Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. — Psalm 121:1-2

Year of Mercy Presents: CATHOLICISM

Join us this Sunday evening, October 16th, at 7:30pm in the Church as we continue with Fr. Barron’s video journey through the Catholic faith. This evening’s video, Episode #7, titled “Word Made Flesh, True Bread of Heaven” carries the theme for the teachings of Christ, recorded at the actual locations where those teachings occurred. As we did last Sunday evening, we’ll spend a few minutes after the video discussing our impressions. Come invest your interest and be rewarded with new friends and new knowledge.

We Are Counting On You! Please be aware that the Hospitality Ministers will be counting people during the homily at each Sunday Liturgy in October. The “October Count” helps parishes and the diocese with trends, evaluations, and planning. We will have a Mass count at every Mass.

Mass of Remembrance Sunday, November 6th at 12pm

We will celebrate our annual Mass of Remembrance in English for all who have died this past year. If the funeral of your deceased family member was held outside of our parish since November 2015, please call the parish office by October 28th with the deceased’s name so we can include them in the printed worship aide. Their name will be read during the litany of the saints. Beginning November 1st, the Book of Life

and memory board will be placed in church. You are invited to sign the Book of Life and place a small picture of your loved one on the memory board. You only need to sign the Book of Life one time. This will remain in the church until November 30th. At that time you may remove the picture. For information, call the parish office at 949-951-8599.

Senior Activities All seniors ages 55 and over are welcome.

To help coordinate the event, please call Pearl at 949-770-4939 to assure the

number of seats available. October 18th: Lunch at Don Jose

On Avenida de la Carlota in Laguna Hills, next to Carrow’s. Meet there at 11am.

Friends in Faith We are a ministry for Adults with Special Needs. We celebrate our faith by prayer, music and crafts. While refreshments are served, it is a great time to socialize with our participants. Everyone leaves the

evening nourished spiritually and bodily. We will be starting our fifth year this September. We meet every 3rd Tuesday (October 18th) of the month, September through June, at 6:30pm in the parish hall. We are looking for someone in the parish who has a special talent that would like to share their gift with our participants one evening (i.e. ceramics, story telling, dance, exercise, arts and crafts, etc.). Contact Kathleen Collins at 949-230-4424 or Dottie Gannon at 949-689-3020. If you know of anyone who would like to be part of this ministry, please call us. Thank you for your support and prayers.

Zumba Class Zumba Class will continue on Monday, October 24th from 6pm to 7pm on the Patio. This class is for adults 18 years and older, led by parishioner and Zumba Instructor, Maria Rodriguez, and will meet every other week

alternating from Mondays and Wednesdays. The following class will be held on Monday, October 24th. To attend, we ask a free-will donation at each class that will go to the parish. To contact Maria, please email her at: [email protected].

Gone But Not Forgotten Special Remembrance Celebrations

Honoring our Dead It is our Christian duty to bury the dead; cremated remains are no exception. The Diocese of Orange Catholic Cemeteries had initiated a ‘Remembrance Program’ to provide a dignified complimentary committal of otherwise unburied remains at one of the cemeteries. We offer a committal service from the order of Christian Funeral at Ascension, Good Shep-herd and Holy Sepulcher cemeteries. (Minimal charge for burial permit is not included. The cremated remains must be at least one year old.) ♦ Ascension Cemetery - 11am, Saturday, November

5, 2016. Reverend George Blais, Celebrant. ♦ Holy Sepulcher Cemetery - 2:30pm, Saturday,

November 5, 2016. Most Reverend Bishop Kevin Vann, J.C.D., D.D., Celebrant.

♦ Good Shepherd Cemetery - 10am, Saturday, November 12, 2016. Reverend Jerome Karcher, Celebrant.

Please Contact the Diocese of Orange Catholic Cemeteries for more information at 1-888-534-5020 (press 1), or occem.org.

Operation Shoebox Eyeglass Donation You can donate your old prescription glasses, sunglasses and glass cases to those in need. They will be refurbished so we will accept any style, size and condition. We will be collecting glasses on the plaza after all Masses on the weekend of October 23rd. If you have any questions, please call Diane Sixsmith at 949-587-0704 or Patti Wren at 949-859-7854.

Friday, December 2nd 7pm in the Church

Noel Night is back this year. Come enjoy Christmas carols from around the world

sung by our choirs, cantors and our very own clergy. “Breath of Heaven” will be open for one lucky

parishioner to try out for. If you or someone you know (female) would like to sing this beautiful song by Amy

Grant, come for an audition on Tuesday, October 18th at 7pm in the Music Office. For further details, email:

JMJ 16 October, 2016 My Dearest Parish Family,

God be with us always. One commentary about the readings today says, “We are never alone!” We are always affirmed in our faith in God who is ever present – one of the names God revealed to us is “Emmanuel – God with us.” We are asked to celebrate this by coming together on the Lord’s Day Sunday to encounter Him. One other way in which we encounter God is through one another. The on-going Parish Festival Santiago is our way of encounter and fellowship. Celebrating our “Calling” and coming together as a Parish Family. We take this time to really enjoy what we have put together so we can have this opportunity to “let down our hair and have fun.” This weekend we have an opportunity as well to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need. We have a second collection to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew. We have announced that we will ask the Diocese that 50% of what we have collected be given directly to Fr. Marc’s orphanage which was severely damaged by the hurricane. Next Sunday is Mission Sunday – I recall the words of St. Therese of the Child Jesus: “Il vaux mieux parler a Dieu, que de parler de Dieu. It is better to talk to God than to talk about God.“ As a Parish Family let us continue to pray for one another

and for the task ahead of us. We are always stronger together in faith and trust to our Loving God.

Next week, I will be sharing with you our Parish Mission Statement. Our Pastoral Council began the reflections and formulation of the Statement and it has gone through the Leadership Committees of our Parish. God bless and take care.

Love and prayers,

Fr.

Amor y oraciones,

Padre Thomas Paul K. Naval

California Bishops Announce Support for Prop 62 to End the Use of the Death Penalty

During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we, the Catholic Bishops of California support Proposition 62 which would end the use of the death penalty in California.

Our commitment to halt the practice of capital punishment is rooted both in the Catholic faith and our pastoral experience. All life is sacred - innocent or flawed - just as Jesus Christ taught us and demonstrated repeatedly throughout His ministry. This focus on the preciousness of human life is fundamental to Christianity and most eloquently expressed in the two great commandments: “You shall love the Lord you God with all your heart...love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mk. 12.30-31)

In November - the concluding month of the Year of Mercy - Californians have the opportunity to embrace both justice and mercy (cf. Ps. 85.11) in their voting. We strongly urge all voters to prayerfully consider support for Proposition 62 and opposition to Proposition 66 which will expedite executions in California. For more information on how we fulfill our moral and

ethical obligation as faithful citizens, visit www.cacothlic.org
