Notable highlights since our March newsletter include a very special thanks to Barney and Lynn Kogen who hosted and underwrote a very successful Tea & Toddies at their beautiful home on April 6, 2016. Dr. Peter Hotez was presented the Diana Brown Memorial 2016 BRASS Mentor of the Year award and Linda Kuykendall was very surprised to receive the much deserved Angel of the Year Award. You can read more about this wonderful evening inside. Special thanks also goes to Jo Ann Petersen and Rod and Mary Ellen Crosby for helping with the underwriting! On Saturday, April 16th, BRASS sponsored and hosted the annual M.D./Ph.D second look breakfast at the Medical Center Marriott. This event is attended by applicants to the Baylor College of Medicine MD/PhD program from all over the U.S. who have been offered admission to BCM but haven’t made their decision on where to attend medical school. BRASS was touted by the program director, Dr. Sharon Plon, and used as an example of a unique benefit of attending BCM. BRASS Scholars Lin Zhu, Amy Pohodich and Michael Gundry each gave a brief talk on how they have benefited from being a BRASS Scholar. The year ahead promises to be an exciting one for the BRASS scholars and BRASS members. Please join me in welcoming Elsie Eckert as our new 2016-2017 BRASS president. Elsie is a founding member of BRASS and has served on the executive committee for many years, she brings to the position a sincere passion for the BRASS mission and the scholars. Lab equipment, computers to enhance their research, or specially bred control mice for their experiments, whatever is needed, they are welcome to use these funds as they see fit. To date the Wintermann Foundation has given more than $800,000 to help fund the worthwhile and important accomplishments that are milestones in the success of our BRASS scholars’ research. Our BRASS scholars are a tremendous asset to the mentors who run their labs because these extra funds bring much needed support to their best students, when the labs do not have the funding specifically needed by our scholars to help them continue on with their research. In the United States, access to graduate medical training programs such as residencies is a competitive process known as “the Match.” Fourth-year medical students usually begin the application process at the beginning of their (usually) fourth and final year in medical school. After they apply programs review applications and invite selected candidates for interviews held between October and February. After the interview period is over, students submit a “rank-order list” to a centralized matching service by February. Similarly, residency programs submit a list of their preferred applicants in rank order to this same service. The process is blinded, so neither applicant nor program will see each other’s list. All of this represents a moment [they] have been waiting for. Match Day is the cilmination of four of hard work. BRASS Giving In Memory of Diana H. Brown J.
