TAXONOMIC NOTES By L.B. McQueen

The family Picidae i s str u c t u r a l l y and behaviorally, a compact group, and any strong variation within has been treated with generic segregation.

The decision of the A„O.U„ Taxonomic Committee to merge three America genera, Melanerpes, Centurus, and Asyndesmus, i s of i n t e r e s t , since a generic status for the well-marked Centurus group seems l o g i c a l , i f only on the basis of plumage. There are about 12 recognized species in this group with the "generic" characteri s t i c s of the following combination: Dorsal barring of black and white; unmarked, tan or gray face and underparts, often with reddish or yellowish belly; barred flanks; white rump; bright color - mostly red - on crown and nape (a sexually dimorphic marking); s i z e generally uniform and considered "medium" in rel a t i o n to other genera of woodpeckers.

The Melanerpes group on the other hand, i s polymorphic, which led to the generic status of species. Thus, our familiar Acorn Woodpecker was given the genus Balanosphyra by Swainson and maintained by Oberholser; while the Lewis' Woodpecker was f i n a l l y accepted as genus Asyndesmus, after being included in Melanerpes by some (when i t was given the spe c i f i c name torquatusI). The Red-headed Woodpecker (M. erythrocephalus) remained the type species of the genus since Linnaeus. Unlike the Centurus group, there i s great difference in plumage c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s between these woodpeckers, although s t r u c t u r a l s i m i l a r i t i e s are obvious. Most accepted c l a s s i f i c a t i o n s kept the Acorn Woodpecker and two West Indian species within the genus Melanerpes, but separated the peculiar Lewis'.

Close relationship between these genera has long been recognized. Size, overall dimensions and body proportions are generally consistent; l i f e h i s t o r i e s , behavior vocalizations, and choice of food, are s t r i k i n g l y s i m i l a r , e s p e c i a l l y among sympa-t r i c s . The r e a l i z a t i o n of a single genus was f i n a l l y made with an additional taxonomic problem. A group of South American species given the genus Tripsurus (and Trichopicus) by some, has plumage c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of both Centurus and Me lane rpes, and has been variously assigned to one or the other by different authors. "Tripsurus" bridges the gap and makes i t "impossible to separate the continuum." (Mayr and Short). So Centurus i s merged with Melanerpes, and the genus now comprises about 20 species (most of which are Neotropical).

The o f f i c i a l move to merge the three genera of woodpeckers, Melanerpes, Centurus, Asyndesmus (plus the South American T r i p s u r u s ) , conforms to today's use of the generic category: to show re l a t i o n s h i p s , not the differences of species.

Compiling Field Notes

The following suggested method for recording and publishing field notes for Lane County would probably compromise some of the detail and cross-tabulation capabilities of a computer method. This proposed manual method would be simpler and less costly. I t could be implemented early in 1977.

The manual method would require at least three in i t i a l decisions to be made: 1) a definition of the reporting area or areas, 2) the printing of a standard l i s t of species for reporting purposes, and 3) the variables to be recorded. SWOC members, or others, on a voluntary basis, would make notes of their excursions within the area(s) on the standard reporting sheets. Each person would submit the completed sheets to a compiler once a quarter. The compiler would, of course compile the individual notes into a quarterly report for publication in SWOC TALK. At the end of the calendar year, an annual l i s t could be published. This compilation of the annual notes could be expanded to include additional information not contained in the quarterly reports, such as: general habitats, specific locations where certain species were found and weather conditions.

By utilizing a system of symbols, such information as monthly occurrence, arrival and departure dates, and nesting status could be accounted for in the field notes. Combinations of symbols could be used to keep records for more than one area.

For illustrative purposes, note the following map and sample section from a hypothetical quarterly report Note that the County has been divided into four reporting areas: W=Western Lane Co., N=Northern Willamette Valley, S=Southern Willamette Valley, E=Eastern Lane Co. The WNSE abbreviations can also be found on the sample report at the top of the monthly columns.

In the above example, the Wilson's Warbler was reported from three areas during April with the respective earliest reported arrival dates recorded. In May, the Wilson's Warbler was reported for a l l four areas with nesting reported from two areas.

The standard reporting sheets would include space for special notes as indicated in the quarterly example, The name of observers reporting could be listed as could the total number of hours spent in the field. The observer could also l i s t specific locales whenever an unusual species is found or i f a species has a limited distribution.

Each observer will have two copies of the standard repoting form. When, for instance, the January -March records are submitted to the compiler at the SWOC meeting in April, the observer may uti l i z e the second form for the April - June reporting period. The Compiler will return the original records to the observers at subsequent SWOC meetings. This will allow each observer to eventually transfer his or her personal records onto a single form.

In order to keep the l i s t of species on the standard reporting form, and thus the length of the form, to a workable size, rarities and accidentals can be treated in a few blank spaces at the end of the form. Special narrative can accompany the quarterly publication. Nothing in this proposal would prevent the publication of interesting sightings on a more regular basis in SWOC TALK or any other publication.

If the membership is agreeable to such a proposal, I would volunteer to be the compiler for the f i r s t twelve months. Decisions concerning the area or areas to be treated, modifications to this suggestion, and suggestions concerning treatment of population figures or relative abundance can be made at later meetings .
