Soc. 36 (2000) Suffolk Natural History, Vol. 36 64 A new micro fungus in Suffolk Whilst looking at bryophytes on Maidscross Hill, Lakenheath in June 1999 I noticed a patch of the moss Ceratodon purpureus which appeared to have tiny blackish gemmae in the leaf axils. A closer look showed that they were not gemmae but looked more like frass left by some browsing invertebrate. At home, under the microscope they were revealed as ascocarps of a tiny fungus and contained asci with large spores. I sent a sample to Mrs J. P. Ellis who was able to tell me it was a Pyrenomycete but could not name it. At her suggestion I sent it to Brian Spooner at the herbarium in Kew. He named it Bryostroma trichostomi (Roll.) Döbbler. It has been recorded from various European countries including France and Germany but not previously in Great Britain. Richard Fisk
