Rest in peace dear Lionel, you are sorely missed. A TRIBUTE TO LIONEL RICHARD WYBROW It is a privilege to say a few words about our friend and fellow Rotarian Lionel Wybrow.

Hilary and I have been blessed to by counted as friends of Lionel and Annie for twenty-six years.

ROTARY FOUNDATION CENTENNIAL In 2016-17, our Rotary Foundation turns 100. That’s a century of Rotary members changing lives and improving communities all over the world. And that’s definitely something worth celebrating.

Through our Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education, and grow local economies. We’ve also been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.

The centennial is the perfect time to share this impressive record with the world. Join us in making sure that every Rotary member and people in every community know about the vital work of Rotary

and its Foundation.

Ways to celebrate Here are just a few ways you can join in and commemorate this historic milestone:

• Plan a special Rotary Day and invite everyone in your community to participate. It can be anything from a concert to a race to a birthday party with a giant cake in the shape of the Rotary wheel.

• Hold a fundraiser in your community to support a Foundation grant project, the Rotary Peace Centers, or PolioPlus.

• Organize or participate in a global grant or district grant project. • Promote your club or district projects that are funded by the Foundation. • Dedicate some club meetings to Rotary Foundation topics. • Challenge members to increase your club’s contributions to the Foundation.

News from the Raaff’s

Veronica's Heart

As most of you will know, two years ago when an MRI was done to check what was thought to be pancreatitis, it was found by chance that Veronica’s aortic valve showed signs of calcification. This has been monitored every six months by a cardiologist and when she saw her cardiologist on Monday to check the status of the aortic valve it was found that the blockage caused by the calcium deposits

had increased significantly and she is scheduled for open heart surgery to replace the valve on either Monday or Tuesday of next week. She is seeing the surgeon, Dr Kleinloog tomorrow morning at which time the date/time will be confirmed.

This will be Veronica’s second heart operation as 23 years ago she had a growth removed from the heart atrium so the prospect of a second heart operation is of concern as she remembers the pain and discomfort only too well. However, please do not be too concerned as valve replacement is now a standard procedure and her cardiologist has confirmed that her heart, thanks to all her consistent exercise is very strong. In fact, he was quite happy for her to continue this week with tennis, Zumba and aqua-robics. We knew from the time the calcification was discovered that a valve replacement would be required at some stage and it is better that it be done now while she is fit rather than when her heart has started to fail. The replacement valve will come from either a pig or a cow so we anticipate either grunts or moos in the future!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Ron. Hope there aren’t too many grunts to follow!

• Anne Mowat is leaving on Thursday (11th) to spend 4 weeks in Scotland – Go safely Annie – So many decisions to make!

Donovan Loubser has been to see the management at the Hypermarket and hey have agreed to let us place a Frog at the entrance. As we collected over R5700 at the last count from the La Lucia Frog – let’s hope “his brother” gives a similar income.

August is Membership and New Club Development Month ……

Which is exactly what we are trying to do – Ant and Dael Connolly are endeavouring to set up a Satellite Club in the Himeville – Underberg area. An interest meeting has already been held - and so far, it is “all systems go”
