From the Athletic Director

here is a limited and ever-diminishing window of time in a young man’s life to play team sports. This is one of the reasons that we offer 36 competitive teams in 15 different sports. In my opinion,

deciding to participate on a competitive team is one of the best choices a young person can make.

As the Athletic Director, it is my goal to uphold the traditions and core values which my predecessors have worked so hard to instill over the last several decades. Sportsmanship, dedication, commitment, team work, and the idea of sacrificing one’s own ego for the good of the whole are the hallmarks of our program. I hope that our student-athletes embrace these qualities and make them part of their persona as they journey from boyhood to manhood.

I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by such a talented group of coaches and athletes. If you have ever been to an Avon Old Farms athletic contest, you know that our athletes compete hard and that out fans cheer loudly. What you might not know is that our coaches spend several hours each day preparing for practices, planning for games, and even driving the team busses! There is a tremendous amount of effort involved from everyone! I sincerely believe that our coaches are fortunate to have such a talented group of athletes and that our athletes are lucky to have such qualified and dedicated coaches. It is a good match.

The varsity football team finished the 2006 season with a record of five wins and three losses, wins com-ing against Taft, Kent, Loomis, Hotchkiss, and North-field Mount Hermon. Outstanding captains Dempsey Quinn, Mike Recchia, and Jon Higginbotham led this senior-laden team. These three fine young men always led through their actions on and off the field with a devotion to each of their teammates and to the game of football. Joining the captains were seniors Matt Beath, Pat Miller, Mike Rubin, Matt Giamalis, Brian Levine, Tyler Bambrick, Chris Hartmann, Tyler Schultz, Andrew Lyons, Tom Mapes, Randall Angel, Brandon Naraine, Matt Keller, Will Sieber, Cody Brumbaugh, Nick Carter, and Mickey Shaw, who formed an incredibly hard-working and cohesive unit, approaching each practice with hard work and a willingness to sacrifice their personal wants for the good of the team. On game day, the men of Avon al-ways conducted themselves with good sportsmanship

and respect for their opponents. They always played the game with a reckless abandon and with a strong will to win. The future looks bright with the return of many talented underclassmen and the addition of many members of our talented junior varsity squad. This year’s squad was composed of thirty-six play-ers who began their careers on the thirds or junior varsity levels. This is a glowing testament to the fine coaching being given to our lower level teams. The seniors from this team will be greatly missed next sea-son and we wish them all luck and success next year in college and in all of their future endeavors.

The junior varsity football team finished on a high note, winning five out of its last seven games. During that stretch, Avon outscored its opponents by a margin of 245 to 102. Leading the way offensively for Avon was James Chamness, who amassed nearly 1,000 yards rushing and added 10 touchdowns this season. Quarterback Lee Moffee along with receivers Mark Joyce, Patrick Miller, and Jack Dowd provided the passing attack. The offensive line consisting of Eric Myers, Drew Dillon, Patrick Wilson, Ross Hofer, and Jack Dowd came together through the season to become cohesive, formidable unit. Fullback Hunter Brown provided the key blocks that often sprung Ch-amness and Corey Cheyne for long runs through out the season. When not playing with the varsity squad, Corey Cheyne provided a definite spark, rushing for over 600 yards in the limited time that he played with the Junior Varsity squad.

Defensively, the secondary of Ben Beath, Jerome “Batman” Wilkins, and John Driscoll bewildered the opposing quarterbacks by tallying 6 interceptions this season. Linebackers Nick Cox, Hunter Brown, and Eric Myers laid hard hits on the opposing running backs, causing several fumbles. The defensive line of Drew Dillon, Ross Hofer, Pat Wilson, and Nick

Tsacoyeanes stopped the running game up the middle and forced opponents to run outside. One of Avon’s prime weapons was their kicker Eóin Lennon. Len-non gave the Winged Beavers good field position all year with his booming kicks out of the end zone. He also had 7 successful on-side kicks this season. The junior varsity players who will return next season will play a significant role in the success of the varsity team next year.

The thirds football team had a fine season in 2006, finishing with a record of 4-6. The season began on a beautiful afternoon versus the Salisbury thirds squad¬¬. The defense played well, allowing only two touchdowns; however, our offense struggled for much of the game. We finally got on the board with about a minute to go in the game when Max Kipnis connected with Demetrios “Big Papi” Papadopoulos on a 35-yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion pass from Kipnis to Will Rosichan was completed as well. After recovering the onside kick, we were unable to advance far enough to tie the game.

Nevertheless, we entered the next couple of games with a little bit of confidence. Playing our next game at the Rectory School, the Winged Beavers jumped out to a 14-0 lead. However, a few turnovers allowed Rectory to get back in the game and tie the score at 14 by halftime. Rectory returned the opening kickoff of the second half for touchdown and added a two-point conversion to take the lead 22-14. Never panicking, the rushing attack, led by freshmen Mike Lee, Mike Sur, and Lincoln Young, ground up the Rectory defense on an 80-yard touchdown drive to make the score 22-20. Then early in the fourth quarter, Kipnis again connect-ed with Papadopoulos, this time on a 40-yard strike to put Avon back in the lead. The defense held up, forcing Rectory turnovers on each of their final three posses-sions to win the game.

Our game with Worcester Academy was even more exciting. After recovering a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, the Avon offense marched down the field and punched the ball into the end zone for a 6-0 lead. This game would be a true see-saw affair, as Worcester then tied the game. The game became truly exciting in the latter stages of the fourth quarter; after forcing a turnover deep in opposition territory, Avon scored a go-ahead TD with about 6 minutes to go. Worcester then marched down the field and scored with about a minute to go, tying the game. Just when it appeared we were heading for overtime, Demetrios Pa-padopoulos again stepped up by returning the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

The next few games saw us fall back a little bit. Our offense had trouble scoring points, and the burden was too much to bear for our defense. We lost in succession to the Suffield JV, 28-0, Brunswick Thirds, 16-14, and Westminster JV, 30-6. When we boarded the bus for our rematch with Brunswick in Greenwich, the team was determined to break the losing streak. With an outstanding defensive effort, the Winged Beavers made Mike Lee’s one-yard TD run stand up in a hard-fought

6-0 victory over the Bruins. Our final stretch of the year brought more heart-

break. A trip to Rumsey Hall did not go well. After jumping out to an 8-0 lead, our defense had trouble much of the afternoon with Rumsey’s rushing attack and the Beavers eventually fell 26-14. Our game with Cardigan Mountain School was even more heartbreak-ing. The defense, led by freshmen John Salamone, Max Stetson, Patrick Hampton, Mike Lee, and Mike Sur, shined in this game. In the first quarter alone we had four goal-line stands. While the offense had trouble moving the ball out of our own end, the defense helped keep us in the game. Despite playing much of the first half inside our own 30, the score at halftime was only 6-0. Opening the second half with our best field position of the afternoon, we were finally able to drive down the field and tie the game at six. Unfortunately, Cardigan was able to score on two long runs during the third quarter to take a 20-6 lead. The Winged Beavers did not give up. With about five minutes remaining, Max Kipnis threw a 60-yard TD pass to freshmen Casey O’Brien, making the score 20-12. The defense then went out and forced Cardigan back on three straight plays and got the ball back for the Winged Beavers. The Avon offense then mounted another drive, moving to the Cardigan 25, but unfortunately the clock expired. Throughout the day, the defense was outstanding, forc-ing Cardigan to dig deep into their bag of tricks.

Our season ended on a high note with the team defeating Indian Mountain School 14-12 in a game played in nothing short of a monsoon. Handling the poor conditions well, sophomore kicker Tom Gutierrez nailed his first two extra points to provide the margin of victory. Overall, it was a fun season and Coaches Riemer, Bolton, and Zavisza wish all of the players success in future years. Many of these players will be making a contribution to the varsity in a few short years and we will follow their careers with great interest.

Varsity Soccer

The varsity soccer team enjoyed another successful season, led by tri-captains Tyler Haddad (WNEPSSA All-Star Selection), Eric LaVorgna (All-State Selec-tion), and Jon Gurry (WNEPSSA All-Star Selection and MVP). Also providing leadership were Jim Eichas (MVP) and Luke Seymour, both WNEPSSA and NEPSSA All-Star Selections. Ryan Ward and Matt Blaine were selected to play in the Connecticut Senior Bowl game. Rounding out the senior roster were Nick Bonino (MIP), Eric Schreiber, Alejandro San Gabino, Tim Russell, Tom Bragg, and Peter Seltenright who all contributed significantly throughout the season. We congratulate the seniors on their accomplishments during the past season.

The Winged Beavers started out the season posting a record of 6-1-1. More importantly, they were playing the best soccer I had witnessed in my tenure here at Avon, and posted impressive wins over Northfield Mount Hermon (eventual New England Champs), Deerfield (2-0), Salisbury (3-1), and Brunswick (4-0). Jim Eichas and Terrell Whitting were largely respon-sible for the 19 goals tallied during this stretch of the season. However, Nick Gantsoudes, Drew LeClerc,

Colin Bradley, and Matt Solomon provided valuable assists in their scoring spree. The defensive ranks of Jon Gurry, Mike Giuliano, Eric LaVorgna, Ryan Ward, Tom Bragg, and Pat Mullane only allowed five goals during this initial stretch. Goalies Luke Seymour and Eric Schreiber had their say in the defensive stand with a few shutouts of their own.

Unfortunately, disaster struck on Parents Weekend with a 1-4 loss. The loss was hard enough to swal-low, but injuries to Nick Gantsoudes, Tyler Haddad, and Jim Eichas were difficult to digest. Next on the calendar was a road trip to Pomfret to play the Tabor School. The soccer gods added insult to injury with Eric LaVorgna and Nick Bonino sustaining significant injuries. However, Nick was able to heal and was back on the field within two weeks. Things did not look good as Avon’s next scheduled match was against Westminster on their Parents Weekend. Within fifteen minutes of the start of the game, Jon Gurry was sidelined with an injury for the remainder of the match. With many players out, Nick DeBlaiso, Trent Soares, Tom Bragg, Alejandro San Gabino, Matt Solomon, and Tim Clark stepped up and preserved a

critical 1-0 win.Next Avon limped to the Kent School and came

away with a disappointing 2-1 loss. The soccer gods intervened and the Kingswood-Oxford match was cancelled due to weather. This was a significant break as it gave the team time to heal; Loomis Chaffee was scheduled next, with Choate, Berkshire, and the Wilbraham Monson School looming on the horizon. Three of these teams were currently ranked in the top five in the league. These games would be criti-cal if Avon was to have any dreams of post-season play. Against the undefeated Loomis Chaffee team, we came away with a draw. Next, the team hosted Choate and after ninety minutes of play, secured a solid 2-0 victory. With two games remaining on the schedule, the team needed one more win to earn a tournament berth. Berkshire came to town highly ranked, and in the pouring rain, the Beavers found a way to win 1-0 to secure its third consecutive post-sea-son appearance.

Avon was seeded 8th in the NEPSSA tournament. Unfortunately, the seedings were not on our side and this meant a trip to Worcester Academy to play the number-one ranked team in New England. The Winged Beavers gave the home team all they could handle during the first half, resulting in a 0-0 draw. However, Worcester found the back of the net early in the second half on a superb strike. Avon contin-ued to counter well, but in the end, could not find the equalizer. Worcester Academy added another goal late in the game to secure the 2-0 victory.

Coach Gammill and I were very proud of this year’s team, especially their perseverance in getting the job done. We wish the seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors.

The 2006-07 junior varsity soccer team had a remarkable season. Returning several players from last year’s squad and adding many talented newcomers, the Winged Beavers had an undefeated 10-0-3 record. Prior to the first game, the team elected three co-captains, all returning players; the lone senior on the team, Carlos Sosa, and two juniors, Nick Farkas and Chris Wieland would lead the team through its season.

The season opened with two road games. The first was a 3-1 win over Trinity-Pawling. The following Saturday, the team headed to Taft; in their previous three meetings, Taft had beaten Avon, and this year’s team was eager to exact revenge. In a tightly contested match, Avon was able to squeeze in a goal just before halftime when Dan Bogdan sent Nick Farkas through on a breakaway. In the second half, Avon controlled much of the action, and only managed to find the net again in the waning minutes, as Carlos Sosa scored to account for the 2-0 final.

Avon did not have much time to rest on its laurels, returning home for its home opener against Canterbury. Avon dominated the Saints, winning 6-0. In the following game, Avon hosted Hotchkiss, another team with a lengthy unbeaten streak against the Winged Beavers. In one of the most closely contested games of the season, both teams had several good scoring opportunities, but neither team could get a ball past the goalkeepers and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. The Avon goalies, Rich Colletti and Chris Wolfel each made some big saves to keep Avon in the game.

The following game was a back-and-forth affair against rival Loomis Chaffee. Avon twice found itself down a goal, but rallied both times to tie the score. The game ended as a 2-2 tie. This was the most goals Avon allowed in a game all season. After two consecutive ties, the team was eager to get back in the win column, and they did so with conviction, running off a four-game winning streak. They beat

Suffield, Hopkins, Northfield Mount Hermon, and Westminster by a combined score of 17-1.

On a roll, the team traveled to Kent on a windy, cool day. After allowing a goal in the opening moments, Avon settled down and soon tied the score. Both teams had several chances to take the lead, but this one was destined to end in a tie, 1-1. The team traveled to Deerfield for its next game, yet another team with recent success against Avon. The Winged Beavers exacted some more revenge, winning 2-1 on Chris Ruhlig’s first goal of the season. Avon completed its unbeaten run with two more wins at home, 2-0 against Choate and a 4-1 rain and mud soaked win over Berkshire.

What made this team so special were its players. A quartet of forwards, Nick Farkas, Dan Bogdan, Scotty Lee, and Marcel Levesque, led a potent attack that netted 39 goals in 13 games. Our midfielders did an excellent job controlling the field and keeping the

pressure on the other team’s defense. Carlos Sosa, Jake Bourgault, Jordan Pritchett and Alex Riccio dominated the center of the field, while the fleet feet of Chris Ruhlig, Evan Quick, Drew Cooper, and Mike Scali controlled the sides of the field. The defense was again a strength of the team, as Avon only surrendered 7 goals all season. Ian Casella led the defense as sweeper, with Chris Wieland, Juan Serra, Flavio Bennini, Ryan Endorf, and Joel Willbrant playing in front of him. With Rich Colletti and Chris Wolfel patrolling the nets, Avon had two reliable goalkeepers to back everyone up and keep the team in many games. The team also spent much of the season without Jae Woo Lim, who was injured early in the season. Despite the loss of this talented three-year JV player, the team showed its depth and skill to come together like they did and achieve an undefeated season.

Thirds Soccer

What a great season – twelve wins and one loss, nine shutouts, and only five goals given up all season!! More important than the numbers, however, was the character of the team that evolved as the season progressed. Older players and younger players – experienced and less experienced – all melded together to form a team that was always competitive, without being obsessed, and fun, but still focused. This year’s team was a truly enjoyable group to work with.

Highlights were plentiful this season, starting with victories over always competitive Loomis, Taft, Salisbury, Choate, and Deerfield. And, while every member of the team seemed to step up at some point in the season, there were certain plays and players that stood out. Chris Canning was a one-man wrecking machine late in the Taft game, ranging from one side of the field to the other to stuff Taft’s attempts to clear their own end. Phil Cassidy scored one in the second Westminster game, picking up a drop ball and floating a shot over the goalie. Phil McEachin found the net in the first half of the Salisbury game off a beautiful one-time touch from Eric Gerdner. Tanner Cunningham set up the third goal in the first Westminster game, making a run down the right wing, crossing the ball, and hitting Graham Speace, in full stride, who touched the ball over the goalie. Against Berkshire, Guillermo Barnes picked up the ball on the left side, faked a defender, and then slid the ball to breaking Graham Speace, just inside the eighteen, who “nutmegged” the goalkeeper. Not to be outdone, Phil McEachin took the ball from the Berkshire goalie in the second half, and calmly lobbed a cross to Eric Gerdner who headed the ball into the empty net. With both of our sweepers out, Phil Cassidy and Armand Wilson anchored a defense that stymied numerous attacks and limited a daunting Loomis offense to a mere two shots on net.

Cassidy, and Ryan Petersen.Congratulations to this year’s award winners (as voted

on by members of the team). “Most Improved Player” went to Tim Longo. Chris Canning was voted “Best Offensive Player,” while Phil Cassidy was selected “Best Defensive Player.” And, no surprise to anyone who saw even one of our games, “Most Valuable Player” had co-winners – Chris Canning and Phil Cassidy. Congratulations on earning the recognition of your teammates and coaches, and opposing coaches as well!

Finally, a special thanks to the man who watched my back during the vicious spitball fights on the long road trips back from games in Greenwich and Pawling – Coach Cugell.

Fourths Soccer

The 2006-07 Mighty Mighty Fourths proved themselves to be worthy heirs to their predecessors. A slow start—two losses to begin the season—had the faithful reeling, but there was naught to fear; the fearless and feckless Fourths of ‘06 would not be denied their place in the winning tradition. Undaunted, the boys recovered and were victorious in nine straight matches, including a revenge win against Granby, who had bested the Beavers in the second game of the season.

It was not until they faced season opener Salisbury that the Mighty Mighties would be halted again. Certainly this gives fodder for future teams to be even more motivated to slaughter Salisbury in years to come.

The story of this team, however, is its players. The senior six, a truly memorable group, led the team by word and deed. Captains Gus Chow, Juan Parra, and Sampson Choi were outstanding in all aspects of their game. All three veteran Fourths players proved their mettle in a variety of ways, not the least of which was the vast improvement each made over his career.

Eric Stacey and Nathan Zinn were also valiant and loyal warriors to the cause. Both have played offense and defense at various points in the season and were willing to do whatever was asked of them to aid in the team’s success. Our loyal manager, Mark Greenfield, was a huge help in managing the logistics of such a large team.

Undoubtedly, the play of the year was the flip throw. No one who saw us could deny that Captain George Springer, the most athletic member of the team, brought a special feature to the team when he unleashed his monster throws. George was even able to score a goal, when a panicked netminder attempted to stop the rocket coming towards him and deflected the ball into the back of the onion sack. Certainly, a memorable moment of the season occurred when members of our opposition seated on their bench took out camera phones and snapped pictures of George in action while we were burying their teammates on the pitch.

Seventeen juniors were a part of this year’s team, each of whom made important contributions. Defensively, Erik Biggart, who played every minute of every game, was not only the goalie’s best friend as the sweeper back, but he was also the winner of this year’s “Sexiest Flow” competition, a huge accomplishment and an honor to both Erik and his hair. Alexander Boulos, a newcomer to Avon, jumped in with both feet and made a big impression as a talented and enthusiastic player. J.T. Hong showed his leadership and eagerness throughout the season. The day boy posse, featuring Ben Simon, James Stallmeyer, Blake Olsen (in spirit), and Sam Kinney provided some awesome offense. Brahm Wachter came out of nowhere to be an outstanding goaltender. Nick Sica improved dramatically from his sophomore season to be a tremendous force. Dan Harris, a legacy, proved his devotion to the team over and over again with some outstanding play and great team spirit. Andrew Coco was injured, but gave his all every chance he had. Blake Forkey played every game with near Yoon Namgung perfection. Tim Beaupre, the most important free agent acquisition in the history of the

MM4s, once again proved his worth. Richard Woodwell, did not just play MM4 soccer, he lived it. The most feared duo on any team that we saw this year, however, were our own; Alex Beir and Ji Hoon Lee proved to be the most fearsome pair of forwards anywhere. They scored at will, or so it seemed, and while each amassed prodigious goal totals, it was all about the team for both of these guys.

The sophomores were a much smaller group, but with no less important an impact. Domingo Diaz de la Guardia, another legacy whose cousin, Nico, once tore up the fields suffered from a leg injury for much of the season and was unable to play as much as he would have wished. However, Mark Clark proved to be unassailable in goal, giving us the delightful problem of which terrific goalie to start. Devoted Red Sox fan Fred Whit “Red” Berry, Perry Wasserbauer, and Ethan Broatch, were all new students to the school who made quick impacts. Size, speed, and telecommunications mastery were tools that these three brought to the team. Nick Biekert brought his awesome footwork, Kaz Nakamura his incredible speed, and Jesse “Spoons” Silverman just brought his “A” game every day, baby. Ian Lapin, one of the last cuts from the ’05-’06 team, came with a vengeance. Every time he touched the ball, good things happened.

The lone freshman on the team was often mistakenly thought to be the lone PG. Tim “Manchild” Kiene, a phenomenal athlete and a wonderful young man fit right in with his older, more experienced Avon brothers with his characteristic good humor and eager attitude. Tim was a great addition to the squad this year.

Another key member of the squad was Coach Jermaine Matheson. An Avonian and Order of Old Farms recipient, Coach Matheson was truly an inspired and inspiring addition to the team. He brought much to this group.

Every single member of this team brought honor to his school and his team this year. Everybody did something well on the field; that is not a surprise. But the fact that every single member of this team continued one of the great sports traditions at Avon is noteworthy. This was a team of champions. This was Avon Old Farms Mighty Mighty Fourths.

Fifths Soccer

The 2007 Fifths Soccer team was comprised of players with a diverse background of talents and athletic abilities. The season was positive overall with all players learning about the game of soccer and sportsmanship while competing competitively with some of the top freshmen-level programs in New England. The season started with a dramatic 0-5 loss to a talented Renbrook varsity team. Instead of getting down on themselves, Avon fifths soccer rallied back and earned a crushing victory over an older and larger Suffield Academy team, followed by a hard fought tie with an extremely skilled and aggressive Rumsey Hall varsity team.

The team had its ups and downs, but ended the season with a winning record. All players made significant contributions to the season and as is fifths tradition, all players came away from the season being in much better physical shape than many of their fellow students. Congratulations and thank you for a wonderful season full of fun and lessons for all.

Cross-Country

The Avon Old Farms Cross-Country Harriers had another outstanding season. With a record number of runners coming out for the team, the squad, consisting of mostly sophomores and freshmen, raced extremely well throughout the season.

During sports camp, the top returnees found themselves waking up early for their daily Navy SEAL workout in order to train not just the body but also the mind. Coach Bourgault led the daunting charge as the crafty veterans cheered the rookies on through the workout. Christmas came early for Avon, as the team picked up free agent Coach Tom Drescher, with his “Green Mountain” personality; he quickly became a source of inspiration for the runners. Every afternoon the team went on adventure runs: climbing mountains, crossing streams and leaping over logs, struggling through eight-mile marathon courses on foreign terrain, and even once, on a particularly hot day, trekking to everyone’s favorite Italian ice joint. When camp was over, the team was ready for their next big challenge: race day.

Throughout the season, it was apparent that the Avon harriers would have to overcome their relative inexperience in order to beat the veteran teams around the league. The training schedule was devised to improve the overall strength of each runner, and then to develop specific racing skills. To ensure success, the foundation of such a program had to be established through many lengthy endurance runs. The team would have been lost without the senior leadership of Captain Eddie Sumner. He established himself as the heart and soul of the team. However, it quickly became apparent that captain and rookie sensation Tully Hannan ‘09 would lead the pack

across the finish line as an extremely talented novice runner. Seasoned seniors Cam West, Steven Tucker, and Spencer Wilson knew the ropes and shared their experiences with the younger runners. Junior captain Mike Reilly took control of camp and modeled what a tenacious runner looks and acts like on a daily basis. Unfortunately, Avon’s Tyler Donahue ‘09, the top returnee from last season, was plagued by injury and forced to sit for most of the season. Sophomores Rob Konferowicz and Anthony Cusano were two top returnees fresh off the summer ice and ready to help score some points for the Beavers. Freshmen Nick Palen, Mike Reed, Matt Coz, and Anthony Springer made significant progress as they led the JV squad to a 5-5 record, foreshadowing the bright future of Avon’s cross-country program. John Haspilaire ’07, Martin Brooks ’07, JP Rotchford ’09 and Rob Patterson ’08 evolved into competitive runners who took great pride in their conditioning programs. Will Coz ’09 and Mark Lautensack ’08 drove home our team’s maxim - “In the room where lizards play saxophones”—by pushing themselves out of their comfort zones everyday and never complaining, always cheering on their teammates.

In many ways, the team had an extraordinary season and learned some powerful lessons along the way. They came to understand the meaning of commitment and courage, and the difference between pride and arrogance. The squad finished the season at the New England Championships in thrilling fashion, beating two very solid teams who had beaten them the week before and proving that the Winged Harriers subscribe fully to our school motto: Aspirando et Perseverando.

Founders League Champions New England Division 1 Prep School Champions

The Avon Old Farms varsity hockey team achieved all of their goals during the 2006-07 season, winning the Annual AOF Christmas Hockey Classic, the Founders League, and ascending to a record sixth New England Division I Prep School Championship. The team had a 22-4-2 record and proved to be one of the most exciting teams to watch with their dynamic speed and passing.

The season opened in an inauspicious manner with a 4-2 loss to South Kent. Avon had a 2-1 lead which evaporated late in the third period. The first win of the year came at Albany Academy; 10-0, behind Chris Wieland’s hat trick and Nick Bonino’s six points. At home, Taft squeaked out a 3-2 decision as goals from Pat Mullane and Chris Wieland were not enough, Pat Enloe spun a 6-0 shutout over Trinity-Pawling as six different skaters scored. A crucial 2-1 road win at Deerfield gave the team confidence heading into the Christmas Classic

behind Tom Atkinson’s goals and Randy Wolcott’s 42 saves.

The first round at the Avon Christmas Hockey Classic produced a 4-3 verdict over Berkshire behind Cam Atkinson’s two goals. Brady Kain and Randy Wolcott split the goal tending duties in the 7-2 win over Loomis. The Friday night tilt versus Tabor resulted in a 7-1 Avon win behind Bonino’s two goals. In the championship 5-2 win over Gunnery, Cam Atkinson’s two goals sparked the team and earned him the MVP trophy.

Returning from a two week break, Avon traveled to Taft and was frustrated by a 2-2 tie. On the road at Hotchkiss, the team earned an impressive 6-3 win over a previously undefeated team. A Nick Bonino hat trick led the way. At Kent, the Atkinson brothers notched two goals apiece in a 7-2 victory. John Higginbotham scored twice and Ken Trentowski had three points in a sloppy 7-5 win at Pomfret. Pat Enloe shut out NMH at home as once again Avon received balanced scoring from eight different skaters. A 6-2 win over Berkshire was punctuated by a five

goal first period outburst led by Bonino’s two goals. In a packed Jennings – Fairchild Rink, Avon turned back Westminster by a 3-1 score. A 5-1 win over Loomis followed with scoring from Cam Atkinson, Ryan Butler and Brad Peltz. A late third period goal by Nick Bonino led the team to a fast-paced 5-3 victory at Choate. The team’s winning streak was stopped at Westminster by a 4-3 score despite two goals from Brian Malchoff.

Returning from long winter weekend, the team whipped Gunnery 5-0 with Pat Enloe earning another shutout. A hard hitting 4-1 win over Deerfield was highlighted by goals from Brian Malchoff, Lee Moffie, Chris Wieland, and Tom Atkinson. The team next played Choate to a 2-2 tie. A frustrating 4-2 loss to Salisbury gave the team new resolve to tighten up defensively which they did in an 8-2 thrashing of Canterbury. In the regular season finale at Loomis, Randy Wolcott spun a shutout and Jon Gurry sniped a goal in the 5-0 win. With this win, the team clinched the Founders League Championship.

In the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, before an overflow crowd at Jennings-Fairchild Rink, Cam Atkinson scored twice and Pat Enloe was dazzling in a 3-0 win over Hotchkiss. The team journeyed to Salem, New Hampshire to face Noble and Greenough in a semifinal match-up. Erasing a 1-0 deficit in the second period with three goals, led by James Chamness, Nick Bonino, and Cam Atkinson, the team earned a 3-1 win. The following day, the team secured the school its sixth New England Championship before 2,500 fans—a textbook defensive effort with two goals from Nick Bonino and

one from Tom Atkinson paced Avon to a 3-0 triumph over Belmont Hill.

The outstanding leadership from the senior players and in particular, captains Brian Malchoff, Ken Trentowski, and

Nick Bonino, was responsible for the team’s success. They rose to the occasion and played championship hockey when it counted.

With the loss of many excellent senior players, next year’s team will have to work extremely hard to duplicate the 2006-07

team’s accomplishments.

This season was filled with many highs and fortunately, very few lows. The success of a team can be largely attrib-uted to those who make it up. One would be hard pressed to find a better group of guys than on this team. In times of adversity, they never gave up, and during practice they always had a fun, yet productive spirit.

Looking back on this season, two aspects define this team: first, the camaraderie that they shared, and second, the balance of the team. We had four lines that played fairly consistently throughout the season and when the final points are calculated, every single line contributed evenly to the point production as well as to the productiv-ity of the team.

There are two highlights that stand out from the season. They occurred on a weekend when we had two games, first against the NJ Kings, and second against a strong Salisbury team. On Friday night versus the Kings, we did not play our best game, but managed a tie and had some fun taking the game to a shootout. In the shootout, Dan Marro saved all three shots, and Nick Sica scored the game winning goal. The real exciting part of that weekend though, came the following evening when the team re-bounded and arguably played our best game of the season,

showing determination and resilience to beat Salisbury 4-3 in overtime.

As always, the team finished the season with a tourna-ment at Cushing Academy. Unfortunately, despite a strong effort, the VB team lost the first game to Cushing Acad-emy. Strong play was contributed by John Hodgkinson and Neil Krauter, who both improved tremendously through-out the course of the season. The following evening, on the back of Jordan Pritchett (4 goals) and Tim Clarke (2 goals and 2 assists), the Winged Beavers rebounded to beat Tabor Academy 9-1. In the words of Drew Leclerc “only 300 days left until the Bob Rust!”

Particular note this season goes to the Team’s three captains, Casey Coons, Devon Keough, and Ryan Ward. All three EARNED Coach’s Awards for their leadership, determination, and strong play. Seniors Andrew Aragona, Jeremy Grenier, Curtis Schneider, and Eddie Sumner will be missed.

The 2006-07 varsity B hockey players were a special group of guys who certainly embraced the philosophy “work hard, play hard.” They were one of the few groups who were able to find “the balance,” and for that, Coach Gammill and Nentwig are appreciative.

The 2006-07 junior varsity hockey team finished the season with a 10-6-2 record. This year’s team had no returning players from the year before. The beginning of the season was dedicated to coming together as a team. The first game was a convincing 3-0 victory over Canterbury, where Max Fenkell posted the shutout. That game was followed by a 3-2 win against a very physical Trinity-Pawling team where Doug Margison made numerous key saves. After losing the next two games, the team returned to their winning ways, beating Hotchkiss 3-2. Alternating wins and losses, the team found itself with a 5-5-1 record at the end of January. The next game was against rival Westminster and became the turning point of the season. After some bad bounces, the Winged Beavers were down 5-1 after two periods. Not giving up, the team scored two goals, but was still down 5-3 with a minute and a half left. Gaining an extra skater on the ice from the pulled goalie, Avon managed to find the back of the net—twice—co-captain Alex Riccio scoring with just seconds left to tie the score. Overtime went by without either team scoring and the game ended in a 5-5 tie. Then, in a well-played game, the team downed Eaglebrook 4-1. Next was a chippy battle with Deerfield, with the Winged Beavers coming out on top, 1-0. Jimmy Frageau, Paul Mimms, and co-captain Mark Joyce then led the offense in a 6-2 win over the Philly Little Flyers. Following a tough loss to Gunnery, the season ended on a short streak with wins over Westminster and Loomis Chaffee.

The Futures hockey team finished the year with a 7-10 record. While the record alone is not impressive, it should not overshadow the achievements that the team made over the course of the season. Strong leadership and improved defensive, offensive, and team play helped the Futures to a strong season of development.

The young Winged Beavers came out in the first game and showed a lot of promise with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win against the Springfield Pics. Joe Lisicki scored late in the overtime period to give the Futures their first win of the season, with Matt Labarge earning the win in net. Unfortunately, the momentum of the big win stopped, as the team went on to a five-game losing streak. It became clear that the team was going to have to work harder and more intensely to improve and get back in the winning column. The slump ended on January 12th with a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Kings. Brendan Helberg notched the ultimate game winner off of a pass from Ian Casella. On the next day, the team suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss against Hudson Valley. The tough and hardworking mentality that would fully characterize the team by the season’s end began to take shape during these two games. This identity was coupled with a style of play that called for simple and smart hockey. The team was led by Taft Havron, Dan Sandstrom, Ian Casella, Graham Garland, and J.P. Rotchford who all helped to set the tone of the team both on and off the ice.

The Winged Beavers’ next win came against the Minutemen Flames on January 14. Joe Lisicki was a standout in this game scoring four goals in the 6-0 victory. A three

game losing streak followed, including another thrilling yet heartbreaking overtime loss against Fairfield Country Day. The team rebounded to beat the Connecticut Clippers, Connecticut Lazers, and Springfield Pics. The 5-3 win versus the Connecticut Lazers serves as an example of the team’s progress and commitment to improvement; earlier in the year, the Winged Beavers suffered a 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Lazers. The 4-0 win against the Springfield Pics on February 17 again marked the team’s progress. Eric Meyers earned the team’s first and only shutout of the season in this contest. Joe Lisicky suffered a season ending ankle injury that; at first look, it would leave a hole in the Futures’ offensive production. Fortunately, Mike Devine stepped up and had a seven goal and nine-point explosion in the final three contests. The team’s progress was again displayed in the 9-1 win against the Cathedral JV, who Avon suffered a 2-0 loss against just one month earlier. Havron and Devine combined for the nine goals in this contest.

The final piece of the season was the awards ceremony. Three players were acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to the team. Ian Casella was recognized as the team’s most improved player. In addition, Taft Havron was recognized for his tireless and fearless work-ethic, as he took home the Hard-Hat Award for the team’s hardest working player. Graham Garland earned the Most Valuable Player distinction for his strong leadership and his offensive and defensive contributions.

As a whole, the year was filled with ups and downs, but the team improved greatly over the course of the season. Unfortunately, the year ended too quickly for the Futures, as the team was just beginning to play great hockey.

Thirds Hockey commenced the 2006-07 season on a high note by winning their first four games, which included victories over confer-ence rivals Trinity-Pawling, Berkshire, and South Kent. Unfortunately, the team could not keep their unbeaten streak alive as they suffered seven straight losses during the month of January. However, these losses were all close, competitive contests. Five of the nine losses were decided by a single goal. This demonstrated the team’s enduring effort and “no quit” attitude, especially when falling behind. Fortunately, Thirds Hockey concluded their season with two victories, including a nice win at Taft School. Despite being a team game, strong individual efforts from goalie Paul Foote and defenseman Alex Demopoulos proved valuable in the team’s success. All members of Thirds Hockey further developed their fundamental skills, in addition to learning the valuable lessons of teamwork and sportsmanship.

The varsity basketball team entered the 2006-07 season full of hope and excitement. The new field house at Avon had just opened in October and the basketball team was going to play its first season on Cole Court. The new facility is one of the finest prep school facilities in New England. Combine with that a core of five returning varsity players and ten promising newcomers and it is easy to understand the excitement that surrounded the team heading into the season. Unfortunately the team did not meet its overall goals and finished the year with a disappointing 10-12 record.

With ten new players on the team we knew that we were going to have to contend with some chemistry and cohesion issues early in the season. That process was only lengthened by the fact that throughout the season we had several players either injured or sick, causing them to miss several practices and games. As a result, the team did not gel as a complete unit until late in the year, which caused inconsistency. At times, we had flashes of brilliance, but we also cost ourselves some potential victories with our erratic play.

Our lack of consistency is clearly visible in the fact that our longest winning streak of the season was three games which came very late in the year. We also never lost more than three games in a row, and only did that once. There were, however, several exciting basketball games this year. Participating in the Hill School Tournament, the Winged Beavers were able to come from behind to beat St. Anne’s Belfield in dramatic fashion. We also had two very tight games with Trinity-Pawling, losing one in overtime and another with Trinity-Pawling scoring the go ahead basket with less than two seconds remaining. Sandwiched between the T-P games was a match against Williston Northampton, in which we put together a tremendous second half run and then hung on to win by two points. We then went to Kent and played well enough to come away with a win, only to see them come to Avon a week later and take the lead with only thirty-five seconds remaining in the game. Our buzzer-beater bounced off the rim, producing another tough loss. Then late in the season we had an excellent run of three games in three days, winning all of them and playing well as a team. That winning streak brought us back to a .500 record, but unfortunately we finished the season with two losses.

We say goodbye to seven players from this year’s team. Captain Dempsey Quinn missed twelve games due to injury, but returned and finished the season in strong fashion and was our third leading rebounder. Tom Bragg contributed a solid all-around game to the team and was the team leader in three-point shooting percentage, second leading rebounder, and third leading scorer. We will also miss the steady play of Jon Hasplilaire and Eoin Lennon, as well as the energy and contributions of Jim Eichas and two-year team members Patrick Miller and Matt Beath. We want to thank all of these

young men for their hard work and contributions to the Avon basketball program. We wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors.

Looking ahead to next season we do return eight players. Junior Joe D’Amelio (1st Team All Tri-State League) was this year’s leading scorer and our leader in steals, and sophomore Tim Brechbuehler (2nd Team All Tri-State League) was the team’s leading rebounder and shot blocker and finished second in scoring. Langley Young will serve as next year’s captain. Most Improved Award Co-Winners Blaise Driscoll and Ben Riley both return, and rounding out our returning squad are Leslie Spalding, Matt Doyle, and Chris Marx. We are very excited about our chance to have a more successful season next year with this group of returning players.

The JV basketball team finished with a record of 10-8, a slight improvement over the past two seasons. With a team of character players, the entire squad was able to contribute in some way or another and helped to build good chemistry. These athletes were a good group of guys and it was a plea-sure to coach them.

We had numerous highlights during the season. Avon had season sweeps of Berkshire and Kent, hard-fought splits with Trinity-Pawling and Salisbury, and a big victory over Canter-bury to finish the season. Down by one against Hotchkiss with less than three seconds remaining, Greg Miller threw a full-court pass to brother Pat on a set inbounds play. Pat beat the last defender from the corner but was fouled on his lay-up attempt. Alas, Pat missed the free throws, but rebounded well with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists in a victory over Canterbury. Another team highlight was early in the year against Suffield Academy. Our defense clamped down and gave up only 14 points for the entire game, only 6 points in the second half.

Offensively, our two big guns were two of our captains for the 06-07 season: Lester Primus and Tim Russell had many effective games, putting up big points. Lester Primus, running the point, never finished with fewer than 10 points. His average for the season was a robust 16.5 points per game, in addition to passing some of the finest assists during the year. There were also games where no matter the shot selection, Tim Russell’s shots were tickling the twine. Against a strong Hotchkiss team, Captain Russell went on a rampage, scoring 22 points from all angles, including his calm stroke at the free throw line.

Our third co-captain, Greg Miller, was a maniac under-neath the boards, vacuuming up any loose balls in sight. Particularly strong performances were his 10, 10, and 4 against Choate and his 6 points and 13 rebounds against Canterbury. Also strong on the boards throughout the season was Pat Wilson, who showed a deft touch around the basket as well as being a huge defender in the paint, altering many an opponent’s shot.

In addition to the play and leadership of this year’s captains, other players should be recognized for strong efforts – Norm Allen for his smooth baseline jumper, Kinley Mehra for fitting some strong passes into tight spaces in the paint, Jerome Wilkins and Kyle Lipkvich for their all-out hustle on the defensive end of the court and to Ben Beath, who by the end of the season became a more intelligent point guard, eliminating mistakes and turnovers from his game and driv-ing aggressively to the basket.

Thanks are in order for Coach Wilbur, who ably broke down our offensive and defensive sets, showing the players what they needed to do, and who always set a high standard at practice. His help this season allowed for the team to build more fundamentally sound players. It was a good season, and hopefully will allow a few of our players to help Coach Roller at the varsity level next year. With a strong returning group next winter and hopefully some help from the 3rds program, the JV basketball team will be able to continue to improve as players as well as in the win column.

The thirds basketball team had an outstanding season finishing with a 15-3 record. The team was comprised of some talented athletes and it was evident from the onset that the team needed to take advantage of their quickness and speed. The team also had a wealth of depth to fall back on which was helpful to keep pressure on opposing teams. The Winged Beavers started the season at 2-2, having lost to Canterbury and Deerfield by a total of five points. The chemistry of the team was still a work in prog-ress; after the first four games, however, the team started coming together and proceeded to win 13 of their last 14 games to end the season. This run included an impressive 41-20 victory over Canterbury to avenge the earlier loss.

The team was led in scoring by Trent Soares, who ran the offense from the point guard position. He was not shy when it came to the offensive end of the floor, throwing up shots from all over the court. He was also productive in running the offense and getting the ball to the open players. Mike Govoni was a nice addition to the team with his height and offensive skills. James Lee was also an im-portant part of the offense and was probably the hardest working player on the floor in practice and during games. He was nominated as the Most Improved Player for these reasons. Anthony Springer was also an important part of the team’s success. He might not have been the most natu-rally talented player on the team, but he worked hard and got the most out of his talent. That is why he was chosen as the team’s Most Valuable Player. John Driscoll and Colin Bradley were two of the most athletic players on the team and made valuable contributions at both ends of the floor. Connor O’Keefe was a huge presence underneath the basket and was strong on the boards. He picked up most of his points after getting offensive rebounds. His wide body was a dominating presence in the paint.

The balance of the team included hard working play-ers such as Seung Hwan Shim, Brendan Flanagan, Perry Wasserbauer, Tyler Donahue, Andrew Campbell, and Adrian L’Hostis. They played important roles in filling in when necessary and providing much needed depth to an already strong lineup.

The Avon riflery team had a very successful season, despite missing a bid into the Connecticut Shoot Off by only a few points to Suffield Academy. Our top scorer, Chet Helstowski ’07, always pulled through with some personal highs. Jesse Silverman ’08 and Scott Lee ’08 were elected to the Connecticut All State team, consist-ing of the top ten shooters in the state of Connecticut, picked by a selection committee. Grey Spencer ’09 fired a 193x200 in one of the matches, which was an all-time high score for him. Kiho Suh ’08 rounded out our most experienced shooters on the team. The future looks good for the Winged Beavers; seven members of the class of 2010 joined the team this season: Nick Fikre, Taeik Kim, Tae Wan Kwon, Will Rosichan, Alex Tynell, Aaron Zo-mojski, and Herbert (Jake) Hoss will all be back next year with experience under their belts. The team was highly motivated this year, especially since there were so many young shooters on the team. The team is looking for-ward to at least two or three great seasons in the future.

The ski team enjoyed a fine season this winter, accumu-lating a league record of 23-8. The season got off to a bit of a rocky start as Mother Nature did not cooperate. Despite record-high temperatures for much of January, the team pushed on and made the best of the difficult conditions.

With only 5 racers returning from last year’s team, our youth and inexperience showed during the regular season. However, as the team moved into the “Championship” portion of the schedule, they showed a lot of improvement and growth. At the BSL GS Championships, the team finished third out of ten teams, with Mike Haeflich ’07 finishing 1st overall. The following week, the team placed 6th out of 12 teams at the NEPSAC Class A Champion-ships. This was the first time Avon competed at this level and the team acquitted themselves quite well against an elite level of competition. Haeflich once again had a strong day, finishing 8th in GS and 11th in slalom (missing 10th by .02 seconds). Our final varsity race of the year was the BSL Slalom Championships. Going into the race the team trailed Berkshire by 50 points and Salisbury by 4. Through some fine ski racing, we made up these deficits in spades, defeating both of those teams by a healthy mar-gin. Individually, Tanner Cunningham ’10 placed fourth, Preston Carbone ’07 finished eighth, while Jae Woo Lim ’08 turned in the best performance of his career, finishing 13th. Unfortunately, our efforts were not enough to defeat a talented and deep team from Suffield. Nevertheless, the 2nd place finish in the Berkshire Ski League was one of the best in school history.

The team will say goodbye to two varsity racers this

year. Senior co-captains Mike Haeflich and Preston Carbone each skied for the varsity team for four seasons. Haeflich had an outstanding career that included indi-vidual wins in several races and recognition as an All-New England ski racer each year he was on the team. Carbone played a very important role in the team’s success through the years, consistently finishing races with strong times. During their time in the program, the team amassed a record of 86-23, putting them among the best classes in the history of the Avon Old Farms ski team. Their leadership and presence will be greatly missed.

The team returns a series of strong varsity racers next year. This group will be led by juniors Jae Woo Lim, Brandon Moore, and Dan Witkiewicz. Each of these boys has been on the team the past three seasons and has gar-nered some varsity experience. Sophomore Patrick Birch and freshmen Riggs Brackett, Declan Reed, and Tanner Cunningham had impressive seasons and much will be expected of them next year. Each boy competed in several varsity races this year. In addition, JV Racers Dan Loveland ’09, Patrick Hampton ’10, and Connor Brackett ’10 will look to compete for varsity spots next winter. In short, the team has had a fine season and the prospects for the future of the program are bright.

The 2006-07 season welcomed many new faces to the varsity squash program at Avon. The five players to join the team were Robert Patterson ’08, Tyler Schultz ’07, Zachary Green ’07, Parker Bova ’10, and John Connolly ’08. Re-turnees Craig Kubasek ’07, Spencer Bova ’08, and captain Grant Palermo ’07 took on the task of introducing the new players to the complexity of the game. This was clearly go-ing to be a “rebuilding” season and the team’s goals were to work daily to improve its skills and to learn the fundamen-tals of squash. Although the team finished the season with a record of 4-12 and finished 11th in the New England Class “B” Tournament, this does not reflect the effort each player put into the season and the improvements that they have accomplished.

This year’s Most Improved Player award goes to Tyler Schultz ’07. Tyler’s “never say die” attitude on the courts allowed him to get to shots most players would not even consider. His relentless plays also paid off during the New England Tournament were he defeated some of the oppo-nents he had lost to during the season. Craig Kubasic ’07 was the recipient of this year’s Most Valuable Player Award. Craig has been a two-year member of the varsity squash team. This season he faced the best players in New England and always had respectable finishes. Thank you to Craig and all the seniors for all their hard work; the class of 2007 will be missed next year on the courts.

The AOF JV squash team had a tremendous year. In the previous season the team had all away games and practices, creating a long and difficult season. This year we opened up our new gorgeous squash pavilion. Now that we have the nicest courts in the league, the team this year more than dou-bled in size from the previous season with interest growing among the students, and the players fought hard and played well to defend our new home turf. They boasted more wins this season than the cumulative wins in the past two seasons and some individual players won more than their fair share of individual matches, including Ford St. John and team MVP Jared Cijek.

All players made significant contributions to the season and significant progress towards becoming better players. I am immensely pleased with the season and each member of the team. Congratulations on a wonderful season full of fun and lessons for all.

The Avon Old Farms varsity swimming team dedicated themselves to a grueling travel routine, ten hours in the pool, and tough practices this year. Faced with a relatively small and inexperienced team to guide, captains Zack Barker and Chris Canning led the team by example. By maintaining encouraging attitudes, determined spirits, and high goals for themselves, Zack and Chris inspired other members of the team to achieve their best. It was with their leadership that the team’s positive character and sense of achievement developed.

Although the season ended in a losing record of 2-10, there was a high sense of achievement for all members of the team through out the year. In the first meets versus Hopkins and a large Kingswood-Oxford team, Avon proved to be a team worth reckoning but were alas over-powered and outnumbered.

Avon was then swept away by the dominating force of Choate, however rallied together to defeat Iona Prep in the first win of the season. Feeling positive from their win against a tough team, Avon put together their best efforts for dual meets against Loomis Chaffe, Northfield Mount Hermon, and Suffield Academy, but did not have the depth to be victorious. Then, in a thrilling meet at Canter-bury School, Avon secured the win in the final relay.

At the Western New England Championship meet, Pete Longo, Zack Barker, Adam Kassel, Nick Brogan, and Mike Mangan showed some amazing swims, and Chris Canning placed 2nd and 3rd in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. The team pulled away from competitors to earn a 4th place finish, and seemed relaxed and excited as they looked forward to New England Championships at Deerfield the next weekend.

The swimming began early Saturday morning with only a brief hiatus from the deafening crowd and strong energy of the pool between prelims and finals. In prelims, fresh-men Comie Stallmeyer and Alex Levy showed that they liked stiff competition; each posted at least one season-best time. Adam Kassel dropped time again in his 500, 200, and 100 yard swims, while Tully Hannan stepped up to the plate in his 500 and earned a season best time in his 100-yard breast stroke. Mike Mangan and Zack Barker were both powerful in the 200-yard individual medleys and 100-yard backstrokes, each also earning season best times in at least one personal event. Chris Canning iced his senior year with his highest placements ever at New England Championships: 3rd place in the 50-yard freestyle and 7th place in the 100-yard freestyle. The 400-yard relay team comprised of Zack Barker, Evan Piercey, Adam Kassel, and Chris Canning topped off the night with a season best time and 14th place finish.

The team next year will welcome the return of the majority of the players and should prove to be much more experienced. Next year’s senior leaders Evan Piercey and Adam Kassel will each return to the sport with more experience, talent, and determination. The team also bids farewell to two of the most talented members of the team: captains Zack Barker and Chris Canning. Each devoted four years to the sport, and both have had tremendous suc-cesses. With humble hearts and a deep passion invested in the team, they led the team this year and it is with a heavy heart that the team bids them farewell. You will both be deeply missed next year.

I would lastly like to acknowledge the dedication from Coach Tom Drescher. He was the driver to almost every meet and practice, and he wrote many superb write-ups following competitions. He was a great first-year coach! May the team next year have such humor, energy, spirit, and heart!

Winter Sports

This season was filled with enthusiasm, commitment, and hard work. This year’s wrestling room stabilized with 40 dedicated wrestlers, after starting the season with 52 athletes. Injuries and a change of heart reduced the numbers, but not the drive and intensity of those remaining. Our varsity season was a success mainly because we had all weight classes filled with depth, and although we are graduating several starters this year, we will once again have a very strong squad returning next year.

First-year wrestler Ricky Regalado proved himself to be a tough competitor all season at 103 lbs. His teammates nicknamed him “Spiderman” because of his excellent use of his legs. We are looking forward to his return. Andrew Coco was a dynamo at 112 lbs. In his second year, he really began to understand the sport and became a strong and instinctive wrestler. All eyes are on him next year. Jake Bourgault, at 119 lbs., likewise “turned the corner” in his second year on the team. On two back-to-back occasions, Jake’s success in his individual matches secured victories for the Avon squad (against Salisbury and Choate). If he continues on his current trajectory, he will certainly be a force to be reckoned with in this league. Matt Murray remained dominant at 125 lbs. His skill and tenacity certainly motivate his teammates and strike fear (or at least trepidation) in his opponents. Matt was overwhelmingly elected by his teammates to lead the team as captain in the 2007-08 season. Co-captain “Silent” Phil Cassidy had a great year as well and finished his high school wrestling career on a very strong note. Like Murray, Phil dominated his field at 130 lbs. His quiet, yet effective leadership will be missed next year. Kaz Nakamura, also in his second year, was a solid wrestler at 135 lbs. and will be one of the cornerstones of next year’s squad. His head and arm throw has already become legendary throughout the league. Chris Stanton was a powerhouse this year at 140 lbs. and we are pleased to see him as a returner next year.

We began the year with co-captain Aaron Gittleman manning 145 lbs., but early in the season, Aaron was sidelined with a season-ending operation in his abdomen. The day after his surgery, Aaron drove himself to one of our early quad meets and provided encouragement and leadership from the coaches’ corner. Aaron also made it to all the morning weigh-ins, even though he was not competing. A true sign of dedication to the team! Courageously, Ben Chodar stepped up from the JV squad to fill the vacancy left by Aaron’s sudden and unexpected departure and had a winning season while gaining much valuable varsity experience.

Sean Douville began the season at 152 lbs., but he too suffered a season-ending injury. He was replaced by sophomore “Mad” Max Kipnis, who faced some of the toughest competitors the league had to throw at him, and finished in fine style. Carlos “Mang” Sosa competed well at 160 lbs. and completed his high school wrestling career in fine style after only competing for two years. His strength and tenacity will be missed next year, yet long remembered. Senior Tyler Bambrick performed well at 171 lbs., especially when considering he was a first year wrestler. Always tough, always giving 100%, he was a pleasure to have on the team and set a great example for his teammates. We all wish him the best in his years at West Point and beyond. Co-captain Roy Hubbard was one of the mainstays of the varsity lineup

at 189 lbs. Spending three of his last four years on the squad, Roy has become an accomplished wrestler and an outstanding leader. His legacy has been firmly established within this wrestling program. Chris Hartmann had a great season and was a consistent contributor to the team’s success at 215 lbs. His energy, enthusiasm and leadership will be missed. Sears Tiernan rounded out the varsity line-up, and well represented Avon at 285 lbs. He had over 20 wins this season, finished in 2nd place at our league tournament, wrestled well at the national Tournament, and took home some hardware at the New Englands. He has also been unanimously elected to lead the team next year as captain along side Matt Murray. With too many fine men to mention, the JV program is progressing nicely and we will be drawing heavily from this year’s lineup to fill several vacancies in next year’s varsity squad. Matt Coz, Timmy Longo, Mike Sur, and Isaiah Farrow are showing particular promise, and we are looking forward to their return.

Special thanks are offered to Coach John Benoit who once again provided his many years of extensive expertise to this program. The entire team is also grateful to all the parents, friends, and students who supported this growing program over the course of our season.

VARSITY BASEBALL

The 2007 varsity baseball team was a competitive and talented group that enjoyed a successful season. With two games remaining, the team’s record stands at 14-4.

The team was led by an outstanding pitching staff. Dan Corrigan took on many of the team’s toughest opponents and pitched well each time he took the mound. He earned impressive wins against Loomis, Trinity-Pawling, Hotch-kiss, and Taft. Corrigan was followed in the rotation by Nick Wolfe, who was outstanding all season long, especial-ly in the early going when he won his first four decisions for the Winged Beavers. Corrigan and Wolfe were backed up by a deep staff that included Alex Beir, Tim Brechbue-hler, Blaise Driscoll, Shane Caffrey, and Mike Rubin. Beir earned a win against Loomis, Brechbuehler against Cho-ate, Driscoll against Trinity-Pawling, and Caffrey against Deerfield. Pitching talent and depth was a strong point of

the year’s team and was pivotal in their success. Avon’s infield was led by captains Dempsey Quinn

and Patrick Miller. Both provided outstanding leader-ship, defensive talent, and offensive punch. The captains were supported by veterans Adam Zabel and Tim Clark. Newcomers Drake Deluga (team leader in home runs), Pat Miller, Paul Severni, and Scott Kelleher rounded out a very gifted and deep infield group. This unit was talented, versatile, and enthusiastic.

The outfield was unquestionably led by the team’s Most Valuable Player, George Springer. Springer was an excellent defender, covering a lot of ground in centerfield, and possessing an excellent throwing arm. He also led the team in many offensive categories, including hits, batting average, and runs scored. Ryan Ward, Mike Rubin, and Greg Miller shared the majority of the time at the “corner”

spots and played effective defense, while producing solid results at the plate. Matt Giamalis, Shane Caffery, and Tom Mapes saw time in the outfield as well. Mapes was the team’s starting designated hitter, and was an outstanding offensive force, providing substantial production in the middle of the order.

The catching duties were shared by the trio of Tyler Bambrick, Sam Hebb, and sophomore Cael Brockmeyer. Bambrick and Hebb saw the majority of the action and were effective offensive players. In addition, this group provided strong leadership and direction for the Avon defense.

In the final analysis, the 2007 team was a fun group that possessed talent and enthusiasm for the game. The players worked hard, played together, and remained posi-tive and supportive throughout the season. The program sincerely thanks the seniors for their steadfast effort and commitment to the game. The program looks forward to charging after the league title in 2008 with a strong group of returning players and upcoming talent.

In its inaugural season, the Varsity B Baseball is off to decent start. While the team’s record may not show this (1-5 as of this writing, with two to play), the boys have played hard and have lost some tough games.

Our season opened on a frigid afternoon versus the Farmington HS JV. Sam Hoffman was on the hill and pitched 5 innings of 2-run ball. Despite a driving snow storm hampering each team’s ability to see the ball, this was a tightly played affair with strong defense and pitching on both sides. Evan Piercey was the offensive hero of the day with a 2-3 performance and 2 RBIs.

After a three-week weather-imposed hiatus, the team journeyed to Windsor to take on the Loomis Chaffee Pelicans. Avon jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the strength of a Joe Wrotniak 2 RBI double and Evan Piercey’s 2-run homer. Piercey and Wrotniak would strike again in the third. Wrotniak hit an RBI double while Piercey stroked his second home run of the game, a monster shot to center. Piercey would add one more RBI in the 5th bring-ing his total for the day to 5. On the hill, Andrew Somen pitched 5 strong innings for the win and Sam Hoffman pitched the final two (4 K’s) for the save.

After losing to the Forman varsity 7-1, the team returned home for a rematch with the Farmington HS JV. Once again this was a tight game. While the weather con-

ditions were significantly better and the offensive produc-tion was improved, we fell once again in the last inning, losing 6-5.

We then had two tough games against intra-city rival Avon HS. Playing twice in three days we lost 15-8 and 7-5 to a very good offensive and defensive team. With two games remaining, the spirit of the team remains strong as we look conclude the first season of Varsity B Baseball at Avon on a positive note.

The junior varsity baseball squad posted another 12-win season, compiling a 12-2 record with one game left to play at the time of this summary. The team racked up victories behind a consistently strong offense (averaging near 10 runs a game) and solid pitching (allowing near five runs a game). Poor defense contributed to the two losses, but game in and game out, Avon tossed around the leather in impressive fashion.

Avon’s formidable offensive attack was relentless with a line-up featuring 10 capable batsmen (we use an extra-hitter at the junior varsity level). The team scored over 10 runs a game in each of the first five games of the year against some tough opponents like Worcester Academy, Taft, Loomis Chaffee, and Salisbury. Typically, Trent Soares and Michael Scali set the table and wreaked havoc on the base paths, stealing their way into scoring position for sluggers Tim Kiene, Pat Mul-lane, John Salamone, and Kinley Mehra. John Salamone’s two-homer, 4-for-5 effort at Taft could be considered one of the more memorable single-game offensive performances during the season. This year’s line-up, however, did not get any easier for opposing pitchers to deal with after the first six hitters. Lester Primus produced throughout the year from the second half of the batting order, as did Whit Berry, Norm Allen, Anthony Cusano, Torrey Proctor, and Joe Agliato. Andres Ventura and Graham Garland swung hot bats in the second half of the season, recording multi-hit games down the stretch.

New to the team, Graham Garland anchored the pitching staff, notching five wins on the season. Garland’s repertoire consisted of a number of breaking pitches to compliment an imposing fastball, and in a word, Garland was downright dominant throughout the year. In his first outing against Suffield Academy, he struck out the first seven batters he faced. Trent Soares was the left-handed ace of the staff, always competing and patrolling the middle of the diamond with as much tenacity and range as he did center field when he was not pitching. Torrey Proctor, a hard-throwing right-hander, started a couple of games but was most effective out of the bullpen, particularly early on in the season against Worcester Academy when he inherited a bases-loaded situation late in the game and battled out to help preserve a 10-5 victory. Les-ter Primus, Norm Allen, and Anthony Cusano also toed the rubber during the season to help secure Avon wins.

Defensively, the 2007 squad had “web-gem” ability. The shortstop-second baseman tandem of Michael Scali and Pat Mullane spun numerous double plays during the season, including three against Taft. Norm Allen displayed one of the strongest arms in the league from third base, and Tim Kiene and Whit Berry split time at first base, providing big targets and sure hands for the infielders. Andres Ventura and Torrey Proctor saw time on the hot corner, bolstering the defense in the late innings. Behind the plate, John Salamone and Joe Agliato captained the infielders. A team is fortunate to have one talented catcher, never mind two like Salamone and

Agliato. In the outfield, Anthony Cusano, Lester Primus, Mike Govoni, Will Coz, and Kinley Mehra shared time in left and right field. Primus and Mehra also served ably in center when Trent Soares was on the mound; however, Soares deserves to be singled out for his defensive efforts. Soares played an incredible center field all season, but his best game came at Hotchkiss as he ran down a couple of deep flies that looked as though they were sure extra-base

hits. Extra bases for Hotchkiss in that game could have made a difference as Avon worked to hold on and ulti-mately preserve the 9-4 lead.

The 2007 junior varsity baseball team possessed a great deal of talent, but perhaps their best attribute was their passion for the game and their willingness to work as a team to play the best baseball that they could.

This year’s thirds baseball team has traveled a long and winding road. There have been some spectacular moments, such as our come-from-behind win against Eaglebrook, as well as some less enjoyable times, but nevertheless, the team persevered and will finish the 2006-07 season with pride.

Several freshmen made big impacts on this team and suggest that the future of Avon baseball is bright. Notably, the keystone combo of Greg Giamalis and Matthew Coz was one of the strongest middle infields in the history of the program. Both of these players were adept at other positions as well, with Coz also catching and pitching and Giamalis, a wonderful hitter, playing short, second, or third with equal dexterity. Craig Tepper proved himself to be an outstanding first baseman and a great hitter. Tep delivered a lot of timely hits throughout the season and saved a more than a few outs with great glove work. At third base, frosh Conor McDonnell did a fine job defensively and turned into a great line drive hitter.

We also had some big help from Benny Williams, one of the most dedicated players on the team (both before and after his broken nose); Jake Hoss, who bravely played catcher as well as outfield and EH; Kevin Lin, Mr. Hustle, the guy who would do anything to help the team, and Aaron Zamojski, who learned the game for the first time on this team. Casey O’Brien appeared in a variety of positions, including first, pitcher, outfield, and EH, contributing at each, and Ryan Randall, the fireballing freshman, pitched very well in several outings this year in addition to time at second and third. Jonas Nissley, Ricky Regalado, and Alex Tynell all had their seasons shortened by injuries, but each contributed in his own way before

moving to the Disabled List.The Captains of this team were three outstanding ball

players and outstanding young men. Ryan Endorf, Mr. Thirds, was lights out repeatedly on the mound. He proved himself to be a tremendously devoted and loyal member of the team. Our catcher, Brendan Flanagan, took more abuse than ought to be legal. In addition to the standard beating every catcher endures, Brendan also led the team in being hit by pitches—what a teammate! Ian Groezinger, the ideal number 3 hitter, again played brilliant centerfield, pitched well in starts and relief appearances, and led the team on and off the field. It was wonderful to have such great guys on the team.

Other sophomores included Sam Kimmerle, a leader and fine outfielder; Ian Lapin, solid in center and a much-improved hitter over last year; Jesse “Spoons” Silverman, a very hardworking ballplayer; and Geoff Lindblad, new to school this year and eager to make an impression. Two of our top sophomore additions this year were certainly Alex Phucas and Max Kipnis. Alex started a couple of rallies on his own with timely hitting and great base running, and Max could hit, pitch, and play the infield with great skill. Graham Speace, not a ballplayer by instinct, but one of the hardest working boys on the team, was a spot starter and good asset for the team. Jake Kapneck, Connor Zieky, and Michael Galper also appeared in games.

This was a team with lots of character and lots of characters. Yet through it all, those boys who wanted to make the most of it did so. I am very proud of the guys who stuck to business and became better ballplayers. Coach Last was an extraordinary addition to this team, and we were lucky to have him.

Varsity Lacrosse, continued

The 2007 varsity lacrosse team continued to have another highly competitive spring as they posted an exciting season under Coach Garber and Coach Gammill, and they once again maintained an effort to be able to compete as one of the top teams in Western New England and in the Founders League. Coach Garber and four assistant coaches traveled to Orlando, Florida, with 42 players to a pre-season training camp at Disney World for five days over spring break. While in Florida, the team had a great deal of success while under-taking a rigorous training schedule, which included tactical drill work as well as scrimmages against secondary school teams from various parts of the country.

Upon returning from their noteworthy trip, the Men of Avon started off their season with a big win over a veteran team of PGs from Northfield, 9-8. This win spearheaded the team’s winning momentum as they won the next three games over Phillips-Exeter, Tabor, and Minnechaug HS by averaging ten goals per game, while holding each tough opponent to less than 5 goals. There was little time to celebrate however, as the upcoming opponent was vs. a much improved Choate squad on enemy turf. In a battle of defenses, Choate came out on top, 6-3. But, in Winger Beaver fashion, Avon rebounded from their disappointing loss by upsetting a fired-up Westmin-ster team on Westy’s home field, 7-6. This important win gave Avon continued team confidence as they traveled away and beat a very feisty Kent team 12-7. and then the Men of Avon returned home and upset a very talented Brunswick team in a game that could have gone either way, 5-4.

With no rest for the weary, an undefeated and always tough Hotchkiss team traveled to Avon in hopes of avenging the 2 losses that Avon had pinned on them the 2 previous years. That game was played on a beautiful sunny day and the fans got their moneys’ worth as both teams battled through 2 sudden-death overtimes before the visiting Hotchkiss team scored the game winner in transition. Once again, the Men of Avon showed their true character as they responded with a huge, 19-11 dominating win over a highly touted Trinity-Pawl-ing squad.

The high flying momentum continued to be unleashed both offensively and defensively against an overwhelmed Canterbury team, 19-1. However, next up was arch-rival, #1 ranked and undefeated Deerfield at Deerfield on their Parents Weekend. Avon lost the game by 6 goals, but the only frustration that was felt from the tough loss was due to unforced errors that Avon committed, enabling Deerfield to build up a winning margin. The next game was against an always competitive and skilled Taft team away. What started out as a beautiful sunny day turned into a day filled with tor-rential rain. However, Avon won its 10th game of the season for the second year in a row with a 12-4 victory. This followed by a dramatic, hard-fought win at home versus perennial rival Salisbury on Avon’s Alumni Weekend, 6-5. This win was especially sweet, as it marked the final home match in each

senior Winged Beaver’s career at Avon. The final match of the season occurs at Loomis. The Beavers look forward to the tough challenge that lies ahead as they continue to strive to be one of the top Division 1 lacrosse teams in New England.

All season long, the team has been well represented by a strong core of upper classmen, led by captains Ryan Liebel and Aaron Gittleman. Also finishing up a commendable career as a multi- year varsity player on attack is Grant Palermo and first year senior, Matt Carpenter. The midfield units were spearheaded by first year seniors Tom Bragg and Marty Brooks along with veteran Casey Coons (CCP specialist). A veteran defensive squad did a tremendous job this past season, led by the starting goalkeepers Brian Malchoff and Ben Libby (“Cyclops specialist”). Avon will miss the veteran leadership of their long poles led by, Matt Beath, Nick Bonino, AJ Hermandorfer, Mickey Shaw, and Will Sieber, along with Chris Hartmann and Tyler Schultz. Once again, assistant coach Corey Gammill did a terrific job running the offense and directing the substitution box all season long. A special thanks to Jim Eichas and Ryan Butler for their outstanding job as the team’s managers and scorekeepers.

The 2007 varsity B lacrosse team had an extremely successful season, ultimately finishing up with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses. The onset of the season was initially slowed by Mother Nature, as a spring snowfall resulted in the postponement of our first contest. By Saturday April 7th, the boys were hungry for some competition. The Pomfret school was the first victim of the train that was the 2007 varsity “B” lacrosse team. Led by senior goaltender and captain Mi-chael Recchia (who posted his first ever career shutout), the Beavers steamrolled Pomfret. However, they didn’t stop there. The Pomfret win was followed by a string of six more victories, each seemingly more impressive than the last. With Recchia between the pipes, the close defense was anchored by Chris Canning, Roy Hubbard, and co-captain Kevin Sisti. The speedy James Chamness and the quickly improving “Irish Assassin,” Eóin Lennon, rose to the occasion as defensive stalwarts from the midfield.

Offensively, the VB laxers were led by attackers Ryan Petersen,

Craig Kubasek, and the “assist man” himself, Mr. Armand Wilson. Avon also boasted the most potent “sixth man” in the league, as Ted “The Magician” Wallace would come off the bench and provide us with some much needed offensive swagger. The offensive midfielders were led by trio of Devin Keogh, Patrick Enloe, and Brady Kain, and the ever flavorful triumvirate of Rick Longobardi, Nick Carter, and Kenny “The Spark Plug” Trentowski.

The highlights of the winning streak were two back to back, come from behind overtime victories in the hostile environments of both the Hyde School and Cheshire Academy. These wins will forever be remembered by both the players and those fans who were lucky enough to attend. The only 2 losses came late in the season, as the Beavers came up just shy in two hard-fought battles with Loomis and Salisbury. The legacy of this team, however, had already been established, and the 2007 varsity B lacrosse season will certainly go down as one to remember.

The junior varsity lacrosse team compiled an impressive record of nine wins and three losses this spring with one game remaining. Led by tri-captains JP Rotchford, Chris Ruhlig, and Ben Beath, the team outscored their opponents by a mar-gin of ninety goals to our opponents thirty-four. We averaged just under eight goals a game and gave up an average of under three goals a game.

With only four returning players from the previous year, it was a challenge to come together as a team and execute the systems that are fundamental to successful lacrosse. Many of the players demonstrated a considerable amount of growth, and perhaps this was most true of our freshman midfielders Matt LaBarge, Jeff Hodgkinson, Paul Mimms, and Michael Mckeon. Their improvement in all aspects of the game added depth to our roster as we got deep into the season. Max Fenkel developed nicely in his role as a face-off specialist, and Perry Wasserbauer improved dramatically in his ability to handle the ball and serve as a short-stick mandown defender.

Our defense was anchored by freshman goaltender Mike

Lee who earned the majority of the playing time in games through his consistent hard-work in practices and games. Goaltenders Ward Waesche and Chandler Webb also contrib-uted significantly to our success, most notably in our games against Choate, Deerfield, and Canterbury. Longstick mid-field defender Ian Casella was nothing short of a warrior at his position, and close defenders JP Rotchford, Bobby Wiles, Eric Meyers, Richard Colletti, and Connor O’Keefe shared time in the close defense. Freshman Joe Lisicky, coming off of a serious injury incurred this winter, earned a starting position in the close defense by the final stretch of the season, demonstrating some exceptional ability at that position.

Our offense was led by the goal-scoring attack combina-tion of Craig Cottrell, Chris Ruhlig, Mike Devine, and Ben Beath. Alex Riccio, Mark Joyce, and David Bauchiero also contributed significantly to our offensive totals. Together, the group served as our extra-man-offense unit throughout the season. Attackmen Conor Cummings and Joe Ramieri each had several points over the course of the season as well.

Our most memorable game of the season was the thrilling “impossible dream,” a come-from-behind victory over a capable and confident Trinity-Pawling team. After what had been a somewhat frustrating day for players and coaches alike, we came together in the final minutes of that game to execute our offense in stellar fashion. In less than a three minute span, we came back from a 6-3 deficit to force the game into overtime,

scoring with only two seconds remaining on the clock. In over-time, despite being down a man due to a penalty, freshman Joe Lisicky scooped up a loose ball, charged over the midfield line, and dished the ball to attackman Mike Devine. Mike walked in alone and buried a high shot under the crossbar to win the game. That was a moment that none of us will forget for a long time to come.

Spring Sports

The thirds lacrosse team had a difficult season this year. Led by their three captains, returning player Pat Hampton and first year players Bubba Sanstrom and Lincoln Young, they started on a good step winning the first two games of the season but then met some tough competition that we were unable to beat. The defense, led by returning player Nick Tsacoyeanes and goalies Brendan Helberg and Lincoln Young stood strong, allowed more than 6 goals in only a handful of games. Despite a young defensive line, all defensemen played well, learning their positions and how to strip an attackman of the ball quickly. Our greatest obstacle to overcome was our inability to find the net on offense. Unlike many young offenses, Avon was willing to hold on to the ball and pass it around instead of taking chances and trying to make runs to the goal. By mid-way through the season the midfielders and attackmen started to understand how to beat a defense and began to compli-ment the hard work done by the long poles by scoring often. Johan Frankenberger led the team with 11 goals and Will Rosichan, Mark Clarke, and Pat Birch were all close behind in points.

Overall, the season was an excellent season. All the players rallied after the initial losses to become a tough, cohesive unit. By the end of the season there was hardly a ground ball that was lost or a clear by an opposing team that was allowed down the field. The growth by each and every member of this team is extraordinary and they should all be proud that they went from a 2-6 team to the potential of having a winning season.

The varsity golf team had an awe-inspiring 2007 campaign, posting a regular season record of 17 wins and 4 losses. In tournament play, Avon finished second in the 2007 Coppola Cup. Finding themselves behind by twelve strokes in the first week, the team rallied during week two. Unfortunately, Avon finished just three strokes shy of de-feating a strong Kingswood team. Finally, with the Found-ers League Championship and the Kingswood Invitational Tournament to be determined in the later part of May, the Winged Beavers have already made this an extremely successful season.

Co-Captains Spencer Bova and Nick Sica were the backbone of the 2007 squad. In addition to playing consis-tent golf throughout the spring, both were able to finish a match as medalist (lowest score). Rounding off the varsity ladder were Kurt Goetjen, Jon Gurry, Peter Seltenright, and Parker Bova, who all made notable contributions at different times throughout the season. Freshman Parker Bova even posted a few medalist scores near the end of the season.

For the second year running, Spencer Bova earned the Tom and Dottie Prunell Most Valuable Player Golf Award. After earning a varsity letter in his freshman year, Spencer has continued to develop as a golfer. In 2006 Spencer impressed the league by winning medalist honors in the KIT. This season Spencer has continued his solid play and finished the year with the lowest 9-hole stroke average (37.7) on the team.

Peter Seltenright proved to be the team’s 2007 Most Improved Player. Peter narrowly missed making the Avon golf team during the 2006 season. Most juniors would be discouraged by this, but Peter was not. Instead, Peter concentrated on his game in the off-season and became one of the foundational players on this year’s team. Peter’s level-headed playing style often gave him the upper hand in matches.

Varsity golf will miss its senior class next season. Kurt Goetjen, Jon Gurry, and Peter Seltenright have been very consistent this year and leave big shoes for members of the AOF JV squad to fill. Congratulations and best of luck in college next year!

The 2007 junior varsity golf team remained competitive throughout the entire spring season. A winning record, which included seven victories over Founders League rivals Salisbury, Loomis Chaffee, Hotchkiss, Choate, and Canterbury, was the result of a full team effort. First year players Marcel Levesque, Tyler Donahue, Rob Konferowicz, Jordan Lynch, and Alex Levy contributed to the success of the team as much as veterans Dan Jandreau and Tyler Creed. In addition to a strong team effort demonstrated in each match, all members of JV golf improved their fundamental skills, while also learning lessons in course management. In addition, these men proved to be true gentlemen who per-fected proper etiquette each time they took to the links. Although the team is sad to be losing senior Tyler Creed, Avon’s JV golf team should remain competitive as it has a strong foundation made up of a talented group of underclassmen. Hopefully all members of the team will continue to improve their game and strengthen their swings over the summer, which will help ensure future success whether at the varsity or junior varsity level.

The Varsity tennis team had its work cut out with a young squad and little match experience entering the season. The starting lineup consisted of four sophomores and two juniors with most of the players playing tennis pre-dominantly only during the season. The team put forth a good effort despite the lack of experience and demonstrat-ed a marked improvement over the course of the season.

The team started the season with a spring break trip to Sarasota, Florida, which was a great bonding experi-ence for all of those in attendance. During the season, the team was led by captains Dan Marro and Peter Cruice. Sophomore Peter Cruice played the number one position in singles and was matched up against some pretty stiff competition. He managed to hold his own against these top-level players and even come out on top on a number of occasions. Peter was followed in the lineup by Juan Serra, Erik Biggart, and Ethan Broatch. The three players had extremely challenging competition having to play some of the top teams in New England, including Taft, Hotchkiss, Salisbury, and Kent, all four of whom played in the year-ending New England Championships. The balance of the

team varied from match to match and included the likes of Doug Margison, Brahm Wachter, Domingo Diaz de la Guardia, Ford St. John and Tom Gutierrez. It certainly was a rebuilding year for the tennis squad but the experience gained by these young players will hopefully be invaluable for the upcoming years.

The 2007 junior varsity tennis team had a success-ful season, greatly improving from the year before. In 2006, JV tennis won 3 matches. With one match still to play at the time of writing, the 2007 squad had already compiled 6 victories. A solid mix of returning and new players strengthened the team, making JV Winged Beavers a formidable opponent. Returning from last year’s team were senior captain Cam West, senior Eric Stacey, junior Ben Chodar, and sophomores Jake Bourgault and Dong Young Cha. New to the team this year were junior Adrian L’Hostis, sophomores Chris Brown, Jared Ciejek, Emil Davis, and Nick Fikre, and freshman Jack Isom.

The season got off to a slow start, as Avon suf-fered two lopsided defeats, 7-0 against Eaglebrook and 6-1 against Kent. The coaches did have some optimism after the Kent match, as several of the matches in that contest were very close. Avon finally got into the win column in its next match, blanking Canterbury 7-0. A 5-2 win over Berk-shire and a 7-0 romp over Cheshire Academy followed, and Avon found itself with a winning record at 3-2.

From then on, the Beavers followed a pattern of alternating wins and losses. The three game win streak was halted by Salisbury, who snuck past the Winged Beavers 4-3. A 6-1 win over Kingswood followed. In its next match, the team faced a very good Taft team and were blanked 7-0. The team then trumped over Williston Northampton 6-1. Hotchkiss defeated Avon 6-1, only to have Avon come back and beat Suffield 5-2 and then Westminster 4-3 in its latest match.

Newcomers dominated the singles lineup for Avon.

Jared Ciejek, Nick Fikre, and Adrian L’Hostis occupied the top three spots on the ladder for the whole season, at times trading positions. All played very well in every match and were indispensable in each of the team’s wins. Jack Isom held down the number 4 spot on the team for much of the season, playing very well and earning some important victories for Avon. Eric Stacey and Chris Brown traded the number 5 spot often, both earning big wins for the team, and the number 6 spot was usually up for grabs, with Jake Bourgault, Ben Chodar, Cam West, and Chris Brown all seeing significant time at that spot.

Avon featured a strong doubles lineup as well, with Adrian L’Hostis teaming with Dong Young Cha for many matches. Jake Bourgault and Cam West made another strong team that saw a lot of action. Emil Davis played with several teammates in doubles, showing his abil-ity to adapt to his partner’s playing style.

In all, every player played at least one match in both singles and doubles, showing the depth and versatility of this team.

The Avon Old Farms track team completed its regular season finishing with 7 wins and only 3 losses despite only having a handful of returning veterans. The team finished in third place in the Founders League Championship Meet for the second year in a row. The Winged Beavers were led this year by tri-captains Jon Higginbotham, Jonathan Brum-baugh, and Sam Ward.

In the Founders League championship meet, the field events kept the spark going for Avon. Peter Holst-Grubbe won the discus with a throw of 138 feet, 6 inches. Peter also took second in the javelin and sixth in the shot put, giving him 19 total points in the meet, a truly remarkable job. Newcomer Ben Riley won the javelin with a throw of 161 feet. Cody Brumbaugh took fourth in the discus. The trio of Brumbaugh, Holst-Grubbe, and Riley were among the best in the league this year. Jon Higginbotham also had a fine day, placing second in the long jump with a jump of 21 feet, 2.5 inches, and fourth in the high jump. Other scorers included Langley Young (fifth place in the triple jump and 200m dash), Mike Cox (third place in the 100m dash), and

Yong Bok Lee (fifth place in the 110HH).There were other notable performances throughout

the year. Langley Young jumped over 41 feet in the triple jump, Mike Cox ran 11.01 seconds in the 100m, Ben Riley threw 169 feet in the javelin, Cody Brumbaugh threw 45 feet in the shot put, and Peter Holst-Grubbe threw 145 feet in the discus. The distance duo of Mike Reilly and Tully Hannan also had a fine season. Mike had a personal best in the 800m run with a time of 2 minutes, ten seconds, while Tully blazed for a time of 10 minutes, 1 second for the 3000m run. Newcomers Jonathan Haspilliare ran 10 minutes and 33 seconds for the 3000m run and freshman standout Anthony Springer ran the 800m at an amazing 2 minutes, 15 seconds.

Next year the Winged Beavers will come back with even a stronger team. Many lettermen are returning: the sprint team, the jumping team, throwing events personnel (as a unit) and our distance duo are all returning, and the under-classmen are eager to contribute.
