A Note for Parents / Guardians Week 6 Week of: April 27th, 2020
Dear Parents and/or Guardians, We hope you enjoyed our Week 5 Speech Packet and found the online resources, activities, and worksheets useful throughout the week. If you ever have any questions or comments pertaining to the skills targeted or information presented in this packet, please reach out to the speech-language pathologist. Page 2 shows the ‘Team Chart’ which you can refer to in order to access your child’s work for his or her designated Speech Team Color. If you are unclear about which team your child is on, please contact the speech therapist. This week, we have chosen 2 new target speech and language skills for each of our teams! Below you will find all the material needed. Please remember to use the BoomLearning resource as extra practice. We have received great feedback with this website. As your child’s speech therapist, we are able to see their progress on the ‘decks.’ We will continue with our teleconference/teletherapy session throughout the week. If you cannot make it to a phone conference or video conference, please let us know in advance and, if possible, we can schedule a make-up session. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us through E-mail (written below) or through the ‘Remind’ App.
Hope you and your family are safe and healthy. Happy Speeching <3

Functional Communication: Functional communication should be targeted throughout the day. Try to set up situations where your child will need to utilize a functional communication phrase. Here are some ideas: (1) Untie your child’s shoe (Functional Communication Phrase=I need help to tie my shoe; (2) During snack time show your child a choice of 3 snacks and have him or her choose what he/she wants (Functional Communication Phrase: I want the _____); (3) Put a motivating toy out of reach (Functional Communication Phrase=I need help to reach); (4) When your child requests a desired item, show your child something he or she did not request (Functional Communication Phrase=No thanks). You may need to model these phrases but try to set up these scenarios multiple times throughout the day for extra practice. Following Directions: Look online or in a cookbook for one of your favorite recipes. Work with your child to follow the steps in the correct order. As you are following the recipe, narrate what you are doing focusing on the action and key vocabulary (e.g., Now we’re going to MIX the SUGAR in the BOWL.). When you’re finished you can review what you made and how you made it while you enjoy the delicious recipe!

Plural Nouns : Go over body part vocabulary while also practicing plurals. Start at the top of your body and move all the way down to your toes. Have the student label each body part(s) (e.g., One head, Two eyes, One nose, One mouth, Two ears, One neck, Two feet, etc.). Prepositions: Play a scavenger hunt game by placing highly motivating items throughout the house (e.g., a snack, blocks, stuffed animals, etc.). Then give your child directions to find the items (e.g., Your first block is ON the couch. Your next block is UNDER the book. Your next block is NEXT TO the chair).

Cause and Effect: Using items you have at home try a simple science experiment to show cause/effect. For example: measure a cup of baking soda and ½ cup of white vinegar. In a large bowl, pour the baking soda and then slowly add the vinegar to see what happens. Discuss the cause/effect that you observed. Article Words: Look through a magazine or newspaper. Find a section or reading that interests your child. Highlight the ‘article’ words in sentences. Now have your child make their own sentence using that article word.
