• Expatriate: An expatriate (sometimes shortened to expat) is a person temporarily or permanently
residing in a country and culture other than that of the person's upbringing
• Immigrant: Who moves into another country or region to which they are not native in order to
settle there.
• Distinction: Immigrants usually come over permanently whereas ex pats are usually only in the
country for a set period of time. Immigrants will often get the same type of visa as an expat in the
start. The difference is that the ex pat will usually go home once it expires (but doesn't necessarily
have to) but an person who is immigrating will then convert their visa into indefinite leave to
remain after a certain amount of time which eventually leads to citizenship.
