One constant in the evolution of personal computers and the Internet has been the increasing threat of computer viruses. Just as cyber-criminals are always looking for new ways to exploit vulnerable computers, companies like Trend Micro are constantly seeking new ways to protect them. Trend Micro’s Research and Development department rigorously searches for methods to combat malware, spyware, Trojan horses, and worms, in support of the company’s vision of a world where it is absolutely safe to exchange digital information.

The Engineering Tools and Services (ETS) department supports Trend Micro’s global research and development teams. It provides these teams with solutions to develop software, survey organizations, and products, and operates a central pool for company data. When the ETS department began to look for a new source control and software configuration management application, the team saw it as a good opportunity to review the department’s IT infrastructure in order to keep up with industry best practices.

Adopting virtualization as a data center strategy yields a healthy return on investmentThe ETS team wanted to move their source configuration management platform from a distributed model to a centralized infrastructure while becoming cost-effective across the company by adopting virtualization as a data center strategy. With these requirements in mind, Trend Micro evaluated different options from a number of solution providers such as IBM, HP, and Dell.

Working with Dell Global Infrastructure Consultants, Trend Micro deployed a robust infrastructure comprising of Dell PowerEdge™ R710, R900 and 2950 servers with Intel® Xeon® processors, virtualized with VMware® vSphere™ 4 server software and running the VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager. Trend Micro also added a Dell EqualLogic PS6000XV storage area network solution to the infrastructure to expand storage capacity.

Sean Tung, lab administrator, research and development department, Trend Micro states, “We assessed the proposed Dell solution against a number of industry benchmarks and Return on Investment assessments and they came out on top assuring us that we had made a sound decision.”

“ We were impressed with the functionality that the Dell EqualLogic solution could bring to our business. It has all the features we need and works perfectly with other applications such as VMware Lab Manager. It’s a simpler, faster, and more reliable system, all for a third of the cost of a fiber channel solution.” Sean Tung, lab administrator, research and development department, Trend Micro

Consolidation of physical servers results in improved performance by 200 percentServer consolidation through virtualization has allowed Trend Micro to eliminate investment in hundreds of PCs, previously required, for application testing. The vast majority of testing is now performed on virtualized servers. Haichuan Qian, vice president, corporate research and development, Trend Micro notes, “By deploying a virtualized solution we have reduced our investment in PCs 40-fold for application testing. Each Dell PowerEdge server is now supporting up to 60 virtual machines for less than a third of our previous budget, resulting in sizeable budget savings for the company.”

Furthermore, it could previously take up to a week to order and provision a new server or a storage disk, a task that can be completed in minutes due to virtualization, resulting in infrastructure performance increase of approximately 200 percent. “We are now able to extract a higher level of performance from our virtualized infrastructure by reducing the time required to set up a new server for testing from seven days to approximately five minutes,” comments Tung.

As a result, the amount of time spent by the ETS team on maintaining servers has also reduced as virtual servers running on Dell PowerEdge servers are simpler to maintain. Jiang Chang, ETS manager in China development center, Trend Micro states, “The resource hours we allocate to the maintenance of servers has reduced by almost 30 percent since the deployment of the virtual servers, allowing us to focus on more strategic tasks.”

Energy consumption falls by 20 percent through deploying a virtualized solutionTrend Micro has observed other efficiencies in their data center since the deployment of a virtualized

solution. As there are far fewer servers in the data center, energy consumption has been reduced substantially and far more physical space is now available to Trend Micro. Tung affirms, “By using a virtualized solution we have been able to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent. In addition, this solution takes up far less space in our datacentre, approximately, only five percent of the space used before.”

Expanding the storage environment efficiently through expert adviceTrend Micro communicated their requirement for an easy to manage storage solution which would scale to accommodate the company’s growth, clearly to Dell. Storage experts from Dell visited Trend Micro’s data center to conduct a feasibility study and collected performance data from the existing environment to determine where bottlenecks in data flow or capacity occurred.

Based on their assessment, the consultants recommended Dell EqualLogic PS6000XV storage area network (SAN) to work in conjunction with Trend Micro’s existing fiber channel system. “We found the evaluation of our existing storage solution by Dell consultants extremely helpful. They identified blind spots in our system that were not visible before and provided us recommendations on expanding our storage environment without having to use additional fiber channel storage,” says Tung.

Investing in business continuity through a robust storage solution Unlike other storage solutions Trend Micro had evaluated, the Dell EqualLogic solution stood out due to the functionality offered by features such as Auto- Snapshot Manager, including automated clone and replication tools and Auto Replication which integrates seamlessly with VMwareR vCenter™ Lab Manager for business continuity. Moreover, on Dell EqualLogic SANs, nodes can

work independently yet also serve as backup for the others, a convenience which was not offered by Trend Micro’s existing solution.

Trend Micro was able to seamlessly integrate a robust virtual iSCSI storage solution into their existing environment at a fraction of the cost of deploying a fiber channel solution. “We were impressed with the functionality that the Dell EqualLogic solution could bring to our business. It has all the features we need and works perfectly with other applications such as VMware Lab Manager. It’s a simpler, faster, and more reliable system, all for a third of the cost of a fiber channel solution,” comments Tung.

Protecting the mission critical environment with reliable and timely support serviceTrend Micro chose Dell ProSupport with four hour onsite response service to protect their mission critical environment from any operational disruptions. Tung explains, “We find the level of service provided by Dell to be timely, reliable and immensely valuable. The knowledge that Dell will resolve our issues in a quick and efficient manner gives us the peace of mind required to focus on areas where our attention is needed most, such as growing the business,” concludes Tung.
