Campus Chatter: An Update from the Dairy Science ClubTo kick off 2015, Dairy Science Club members took part in the 98th Annual PA Farm Show. Members assisted with the PDCA Dairy Judging Contest for adults and conducted a youth judging contest for 4-H and FFA members. Members also assisted with the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association cheese stand.Club members were very active at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention. More than 30 members helped conduct the quiz bowl and jeopardy contests, while others participated in the two events. More than 30 teams competed in the quiz bowl contest. Congratulations to the teams from Berks and Centre for winning their divisions! In addition, Dairy Science Club member Amber Gabel was named one of the winners of the Distinguished Junior Member contest, and Caitlyn Pool and Collin Stoltzfus were finalists. February was a busy month as Penn State hosted NESA. Ten universities traveled to University Park. In the overall institution rankings, Penn State placed first. Additionally, Penn State teams placed first for quiz bowl and judging. In the oral presentation contest, Amy Kraus earned first place and Caitlyn Pool placed third. Isaac Haagen served as overall chair for the competition. Earlier in the month, Dairy Science Club members Chad Horst,

Amy Kraus and Stephen Smith were members of the winning team at the National Beef Cattlemen’s Association quiz bowl contest in San Antonio.During spring break, 44 club members and chaperones visited Italy. They flew from New York City to Milan. Students were welcomed at CRA, the Italian research fa-cility that is similar to USDA. This center performed much of the original research relating to milk quality and robotic milking. They have also looked at behavioral differences from offspring of clones and have conducted many trials re-lating to colostrum. Other visits included a winery, cheese manufacturing facility and two dairy herds. One of these milked 100 water buffalo and made Parmesan cheese. The trip wrapped up with a day in Venice. On March 21, the club hosted the spring judging contest. This is one of our oldest activities, and nearly 200 4-H, FFA and collegiate contestants judged six classes from the Penn State herd. The next weekend club members headed to Gettysburg to conduct the Pennsylvania Jersey Jeopardy contest at the state Jersey convention. April will also be a busy month with events such as Osteochallenge, the 5-kilo-meter walk/run that benefits the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and Meet A Farm Animal Day. The Penn State Dairy Expo will take place on Saturday, April 25, and the club awards banquet is sched-uled for April 29.

DAS Alumni Tailgate The PSU Dairymen’s Club, Stockmen’s Club and Poultry Science Club held the 9th annual football tailgate for alumni on November 1, 2014 game. The Penn State Nittany Lions faced the University of Maryland Terrapins. The game may not have ended in Penn State’s favor, but DAS tailgaters enjoyed networking and visiting with Maryland alumni.

Watch the Dairymen’s Club website and Facebook page for information about the 2015 DAS tailgate. If you’re interested in helping with the event, contact Cindy Shaffer.

Club members raise funds for Burdette, Stiles familiesThe Penn State Dairy Science Club and Alpha Zeta Fraternity teamed up to host a benefit dinner for Patricia Stiles and Reese Burdette on February 25, 2015. Members of the dairy community, Patricia and Reese were injured in a house fire last May. DSci and AZ were in search of a way to help the cause when they decided to pull together their resources and efforts to host the event. Together, the two organizations planned the event, sold tickets, prepared the pasta dinner and served the guests. Food and supplies were donated equally by the organizations and the event was held at Alpha Zeta Fraternity house. More than 160 guests were served in house and through take-out requests. Themed after the family, Reese’s Rotini and Patricia’s Penne were featured on the menu and enjoyed by guests. Ticket sales and donations totaled $2,680, all of which will be donated to the families to defer medical bills. The Penn State Dairy Science Club and Alpha Zeta Fraternity sincerely thank the community and the agricultural industry who attended the event and donated to the great cause. —Information and photo provided by Sara Kitchen
