DEAR PARTNERS, on behalf of Mayor Rahm Emanuel
and the Choose Chicago Board of Directors and all
those who collaborate with and support us, it is our
pleasure to share the 2016 Annual Report.
LETTER FROM THE CHAIR & CEO
6 CHOOSE CHICAGO
149050BRO_r1_ChooseChicago_2016_AnnualReport_19.indd 6 3/24/17 6:35 PM
2016 was punctuated by welcoming a projected 54.1 million visitors, an increase of 2.9 percent, representing 1.5 million more visitors than the prior year and taking another step toward a goal of 55 million. Helping fuel this growth was hosting 31 major conventions at McCormick Place, 16 of which experienced either record attendance or record exhibitor participation.
The Annual Report provides highlights on each, plus operational and departmental achievements, as well as vivid examples of programs, activities and events that help fulfill our responsibilities to our partners, constituents and stakeholders.
While 2016 generated many highlights, we need to remain focused on the many new opportunities and challenges facing our industry, building upon our momentum and continuing to identify and target growth opportunities and new customers for our city, county, region and state.
Chief among these are expanding opportunities to attract a balance of large citywide meetings as well as self-contained meetings; continuing to build upon a strong regional domestic market and expand to attract more visitors from key national source markets; and extending Chicago’s global footprint targeting key markets around the world.
We would also like to take this time to thank our many partners who share in this mission. This was a year of transition and we would be remiss if we did not take this time to acknowledge the team at Choose Chicago, past and present.
We will continue to rely on the steady support and engagement of our partners and share in the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

CULTURAL TOURISM
Choose Chicago works to increase awareness and visitation to Chicago’s cultural entities, events, attractions and neighborhoods by promoting the City of Chicago as a premier cultural destination through the following partnerships:
2016 marked the first full year of Choose Chicago’s historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China’s Ministry of Culture. The MOU is designed to support cultural cooperation and further develop cultural bridges to strengthen each destination as a prominent global cultural tourism destination. Under the MOU, Choose Chicago hosted Jackie Chan’s Long Yun Kung Fu Troupe for the annual Chinese New Year Celebration and the music ensemble Sounds of China for the World Music Festival.
Choose Chicago continues to partner with The League of Chicago Theatres to present Chicago Theatre Week to increase awareness and drive visitation to Chicago’s vast array of theatre offerings during the first quarter.
The Chicago Greeter program is a free service that matches visitors with city-wise volunteers for 2-4 hour guided visits of Chicago.
