Fr. Mark Brauer, Pastor

OUR VISION

To know Christ and

to make Christ known

Fr. Derik Peterman

Associate Pastor

Fr. Dave Tomaszycki

Associate Pastor

This weekend we celebrate Labor Day. It is a day dedicated to the social

and economic achievements of American workers: an annual tribute paid

to all workers for their contribution in making the country a better place in

which to live and work.

Labor’s Day originated over a hundred years ago. Democratic President

Grover Cleveland signed it into law. Samuel Gompers, one of America’s

great union leaders, called it “the day for which the toilers in past centuries

looked forward when their rights and wrongs would be discussed, that the

workers of our day may not only lay down their tools of labor for a holiday,

but upon which they may touch shoulders and march in phalanx and feel

the stronger for it.” And it was a celebration of people who worked a

celebration of labor, of toil, of human effort, of energy and the union

movement created it, stood for it and represented this. On Labor Day we

should honor our accomplishments. We should show our appreciation to

the ones that have provided for us over time; to thank them for their care

and concern for us and for their hard work and commitment to their family.

On this Labor Day let us pray:

For our brothers and sisters who have lost their jobs and are trying to

seek gainful employment.

For all workers who are displaced by technical changes or global

pressures to relocate jobs.

For all workers who cannot find work and for whom unemployment

assistance is not available.

For all who face difficulties or are discriminated against in getting work

or at the workplace because of race, gender, ethnic group, physical

disabilities, political or religious beliefs.

For all workers who have been affected by labor disputes or who have

been discriminated against as a result of their union activity or

because they sought justice in their place of employment.

For workers whose work is taken for granted, is unappreciated or lacks

meaning.

For families who have lost their homes and are struggling to make

ends meet.

It is sometimes difficult to convince ourselves to do the work that we need

to do. Seeing a spiritual purpose in that work can help. The following

prayer to St. Joseph, patron of workers, helps us call to mind that all of our

labor is, in fact, part of our struggle on the road to the Kingdom of Heaven.

“Glorious St. Joseph, model of all who are devoted to labor, obtain for me

the grace to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural

inclinations; to work with gratitude and joy, considering it an honor to

employ and develop, by means of labor, the gifts received from God,

disregarding difficulties and weariness; to work, above all, with purity of

intention and with detachment from self, having always before my eyes

death, and the account which I must render of time lost, of talents wasted,

We are proud to offer fulltime, inperson education

many, if not more, substitute teachers due to the

COVID19 climate. Please see the COVID19

Preparedness Plan at school.olsorrows.com under

the About Us tab to review the health and safety

precautions we have in place for a safe return for

our students and staff. Anyone with a college degree

is welcome to apply. Thank you for helping us create

a successful school year! To apply, please contact

the school office or email Mrs. Andrea Allen,

Assistant Principal at [email protected].

We are so proud to celebrate

the first week of inperson

instruction at Our Lady of

Sorrows Catholic School. This

year marks the 85th Anniversary

of “educating students who

develop spiritually, academically,

and socially.” In some ways we have seen a return to

our past. This year, to maintain social distancing in

our hallways, our students walk singlefile in a large

oneway loop. They exit their classroom to the right

and follow the large loop all the way around the hall

to arrive at their destination. Our alumni will remember

this same system from our past! Other things are

different, such as digital upgrades and small group

instruction. We thank God for Our Lady of Sorrows

Catholic School and look forward to the next 85

years!

As our big plans to celebrate this milestone change,

please watch the bulletin, Facebook page, and

website for updates.

In the Catholic tradition, work

is more than a way to make a

living; it is a form of continuing

participation in God’s creation.

This Labor Day, reflect on the

dignity of work and rights of

workers by visiting

the annual Labor Day state-

ment from the United States

Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Prayer for the Dignity of Work and

the Rights of Workers

Lord God, Master of the Vineyard,

How wonderful that you have invited us

who labor by the sweat of our brow

to be workers in the vineyard

and assist your work

to shape the world around us.

As we seek to respond to this call,

make us attentive to those who seek work

but cannot find it.

Help us listen to the struggles of those

who work hard to provide for their families

but still have trouble making ends meet.

Open our eyes to the struggles of those exploited

and help us speak for just wages and safe conditions,

the freedom to organize, and time for renewal.

For work was made for humankind

and not humankind for work.

Let it not be a vehicle for exploitation

but a radiant expression of our human dignity.

Give all who labor listening hearts

that we may pause from our work

to receive your gift of rest.

Fill us with your Holy Spirit

that you might work through us

to let your justice reign.

Amen.

STEWARDSHIP

Back in June, the Parish Finance Council, through

its chairperson, Mark McInerny, offered an update of

how the parish was doing during the worldwide

pandemic. This is the time of year when the PFC

provides for you the Annual Report. The report

gives you an overview of the finances and the life of

the parish during the past year. Stewardship is how

we share all of our gifts, not only through our financial

generosity, but through our prayers (especially the

Mass) and our service to one another. With the

Annual Report we invite you to see how we have

navigated our Stewardship GPS (Generosity, Prayer,

and Service) in the 20192020 fiscal year.

In the past, you would have received a copy of this

report in the mail; however, good stewards handle

resources responsibly, so in this COVID year, we

wish to share it with you electronically on our website

in order to save the cost of printing and mailing. To

view the Annual Report, go to church.olsorrows.com,

then to About Us and click on Councils and Commissions

and then Parish Finance Council.

CSA: As our lives have been so impacted by

COVID 19, Archbishop Vigneron’s annual bishop’s

appeal, Catholic Services Appeal, did not take place

as planned in May. Instead, the Archbishop has

deferred it to next weekend, September 1213, 2020.

You should have received a letter from the Archdiocese

of Detroit with an invitation to give and instructions

on how to do so. More on this next week.

Over the summer we had a ZOOM pilot for a Called

& Gifted workshop, which is a way to find out the

special gifts God has bestowed upon you to share.

We will update you soon about how to be part of

such a workshop.

We also held a Family Rosary in the Park each

Wednesday in July and August. We gathered, safely

socially distanced, to pray for our families, our

parish, our country and healing from COVID 19.

Our average attendance was 4045 people each

week. Thank you to all who participated and led the

decades! Please continue to offer prayers for these

intentions.

This Labor Day weekend, let us particularly remember

the workers of our nation and those without work.

Sharon Williams, Director of Parish Life & Stewardship

Saints Among Us

We continue to receive nomi-

nations which acknowledge the

wonderful and selfless people

in the parish who work behind

the scenes on our behalf. This week’s saint is:

Mrs. Jan Ratliff

Jan has been a parishioner

since she was a child (her

maiden name is Trevisan) and

has been very active in many

ways in the life of the parish.

She and her husband, Brian,

have been marriage mentors

for engaged couples and

sacristans for the weekend

Masses. The combined

Trevisan and Ratliff families have celebrated over

100 sacraments here at Our Lady of Sorrows.

When her children were growing up, Jan was very

active in Vacation Bible School and made the angel

costumes for the nativity pageant. When her

daughter, Deidre, began teaching here, she could

be seen helping in the classroom. With Deidre

shifting from teacher to Director of Advancement,

Jan now helps with most events put on by the

school advancement office.

In recent years, Jan has been part of the RCIA

team (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). She is

invaluable in her walk with those who are preparing

to enter the Catholic Church. She offers them very

practical ways to live the faith.

Thank you, Jan Ratliff, for being a Saint Among Us.

CSA 2020

Have you considered that

this time of challenge and

uncertainty could possibly be

the Church in Detroit’s finest

hour? This is a time for our

parishes and communities to

do what we do best: rise up.

In southeast Michigan, we

are no strangers to challenges,

and we, with the grace and love of God, have

always been resilient, rising from the ashes and

overcoming these trials.

Over the past year, even amidst trial, we haven’t

stopped working to feed the hungry, shelter the

homeless, or equip individuals to know the love

of God.This pandemic has not stopped us from

sharing the Gospel! But this mission isn’t something

we can do alone.

Mary: Handmaid of the Lord by

St. Teresa of Kolkata

St. Teresa of Kolkata is known

throughout the world as a woman

who was committed to the Gospel.

In this inspiring talk, St. Teresa

shares her insights on the Blessed

Virgin Mary as a model of woman-

hood and perfect discipleship. She

shows us that we, too, can do the

will of God by saying "yes" to Him

in big and little ways; nothing is too

insignificant.
