A New Reality By Jacob Crabtree

description

A New Reality looks at three different bodies of work, nOOb, War Games and Cobb, which have been created to show unfamiliar realities that are more well-known than they are at first understood. They try to deceive us into believing something that they aren’t, and in doing so create more possibilities as to what is seen. The photographs have come from an interest in video games, which have formed the ideas for these works. Being captivated by them, and creating work from the influence they have had on the way I think, enabled me to create work that corresponds to one another, but also have their own meanings.

The photographs have come from an interest in video games, which have formed the ideas for these works. Be-ing captivated by them, and creating work from the influence they have had on the way I think, enabled me to create work that corresponds to one another, but also have their own meanings.

nOOb

nOOb is about interoperating a new possibility for the individuals in the photographs, with regards to what they are looking at. They are something that I don’t see very often; because I am one of them, concentrating intently on something that blurs the lines of the reality I am in. To be able to observe my friends partaking in this activity, who are from different backgrounds and share different opinions to it, they provide an interesting similarity to one another with their responses seen in their facial expressions.

War Games

Many war photographs are staged, and almost all can be seen as the photographer’s own portrayal of war. What this project looks at is at how war is viewed today and the use that the media and entertainment business have with it. Within video games it can be regarded as something almost real when put into a specific context. It is the responsibility of the viewer to understand the pictures they are shown on a near day-to-day basis, and not to just simply accept them as fact.

Cobb

Cobb is a fictional character; a part of my imagination rather than my personality, his existence runs through my head like a movie on a film reel. For me, it was always a cinematic and ambiguous body of work that taps into multiple realities. A surreal dreamlike narrative allows the lines of reality to blur; Cobb’s story becomes clearer but retains an element of doubt. The cinematic atmosphere and content provide an ambiguity to the narrative; the idea of not knowing the context of what is shown opens the imagination to different possibilities and ways of interpreting the story.
