INTRODUCTION

National Service Scheme, also known as NSS, is an undertaking of the department of sports and youth

affairs, government of India. It was established in the year 1969 in 37 universities covering all states. The

organization now boasts of 75,000 active and dedicated student members.

The motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU”, which in itself is explanatory of the spirit the organization i.e.,

selfless service and understanding of other person’s view point. It acknowledges the fundamental fact that

individual welfare is ultimately dependent on community development.

The main aim of NSS is personality development through community service. This serves the dual purpose

of inculcating a sense of social welfare and tolerance among the students, and at the same time, provide

unbiased service to the society.

SYNOPSIS

With the idea of community service in mind, the program officer organized the camp in village Basipipri,Badgaunda (Mhow), situated at 23 kms. from college. The village is famous because of serene naturalbeauty that surrounds it like choral dam and other lakes and ponds. A total of 64 volunteers attended thecamp and stayed at government school campus, Basipipri, Badgaunda (Mhow) which was chosen as campsite.

The regular schedule of the camp began at 5:00 AM which was followed by yoga session beginning at 5:30a.m. generally for an hour and 45 minutes. The breakfast time was set at 7 a.m. after which the NSSvolunteers used to perform SHRAMDAAN that is service through labor, which usually concluded at 11:45a.m. Next the members were involved in maintaining personal hygiene and then proceeded for lunch at 1PM. The students were then enlightened by lectures held by influential guests, from around 2:00 PM to 4:30PM. The members were then given time for relaxation and were provided with evening tea at 4:30 PM. Thestroke of 5:00 PM in the evening marked the beginning of NSS games and in parallel a group of volunteersheaded of for survey in the village. The daily meeting for the planning and review was conducted at 7:00 pmand presided by the program officer. Dinner was served at 7:30 PM and was over by 8:15 PM. variouscultural events were put up by volunteers up to 10:00 pm after which the lights were turned off.

The tenure of seven days reflected the potential of the volunteers. As a part of physical labor manysubstantial tasks were under taken and accomplished successfully.

For the smooth and hassle-free working of the camp, various committees were divided like food committee,security committee, cultural and discipline committee.

The food committee was responsible for preparing, serving, and supervision of meals and cleaning ofutensils. The survey committee visited almost every house of the village to identify major problems of thepeople. The committee also informed them about the government schemes which were designed for theirbenefit.

The cultural committee was assigned the duty of organizing cultural events, both recreational andinformative for the members. A few of these were folk’s songs, poems group discussions, skits on socialissues etc. Also, teams performed Nukkad Nataks on various social issues like alcoholism, literacy, womenempowerment in front of villagers.

In response to the call given by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Swachh BharatAbhiyan was launched at Special NSS camp by the NSS volunteers under the guidance of the ProgramOfficer.

The vision of India getting accustomed with cashless economy and the citizens opting for cashlesstransaction in daily life. There is no alternate of this in near future and People should become more aware ofthe facts and procedures of applying cashless transactions in day to day life. This Campaign aims to create astrong digital economy and put India in the global map of leading and digitally developed countries. Its mainmotto is to make the youth and students getting involved in this major transformation that a nation is goingthrough and thereby helping others to adapt the change.

The NSS volunteers Somil Jain, Shreyas Vyas and Saloni Gupta at Special NSS camp organized anAwareness Program on “MAKING INDIA CASHLESS ECONOMY”. The volunteers explained theimportance of Digital payment, advantages of it and upon different various modes of collection and digitalpayment of product and services through wonderful presentation which covered prepaid cards, Debit /RuPaycard, Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) based Mobile Banking, Mobile E-wallet, Aadharenabled payment system (AEPS), UPI .

The security committee took care of the safety of all members by assigning the duties for the same. At theend the discipline committee ensure that the decorum of the camp was maintained throughout.

The special lecture held by prominent guests were the most enlightening and influential sessions of thecamp. The sessions were held on the topics including ‘Inauguration’, ‘Union of Mind and Soul’,‘Determination and Hard work can change everything’, ‘Digital India’ and ‘Social Work’

The guests lectures were ‘Primary school teacher Mr. Rajesh Chouhan’, ’BK Ritesh’ ,’Mr. Prakash Pathak’,Mr. Mukesh Vyas’ and ’Rajendra Pawar’ each of them had a lasting impact on the inquisitive minds of thestudents.

The camp also included active participation of the volunteers in interaction with the villagers and anexhilarating and adrenaline pumping expedition of trekking to Bamniya Kund and Mehandi Kund.

The intoxicating jubilation of the NSS volunteers could be felt in the air as one of their most remarkableexperiences brought in its totality, the beauty of team work, mutual co-operation and self-less service. Themembers truly lived up to the motto of the program “NOT ME, BUT YOU”.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The camp members got the wonderful opportunity to work selflessly and to develop empathy toward others.The NSS volunteers had the best time of their lives in the seven days at the camp. The feeling of socialservice made them work much harder than they had done before. This services motivated volunteers to workwith their full potential with limited resources. Moreover, it also helped them to learn to coordinate and workwith large groups.

Day first started with cleaning of premises where volunteers were resided. As the volunteers cleaned thecampus using a variety of modern techniques such as digging compost pits, it influenced the villagers inadopting more modern methods of cleanliness.

In order to spread awareness in the various public issues, a rally was led by Program Officer consisting ofthe NSS volunteers by chanting various slogans of awareness. This was followed by “Nukkad Nataks” in themain Basimata square of the village on

Various issues such as women empowerment, literacy, alcoholism etc.

Moreover, the volunteers engaged themselves in a variety of spadework and performed weed cutting,embankments formation around trees, marking of trees by paint, creating a base for camp fire, dug upcompost pits, creating boundaries of the garden, decorated the premises by resources available in thesurrounding. This spread much required awareness among the villagers regarding cleanliness, the use of thethree R’s: Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.

The community service was a phenomenal opportunity for the NSS volunteers to interact and influence thevillagers and it was carried out with much zeal and enthusiasm.

Cultural activities

The day at NSS was concluded with a socio-cultural event which brought out the best in the NSS volunteers.The volunteers learnt and sang various NSS songs like “Naujawan Aao Re” and “Jai Jagat” and performedvarious slits and dramas to entertain each other with their creative sides. A variety of activities such as groupsongs, solo performances, classical and folk dances were performed.

The first day was concluded by a spell bounding and energizing Group Songs. The volunteers enjoyed thatand relaxed themselves.

The second day was dedicated to the group dance. These dances were performed by Volunteers which filledthe crowd with joy and cheerfulness.

On the third day eye opening skits were performed on various topics like alcoholism, women empowermentand literacy, etc.

On the fourth day a group song was performed which included all the heartwarming NSS songs such as “Jaijagat ' and “Naujawan Aao re”. These songs were well received as well as well responded by the volunteersas they boosted the determination of every individual.

On the fifth day, the “Nukkad Nataks” prepared by the volunteers were displayed to the villagers. Every clapencouraged the volunteers.

The last evening was concluded with a closing ceremony which was attended by the well-respected ColonelMajumdar (Registrar, Medicaps University) as well as other faculties of institute and the local people ofvillage.

LECTURE SESSIONS

Every day after the lunch, intellectual session were held. On the first day Mr. Rajesh Chouhan, Primary school teacherconducted a lecture on “Details and experiences of NSS camps”. The lecture also contained inaugural details of NSScamp.

On the second day, BK Ritesh shared his experiences and views on ‘Union of Mind and Soul’ .He taught us how tofocus our energies and efforts .He brought light in mind of volunteers to concentrate. Corresponding to mind and soulare three needs that must be satisfied for a contented life: the physical need is health; the psychological need isknowledge; the spiritual need is inner peace.

On the third day, Mr. Prakash Pathak gave an intellectual lecture on topic ‘Determination and Hard work canchange everything’. He explained that hard work and determination are the keys to success. He also taughtvolunteers how to keep the patience and achieve the goals of life.

On the fourth day the NSS volunteers were given a seminar cum lecture on the topic ‘Digital India’ by Mr. ManojVyas. He briefed the volunteers about various mode of cashless transactions and about the prevailing conditions in theurban area regarding the digitalization.

On the fifth day the volunteers were enlightened by Mr. Rajendra Pawar on ‘Importance of Social work’. He urged thevolunteers to instead be a voice of dissent: “We can either roll over and not assert our identity, or we can speak up forourselves and speak up for the clients that we serve, for the clients that we aim to bring justice and dignity to.”
