Pastor’s Pen Dear Friends,

First, I want to thank you all for making Kathie and my

open house a wonderful celebra!on. Your support

and outpouring of love was so encouraging and

overwhelming to us. We are s!ll talking about that day

and the way it moved us. Thank you so much.

Second, I want to thank you for the addi!onal

outpouring of love and support in the death of my

father. That was unexpected and we have been

coping as best we can in the midst of many other

transi!ons; moving Kathie’s belongings into our house,

prepping her house for sale, ge%ng used to each other

living in the same space, all the usual things

newlyweds experience. I have been asked to officiate

and we will be going to rejoin my siblings and other

family in early September.

Third, I want thank you for your faithfulness

throughout our !me together. It is no small thing that

we have not only survived each other over

twenty-two years like an old married couple barely

speaking to each other, but that we have grown and

deepened our rela!onship, have supported each

other through the inevitable ups and downs of

communal life, celebrated births and bap!sms and

weddings as well as honored and celebrated the lives of

loved ones who returned to our heavenly Father. We

have known each other, worked alongside each other,

worked through disputes and worked toward reconcilia!on,

renewal and forgiveness. We didn’t give up on each

other in a world that throws relationships away as

if they were disposable and cheap. We have loved in

spite of disagreements, recognizing that differences of

opinion pale in comparison to the redeeming power of

Christ’s love. Thank you.

Finally, I want to thank you for con!nuing the process

of learning and growing with me. Our work is not yet

done. We recognized our need for improving and

growing our children, youth and adult educa!on as well

as our need to improve our worship services. There is

much to learn in those areas and we are a(emp!ng to

be less reac!ve and more proac!ve in our approaches.

We are beginning to recognize that we must become

much more inten!onal in our plans and ac!ons because

the world is rapidly changing all around us and within

our families. Our expecta!ons are changing as

well. We have to transform our mentalities and practices

if we want to realize the balanced growth that is evidence

of health and vitality.

As we enter into our fall programming I invite you to

double your efforts in praying for our teachers, support

staff, administra!ve staff and pastors. I invite you to li$ our

congregation in your prayers that we can move toward

vitality and health in every area of our communal life

in order to fulfill our calling as Christ’s body in our loca!on.

I invite you to get involved in some ministry of our church

because it is good for your soul and you are wanted and

needed. If you don’t know where you might serve that

would be helpful to you and the church, please contact me.

I am glad to visit with you and we’ll find a place for you to

find meaningful mission and a sense of belonging.

Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity in our

relationship. You have taught me much by your

example.

FINANCE by Elder Dave Fehr

It is hard to believe summer is coming to an end. I enjoy the change of seasons, with fall bringing cooler weather, school star!ng

back up, football season, etc. It also means it is the !me of the year when we are asked to make a financial commitment to the

church in the form of a pledge. This year, Consecra!on Sunday is on October 28. The theme for Consecra!on Sunday is “A Past of

Service, A Future of Hope.” The intent of this theme is to remind us of where Hope Church was in the past and how we are

growing and evolving. The same is true with us individually. Please take some !me between now and Consecra!on Sunday to

reflect on how your faith has grown, and how important it is to you to see Hope Church grow.

As informa!on, we are projec!ng next year’s general budget to increase by 3% due to infla!on and growth. You will be receiving

your pledge card in the mail in late September. As in the past, you can mail your pledge card back to the church, put it in any

Sunday’s offering plate, or turn it in to the Finance office. It would be greatly appreciated if you would turn your pledge card in by

Consecra!on Sunday so session can plan next year’s budget responsibly. Plan on a(ending church on Consecra!on Sunday as we

will have a celebra!on brunch at 10:00 a.m., which will be served by the “Flapjack Guy.”

This year’s pledge card will not have anything to do with the three-year Capital Reduc!on Campaign. Thank you for your con!nued

contribu!ons to the campaign. As we are approaching the end of the first year, of the three-year campaign approximately

$240,000 of the $409,000 pledged has been received. If you didn’t pledge to the capital campaign last year and would like to, just

let Jayne Molacek know. There were some ques!ons about the repor!ng of contribu!ons to the capital campaign on the quarterly

statement. Money donated to the campaign in 2017 does not show on this year’s statements. If you need to know what you

contributed in 2017, contact Jayne Molacek at the office.

8:00-8:45 a.m. Join Pastor Rus Kosits for coffee and Who wrote the Bible and why? Class will be starting with Moses, Moses, Moses. Meet in the library.

10:30-11:30 a.m. Great Ends of the Church with Nancy Corran

This 6 session class will be using Presbyterian curriculum and will focus on the answer: Why bother with Church? Explore our Presbyterian definition of what church is, and what we as a church are called to do. Class will focus on the church’s understanding of its purpose and inspire us to dedicate ourselves to the church’s work in the world. Room #1.

Sermon Follow-up with Pastor Dave

What was meaningful for you? Additional questions? What else is going on in your life or the world that you may wish to discuss? Meet in the lobby.

The Wired Word--This class uses current event articles and appropriate scripture for small group discussions that are relevant to Christian living. Meet in the sanctuary.

Understanding the Old Testament with Chuck Bulger will present information from Bernhard W. Anderson’s book, which interweaves historical, archeological, literary and religious perspectives. Meet in the library.

This summer we devoted three sessions to the concepts of Creation Care-A Christian Calling. As we continue to explore our Christian values and respond in thanksgiving for God’s creation, what are the

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY by Elder Lori Laster

We are so excited to welcome the children back to Sunday School! Hopefully by now they are starting to settle in to a routine with the new school year. Pastor Rus has put together some great lessons for the kids using our VBS theme, Shipwrecked! We will be singing some of the same songs we learned this summer while we “Unpack the Parables.”

We are always looking for people who would like to help with Sunday School. If you are interested in teaching one lesson per month, or if you just want to be a helper, contact Pastor Rus or me (Lori Laster). We would love to have you on our team!

MISSION by Elder Brian Claus

Thank you to all who donated their time as part of the Hope Brush-Up Nebraska team. This year’s team

repainted Rev. Robert and Carolyn Taylor’s home. Robert (81) and Carolyn (77) have lived in their home at

3805 Bedford for about 60 years. They have both dealt with their share of health issues and their daughter,

who is a mother of 2 young boys, has been dealing with cancer. So their family home grew to accommodate

their daughter and grandsons. Our team had some great conversations with the entire family during our

painting. Robert and Carolyn originally moved from Pittsburgh, PA, where they were involved in street ministry.

Robert described many encounters with inner-city gang members and drug dealers he and others were trying

to spread the word of God to. Now they continue that message and ministry in North Omaha. We were

blessed to meet these wonderful Omaha neighbors of ours and for the opportunity to serve them in God’s

name. This was all possible thanks to Hope congregation donations and prayers and the hard labor from:

Kathy Andersen, Ken Anderson, Soochin, Eunice and Lucy Cho, Brian and Jake Claus, Darci Davis, Dave

and Lillian Fehr, Harriet Hanson, Chuck and Patricia Lundquist, Paul and Tyler Richling, and Matt VanHook.

Siena Francis House Meal Serving

The first Saturday of the month, Hope Church is blessed to serve at the Siena-Francis House. We serve the nighttime meals. Time invested is only a few hours (4 p.m.-7 p.m.) and the rewards are immense! It is a worthwhile project that Hope Church has embraced wholeheartedly. If you are interested, the sign-up sheet in the lobby or contact Mark Canady: thecanadys6@gmail.com.

Abide Better Together Bash

We’re not called to be better, we’re called to be different. In our world today, it is normal to get overwhelmed with the complexity of problems like poverty and reconciliation. It is normal to watch the news and either think people need to deal with their own problems or that someone else should tackle difficult issues.

At Abide, we believe being different is the answer to overcoming adversity. Join us in celebrating and empowering those who choose a different path: engaging, connecting, supporting, and encouraging those in Omaha’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

Bring God’s Message to Fellow Omaha Women

September 22, 2018 – Siena Francis Women’s Retreat – 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

We are really excited about this coming event!!!! Once again instead of holding this event at the Siena

Francis Shelter we will be holding this event at First Presbyterian Church – Omaha. They graciously let us

use their facility at no charge. One of the main reasons we like to use this facility is the close proximity to the

shelter. Our hope is that they will want to continue attending First Presbyterian church since it is so close. The

ladies will be transported to First Presbyterian Church by Siena Francis Shelter and it will be open to the

women who are in their drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. We are excited for them to get out of their

comfort zone and experience a time with no distractions. We will be experiencing the “Sweet Life Café where

Women Savor Time with God”. Some of you may think that you are not equipped to be part of this retreat, but

I encourage anyone (that means YOU) to come with an open heart and just share Christ’s Love with each

other. We come away with so much more than we bring to the table – just ask some of the people who have

been there – Tracy Comba, Darci Davis, Mary Ellen Gumbert, Nancy Mittelbrun, Julie Reeks,

Thelma Symanietz, or if you are interested in serving, please contact Kathy Andersen at 402-514-7763.

MUSIC & WORSHIP by Elder Arlene Thietje

Our fourth and final genera!onal overview is a look at the Millennials – those aged 13-36. How do they see the world,

how do they view God and how do they perceive the church?

Their view of the world is to find more balance between home and ins!tu!onal childcare than what they experienced

growing up. Sixty-eight percent of this genera!on was raised in childcare. They show a return to family values. They

have changing views on sexuality, alcohol, drugs from previous genera!ons. They presume technology, earth care and

media. They tend to be fickle. School shoo!ngs have been a part of their genera!onal exposure.

They have a desire for relevance when it comes to grasping God. They tend to be skep!cal. They show a sense of

mystery & wonder in seeking rela!onship with God rather than assuming certainty.

When it comes to their view of the church they believe they can “get it online” or “through friends”. Their approach to

church is very u!litarian – if it works for you, its fine. However, they are hungry for rela!onships. There is a move

toward home school including home church school.

The Millennials are in a genera!onal cycle known as “civics”. They were protected as children and have come of age

apprecia!ng heroes. They are overachievers and ins!tu!on builders (but not necessarily the ins!tu!ons of the

previous genera!ons). They are busy adults. They can be respected and inspiring leaders.

Next month, we’ll draw our comparison/contrast to a close as we look at the implica!ons of the dynamics of each

genera!on and its impact on church growth, worship style, and programming.

texts, e-mails, plants, flowers, food, and those who came to the visitation

and funeral in the recent death of Mary Ann Molacek. We have been

PANTRY of HOPE

September is Hunger Action Month. God created you to do something and make an impact on your community.

Hope’s Pantry continues helping our community. Foods that you enjoy at your house are perfect to donate. We make good use of all non-perishable items. With school beginning, we usually see an increased need of families in need of food. 105 food items helping three families were distributed from July 20 – August 17, 2018. Your generous donations help those in need. Thank you to everyone who donates to the Pantry.
