Hall of Fame MembersDuring NAAP’s 30th Anniversary Year, the NAAP Board voted to develop a new

membership category, Hall of Fame Membership. For the sum of $1,000, an individual could join NAAP for a lifetime. The membership dues would be paid in four increments of $250 over four (4) years. Once the last payment is made, the Hall of Fame Member will receive a special membership card and certificate for their office wall.

At the Annual Members’ Meeting during the Conference, several members requested that the Hall of Fame Membership be reinstated. The Board has decided to again offer this membership option for those who would like to take advantage of this. Contact Colleen Keegan at: [email protected] for an application.

The Hall of Fame Members include:• Melissa Dixon;

• Troy Lott;• Mae Petty;

• Lisa Ost-Beikmann; and• Nancy Williams.

Congratulations and thank you for supporting NAAP through this membership!

Introducing NAAP’s “New” Executive DirectorTen years ago, Gail Buckner resigned her position as the Executive Director of NAAP

to marry Wendell Rone. They had known each other since high school and rekindled their romance after a chance meeting. Little did Gail know, that one day, she would return as NAAP’s Executive Director!

A well-trained consultant/educator, Gail has been in the field of Gerontology for more than 30 years. She began her career as an Activity Professional in long term care, working as an Activity Director. Gail has a Certification in Gerontology from the Uni-versity of Tennessee and is also a graduate of the Leisure Aging Management School, University of Maryland, with study emphasis on programming for aging, and is an honor graduate of Dale Carnegie.

Gail has always been active in her professional organizations, serving as President of the Activity Coordinators of Tennessee and the South Carolina Activity Professional As-sociation. Gail served on the NAAP Board of Trustees in several capacities before accept-ing the Executive Director position in 1999.

Gail has received many awards for her dedicated service to the profession and the professional organizations she served so faithfully. Her awards include: Activity Director of the Year, from the Tennessee Health Care Association; Activity Consultant of the Year, from the South Carolina Activity Professional Association; and NAAP’s Trustees’ Award of Excellence.

The decision to accept the Board’s request to return as NAAP’s Executive Director was not made lightly. Gail is dedicated to rebuilding NAAP’s membership and service to its members. When she was Executive Director, she personally made sure members were notified of their impending renewal date and followed up when their renewal did not arrive in the office. This will again be Gail’s number one focus as she begins her tenure.

The new NAAP Office is located in the Central Time Zone and Gail will be available from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. CST to answer members’ questions. Voicemail messages and emails will be returned at the end of the day. Please remember that Gail lives in the Central time zone when making your calls – after all, she does deserve time away from the office.

Welcome Aboard!

The Soothing Sounds of MusicBy Anthony F. Vicari, EdS, AC-BC, ADC/EDU, CDCM, CDP

Professional Development TrusteeAh, the beautiful and sonorous sounds of music “have charms

that soothe the savage breast” indeed, have direct and significant implications for each and every Activity Professional. No matter where you work; residential living, assisted living, adult day services or in a rehabilitation/health care setting, music changes a resident’s mood and helps redirect and transform a potentially negative and/or dangerous behavior into a positive and most-times gratifying personal experience.

As a former elementary and junior high music teacher, I know from personal experience that music changes lives. In fact, I will go as far as to say, that music can be a healing agent for many individu-als. I love this quote by Geoffrey Latham; “Music is the vernacular of the human soul.”

I know that most of us include sing-a-longs, hymn-sings, gospel hour, karaoke, and oodles and oodles of musical entertainment for our residents throughout our monthly programs. However, I want us to continue “thinking outside the box” and pushing forward as we provide Quality of Life events for our residents. Have you ever thought about starting a resident-directed choir and/or ensemble? How about having residents serve as volunteers, providing musi-cal (vocal and instrumental) one-to-one room visits for those bed-bound folks? Another very popular musical program is providing residents an opportunity to showcase their talents before the staff, families and community members; that’s right, a Resident Talent Hour!

These are just a few ideas, but I do know “the sky is the limit” when it comes to Activity Professionals and the creativity factor! Of course, always find out what musical genre each resident prefers to listen to and enjoys. Research has proven that music has direct, positive impacts on residents’ sleep patterns and concentration lev-els. If you haven’t started, please start now and don’t ever, ever give up! Our residents deserve the best!

31st National Conference: Las Vegas Style!

Anthony F. Vicari EdS, AC-BC, ADC/EDU, CDCM, CDP, Professional Development Trustee

Well, I can’t believe that it’s all over! Our 31st National Conference, Activities: A Sure Bet, in Las Vegas, Nevada is now part of history and in the record books! Folks, it was truly a wonderful, spectacular conference filled with great education, good reminiscing and fellowship, and of course lots and lots of fun and laughs!

First, I would like to say a great big “Thank You” to the Professional Development Committee for an outstanding job; well done team! Our breakout session speakers were top-notch and each person provided many relevant and adaptable ready-to-use strategies for our Activity Profes-sionals to implement and utilize!

To our wonderful pre-conference speakers; thank you Gail Buckner-Rone, Lisa Ost-Beikmann, and Pat Griffith. Conference attendees at each of your sessions extended “rave reviews” and were most anxious to get home and be-gin using all their new-found knowledge with their fellow team members.

We were honored to have Dr. Andrew Thorn, Ph.D., present our Opening and Closing Keynote Addresses. Dr. Thorn provided tremendous and powerful words of wis-dom and shared personal stories and relationships that both moved us cognitively and emotionally. Thank you, Andrew, for bringing U-wun-ge-lay-ma: A Guide To Next Level Liv-ing into our lives.

To the NAAP Board: your tireless devotion and dedica-tion to excellence is seen in all that each of you do; every day. Thank you for your service; it is noted and appreciated.

Finally, to the NAAP Members: all I can say is, “Wow!” Your support of our national organization is stellar. Thank you for all the positive comments regarding our National Conference. Your constructive suggestions will be reviewed by the entire NAAP Board. Know that we are here to serve you and continue making our educational opportunities the very best possible. Members, you are what makes NAAP successful and for this I am most thankful. I hope to see each of you at many more educational venues. Stay “tuned” for where we are going for our 2013 Fall Education Summit; you don’t want to miss this one!

Colleen Keegan, AP-BCMembership/Nominations Trustee

Hello! My name is Colleen Keegan, and I am the new Membership/Nominations Trustee for NAAP. It is a great honor to be serving our mem-bers and I look forward to working with all of you! I am currently work-ing to become familiar with the duties of the Membership/Nominations Trustee and want to sincerely thank Alisa Tagg for her patience and guid-ance during this process. Her experience and organization have helped make this a smooth transition.

Here is some background information about me so we can get better acquainted. I live in Madison, Wisconsin with my husband and our two rescued dogs. Currently, I am the Activity Director and Volunteer Coor-dinator at All Saints Assisted Living and Memory Care in Madison. I have been at the facility for three years and will be helping the facility celebrate its 5th Anniversary this July!

I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wis-consin-Eau Claire and have worked in the field for 11 years, in a variety of settings, including: adult day services, assisted living and long term care facilities. I am a board certified Activity Professional through NAAPCC, a Certified Dementia Care Specialist and a Dementia Trainer for the state of Wisconsin. I am currently serving my second term as the Public Rela-tions chair for WRAP and a second term as treasurer for my regional activ-ity group. In addition, I am serving my second year as WRAP’s Conference Speaker Chair and have served on numerous committees for my local re-gion. In 2011, I was selected as WRAP’s Activity Professional of the Year.

As I serve on the NAAP Board, I hope to inspire Activity Profession-als to become involved at a national level. Activity Professionals are cur-rently facing a variety of challenges. I believe involvement with NAAP will help members not only be aware and knowledgeable about these changing times, but it will confirm your commitment to assist other Activity Pro-fessionals to better serve their profession. I truly believe that NAAP is a lifeline for professionals and it is my goal for members to feel connected and involved with this organization. As the Membership/Nominations Trustee, I will use this opportunity to inspire and encourage others in the field to come forward and share their time and talents, while encouraging “seasoned” members to share their expertise.

I would look to build a stronger foundation for this organization through relational support. I believe in reaching out to members and providing ways to network and learn from each other. As part of the NAAP Board, I have come to recognize the need for not only Activity Professionals to be aware of NAAP’s purpose and goals, but also to spread the word to other health-care disciplines.

Developing rapport with others and offering assistance when needed is crucial to our field; as we network with not only Activity Professionals, but also with our professional peers. This is vital to our organization’s growth. Members need to be aware of what NAAP is offering and how they can participate and grow as professionals. NAAP should be a necessary path for an Activity Professional’s education, networking, and growth.

Please consider serving on a NAAP Committee, nominating a profes-sional peer for a NAAP Award, applying for a NAAP scholarship, giving the gift of a NAAP membership to your staff, or attending a NAAP Education Summit or Annual Conference. Get involved and grow as a professional!

Anthony Vicari, Professional Development Trustee, welcomes everyone to the Conference.

National Commission for Certifying Agencies’ Clarification

By Diane Mockbee BS, AC-BC, ACCAt the State/International Contact meeting at the NAAP conference in Las

Vegas, I was asked about the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). I want to elaborate on what I said, because I did not have the written information in front of me and I do not like to talk “off the cuff ” when I might provide inaccurate information. The NCCA offers accreditation to certifying bodies. The NCCA has very strict standards that must be followed. It is also expensive to obtain this accreditation, as well as to maintain it.

NAAPCC has been striving to follow the NCCA standards, even before its inception and are working toward eventual accreditation.

Other bodies with NCCA accreditation include the:• American Board for Certification in Homeland Security;• American Board of Optometry;• American College of Sports Medicine;• Certification Board for Music Therapists;• Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology;• Dental Assisting National Board;• National Certification Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, Inc.;• Pharmacy Technician Certification Board; and• Various Nursing Certification Boards, including: Nurse Anesthetists, etc.

Listed below are the NCCA Standards NAAPCC is already following:• Certifying body does not require any specific course to meet certification

requirements;• Confidentiality/disclosure and conflict of interest of all key personnel

involved with the certification program is addressed;• Rationale for Grandfathering of limited, qualified certificants prior to

accreditation is provided;• Certifying body has an assessment instrument in place;• Certifying body can demonstrate no undue influence from any other body

and has autonomy in decision making involving certification;• Has a distinct firewall between education and certification activities, no

conflict of interest;• Has a well defined purpose, population being certified and justification for

appropriateness of activities;• Certification program is financially viable;• There is sufficient staff resources/expertise and use of consultants to

conduct an effective program; and• Consequences to certificants who do not re-certify are published.

Below are some of the standards we are working to complete this year:• Equitable disciplinary policies to address complaints or ethical issues;• Code of ethics in place for certified individuals;• Appeals process in place;• Public Board member is in place; and• A list of certified individuals is kept and can be verified upon request

without violating confidential information.

Ways & MeansThis year’s Ways & Means raised approximately

$4,212 during the 2013 Conference in Las Vegas. These funds came from a variety of sources: Silent Auction, Live Auction, Ways & Means table, and sale of raffle tickets for a 2014 Conference registration. New items that were at the Ways & Means booth included a Policy and Procedure Manual on a flash drive, BPA-free cups with lid and straw, NAAP logo pens, and Sticky Note pads. Look for the items to be on the website for sale, very soon.

Thank you to the state associations, exhibitors, and individuals that contributed items for the auctions. We had a twist this year to the Silent Auction and added a Live Auction. Four items from the Silent Auction were originally chosen for the Live Auction. Congratulations to the MassCAP and SCAPA state associations – their donations earned them reserved prime seating at our Awards Banquet. The other two items that were cho-sen for the Live Auction were donated by two Board members, Susan Rauch, Immediate Past-President and Nancy Williams, Public Relations Trustee. The two items donated by the Board members were auctioned live at our Members’ Meeting on Thursday evening and the state association baskets were auctioned live at the Awards Banquet. There were also 6 items that were not picked up at the conclusion of the Silent Auction and they were auctioned live at the Awards Banquet. We were privileged to have as our auctioneer, Dr. Andrew Thorn who was also our Opening and Closing Keynote Speaker. He brought humor and enthusiasm to the auc-tion, which encouraged higher bids. We thank everyone who donated items for the auctions and for those who bid on all the items. You helped make this year’s event a HUGE success!!

We had two winners of 2014 Conference registra-tions. LeAnne Howell of Texas won the 2014 registra-tion raffle, and Matt Wittwer of Utah won the drawing for the 2014 registration.

Call for Papers for Annual Conference

Anthony Vicari, Professional Development Trustee, has updated the Call for Papers and Nancy Williams, Public Relations Trustee, has put the 2014 Conference Call for Papers on the NAAP website. The Call for Papers can be found under “Events/2014 Conference - Gateway to Activities/2014 Call for Papers.” If you have an innovative program you would like to share with your peers, this is a great way to do it on a national level. Download the packet now, and begin your journey as one of the speakers for NAAP’s 32nd Annual Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

By Diane Mockbee, BS, AC-BC, ACC, Director of OperationsIt is hard to believe that over two years have passed since the NAAP Credentialing Center officially began offering Board Certification to

Activity Professionals. These past two years have shown the NAAPCC Board and the NAAP Board that this was definitely the route to take.We are growing day-by-day, and are approaching the 800 mark of Board Certified Activity Professionals and Consultants throughout the

United States and Canada. With our growth, we have decided to create a satellite office with set office hours to enable Activity Professionals to reach someone five days a week. We have hired an Office Manager for this office, and are proud to announce that Brenda Scott, AC-BC, ADC, is NAAPCC’s new Office Manager. Brenda’s term of office with the NAAPCC Board ended April 30th. Brenda is busy changing all of our paper documents, including applications and renewals to a digital format. She is responsible for general office duties such as phone, email, the monthly competency exam and the website. We are very excited about this new venture and know Brenda and the office will be a huge asset to our organization.

At our annual meeting, after several weeks of review, we completed a reorganization of board duties and titles. We are proud to announce the addition of Lorre Baird, BS, AP-BC, ADC, CDP, from South Carolina as our new Director of Compliance and Ethics. Lorre, with the assistance of the Board, will be developing a Code of Conduct, Disciplinary policies for credentialed individuals, board members and em-ployees. It will also be Lorre’s duty to ensure that NAAPCC is following the guidelines for the National Commission for Certifying Agen-cies (NCCA) accreditation and to keep the goals for the NAAPCC on track with this project. Debbie Bouknight’s new title is Director of Outreach and Re-Certification. Her responsibilities include mailing renewals and reviewing submitted renewals. Melissa Dixon’s title is now Associate Director of Operations and Credentialing. Melissa reviews all new applications and preapproves education sessions for various educational opportunities offered by other organizations and instructors. Sharon Inoue, CNHA, AP-BC, continues as our Liaison with the NAAP Board, writing monthly reports on projects the NAAPCC is working on. Joan Flannigan, AC-BC, continues as Director of Finance and is head of our California home office. I continue as the Director of Operations.

We also have a totally new, redesigned website. I encourage everyone to visit the new site and become familiar with what it has to offer. With the new website, NAAPCC can now provide our competency exam via the website. We are also able to accept credit card payment when you register for the exam. NAAPCC has been able to eliminate the third party process, thus streamlining the registration procedure. We are now able to have individuals register for the exam and take it anytime between the 6th of the month and the last day of the month. Previously, one had to register by the 10th of the month and take the exam between the 15th and 25th of that month. We feel this new procedure will enable exam takers to have more flexibility in scheduling and completing the exam.

We are proud to announce Path 5 as our newest option for those wishing to become Board Certified. Since our Grandfathering program ended January 1, 2013, we have had many requests to continue that program. However, we felt there had to be an “end” to that particular program. After much discussion and review, Path 5 is now an option for those certified by another certifiying body, such as those who hold ADC or ACC certification. They must, however, successfully complete the Credentialing Center Exam. This path is also open to those with a CTRS, MT-BC, ATR-BC, COTA, or OTR certification. These appliants must show proof of one year’s experience working in activities with the elderly within the past three years and have successfully completed the Credentialing Center’s Exam. Brenda Scott continues to be the contact person for the NAAPCC exam.

Please go to www.naapcc.net for information regarding the exam, along with the most current information and forms that are ready for your use. We are offering the NAAP Credentialing Center’s PowerPoint presentation on our website for those who wish to use this at their state conferences and other venues. The PowerPoint presentation on the website will always contain the latest information for your use.

We ask that you mail all applications to our satellite office: NAAPCC; 224 N. Millbrook Court, Aurora, CO 80018-1660. Please direct all calls to 303/317-5682, Mountain Time Zone, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. If you need any of the Board members at any time, our contact information is on the website and Brenda can also let us know about any questions you may have. The NAAPCC’s email address is: [email protected].

We are excited about our continued growth and thank everyone who believed we could do this!! The NAAPCC is definitely on the right path for the success of our credentialed Activity Professionals everywhere. We are proud to be your option for National Board Certification! Congratulations to everyone who is credentialed through NAAPCC!!

NAAP Regulations Committee Update • QAPI – What’s it all about?By Alisa Tagg, BA ACC/EDU AC-BC CDP

Section 6102(c) of the Affordable Care Act requires that all nursing homes develop Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs. The statute requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop a prototype QAPI program, estab-lish standards, and provide technical assistance to facilities regarding the development of best practices in order to meet such standards. One year after a final rule for QAPI is issued all nursing homes must have an acceptable QAPI plan in place and implemented.

A pilot is currently underway with 17 facilities in four states (Florida, Minnesota, California, and Massachusetts). This development is to help transform nursing homes through continuous attention to quality of care and quality of life.

CMS has developed a framework of five elements for a QAPI program. This framework is applied to QAPI in all health care settings that CMS regulates e.g., hospitals, home care, ambulatory care, and dialysis units. CMS has customized the five QAPI elements for nursing homes, taking into account that residents actually live in nursing homes and that good quality of life and residents’ ability to exercise choice are im-portant. At the same time, safety and high quality of all health care services is a paramount goal, as in all other settings. The five elements are:

Element 1: Design and ScopeA QAPI program must be ongoing and comprehensive; dealing with the full range of services offered by the facility, including the full

range of departments. When fully implemented, the program should address clinical care, quality of life, resident choice, and care transitions. It aims for safety and high quality with all clinical interventions, while emphasizing autonomy and choice in daily life for residents (or resi-dent’s agents). It utilizes the best available evidence to define and measure goals. Nursing homes will need to have in place, a written QAPI plan adhering to these principles.

Element 2: Governance and LeadershipThe governing body and/or administration of the nursing home develops and leads the QAPI program, which involves leadership work-

ing with input from facility staff, as well as from residents and their families and/or representatives. The governing body assures the QAPI program is adequately resourced to conduct its work. This includes designating one or more persons to be accountable for QAPI; developing leadership and facility-wide training about QAPI; and ensuring staff time, equipment, and technical training as needed for QAPI. They are responsible for establishing policies to sustain the QAPI program, despite changes in personnel and turnover. The governing body and execu-tive leadership are also responsible for setting priorities for the QAPI program and building on the principles identified in the design and scope. The governing body and executive leadership are also responsible for setting expectations around safety, quality, rights, choice, and respect by balancing both a culture of safety and a culture of resident-centered rights and choice. The governing body ensures that while staff are held ac-countable, there exists an atmosphere in which staff are not punished for errors and do not fear retaliation for reporting quality concerns.

Element 3: Feedback, Data Systems, and MonitoringThe facility puts in place systems to monitor care and services, drawing data from multiple sources. Feedback systems actively incorporate

input from staff, residents, families, and others as appropriate. This element includes using Performance Indicators to monitor a wide range of care processes and outcomes, and reviewing findings against benchmarks and/or targets the facility has established for performance. It also includes tracking, investigating, and monitoring Adverse Events that must be investigated every time they occur, and action plans imple-mented to prevent recurrences.

Element 4: Performance Improvement Projects (PIPs)The facility conducts Performance Improvement Projects (PIPs) to examine and improve care or services in areas that are identified as

needing attention. A PIP project typically is a concentrated effort on a particular problem in one area of the facility or facility wide; it involves gathering information systematically to clarify issues or problems, and intervening for improvements. PIPs are selected in areas important and meaningful for the specific type and scope of services unique to each facility.

Element 5: Systematic Analysis and Systemic ActionThe facility uses a systematic approach to determine when in-depth analysis is needed to fully understand the problem, its causes, and

implications of a change. The facility uses a thorough and highly organized/structured approach to determine whether and how, identified problems may be caused or exacerbated by the way care and services are organized or delivered. Additionally, facilities will be expected to de-velop policies and procedures and demonstrate proficiency in the use of Root Cause Analysis. Systemic Actions look comprehensively across all involved systems to prevent future events and promote sustained improvement. This element includes a focus on continual learning and continuous improvement. When preparing your staff for QAPI you should consider the following:• Do all staff, residents, and families feel free to speak up to identify areas that need improvement? How do you know if they feel free to speak up?• Do you need to promote awareness of performance improvement and create the expectation that everyone in the nursing home needs to be involved?• How well do your staff work in teams? How do you know?• How good is your organization at drilling down to identify the underlying causes of problems, so that you can effectively prevent them from recurring?• Have your previous improvement efforts been successful? What contributed to the success? What were the challenges/barriers?• How good are you at using data to drive your improvement efforts? What data sources are or could be used to assist in future improvement efforts?

The information provided in this article was obtained from www.ahcancal.org. NAAP will keep you informed of any changes or updates.

If the residents aren’t interested, she makes a point to return after the program is finished her visit with the residents. Eliza is well liked by the staff, residents, and family members. She is very dependable and has given over 600 hours of service.

local zoo and a professional gospel singer. He is a natural at what he is doing. He is kind, loving, and attentive to the residents. He is energetic and has so much zest for life, which has become contagious to the residents.

Administrator of the Year: Kathleen Carver, Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Lockwood, MSKathleen has been the administrator at Good Shepherd Nursing Home for the last twelve years. She began her career as an Activity

Director and is very creative and engages in the lives of the residents. She constantly goes the extra mile for the care of her residents, and fully supports, and is supported, by her staff. She has personally implemented Cultural Change areas within the facility including: a sidewalk café, food pantry for employees, decorations and upgrades, and assisting with making the residents’ areas look like home. Kathleen encourages and promotes activities, providing the Activity Director with funds for continuing education. She encourages residents to go on many trips and joins in as much as possible. She is the first staff member at the facility in the morning and generally the last one to leave. Kathleen truly cares for each resident and her staff. It is not just a job, but a calling. She makes the facility a wonderful place to live and work.

Activity Professional of the Year: Elaine Kielman, Asbury Methodist Village, Ellicott City, MDElaine has been an activity professional for the last 25 years and a NAAP member for the last 20 years. Elaine has served on committees

with local and state boards. She currently directs a staff of 10 associates with four of them being nationally certified. She also supervises the volunteer department that has logged more than 265,000 hours of service in the last two years. Elaine has developed several programs specific to the needs of her residents, including a language program for the non-English speaking residents, book clubs, sewing/craft rooms, holiday lighted gardens (within the facility), outreach programs, motorcycle day, and end of life baskets to provide quality of life at the end of life. Elaine has assisted three young men in identifying projects for the Eagle Scout award. She is certified from the Wildlife Habitat Council and also is a CARF Surveyor in her spare time. She has developed Montessori-Based Dementia programs within the facility. Elaine has provided multiple presentations at local and state levels. Elaine is a role model to/for others, both within the activity program and outside. Elaine knows there are times to be outspoken and times to work quietly behind the scenes. Elaine is able to see the big picture and focus on those different levels to meet individual needs.

Keep Spring in Your Step!

Spring is officially in the air! And the mold spores, dust,

pollen, and a host of other allergens that come with spring are

causing eye problems for many Americans.

Itchy, watery eyes are not something that you just have to

live with this spring. If you suffer from eye allergies,

talk to your optometrist to discuss options that can

help you enjoy this wonderful season.

Spring can be particularly hard on contact

lens wearers, but ocular allergies can also make

non-contact lens wearers miserable. When allergy

symptoms kick in, patients usually visit the local

drugstore to pick up a systemic antihistamine

for relief. While these medications can clear up

systemic symptoms like runny noses, sneezing and

coughing, they can make ocular symptoms worse

by reducing tear quantity and quality.

For patients who experience dry eye and ocular allergy

problems this spring, optometrists have a number of very

effective medications.

Allergy sufferers can help themselves by controlling their

ocular environment. Limiting exposure to environmental

allergies (keeping the windows closed during the worst

seasons, washing your eyes after being outside) can also limit

the severity of symptoms.

For contact lens wearers, it is important to

be mindful of the “surface environment” that

contact lenses create. Extended wearing times,

infrequent replacement of lenses, and use of

potentially irritating contact lens care products

can significantly exacerbate symptoms. Proper lens

care is an important part of keeping contact lens

wearers safe and comfortable.

Don’t just endure the spring season with eye

allergies. Visit your optomotrist this spring and

enjoy the season free from eye allergy symptoms!

Staying Healthy at 50+

Life expectancy has grown dramatically over the last century, but not all those living

longer now are living well. The survey “Growing Old in America: The Health and

Retirement Study,” (HRS) sponsored by the National Institute on Aging, found some

Clinicians order diagnostic tests when they suspect someone has a disease. Screening

tests, however, help check for problems before symptoms are apparent. Check with your

doctor about what screenings you should have. Targeted screenings based on age, gender,

underlying health condition or family history can make all the difference for a healthy life.

Executive Director’s Corner

Hello Everyone! Well, the Easter Bunny has hopped away & the April showers

have left some nice flowers. Don’t forget to take the time to enjoy them.

We all long for those “good old days” sometimes. As I was pulling up to the

gas pump the other day, I was thinking about the “good old days” when we could

just pull into the station and an attendant would come out, wash our windshield,

fill up the car with gas, check our air pressure in the tires and take our money

inside for us! Now that was service! All of that and gas was only $.25 per gallon.

In our little town of Brooksville, we could go a long way on that gallon of gas. As

teenagers, we could go all the way out to Weeki Wachee and Pine Island for a fun

day in the sun! We, of course had a drive in movie. We could surely get a whole

lot of teenagers crammed into one car. Now a days, our children/grandchildren

won’t even ride with anyone else. I think we had a lot more fun than they are

having now, don’t you? I really have never liked pumping my own gas. We have

to get out in the weather (messes up our hair) and there is just no way to look

feminine while you are pumping gas. Believe me I’ve tried. Anyway, I’m pretty

sure those “service” days are gone forever. I’m really sure that we will never see

another gas price at $.25 per gallon, either. Some “good old day” memories are

not so good in reality, but that gas station memory is one that everyone would

like to see again!

Now a days, our children/grandchildren won’t even ride with anyone else. I

Blessings to you every day and don’t forget that “Laughter Is The Best

1 Spring Quarter 2012Volume 23, Issue 16

The Official Publication of the National Association of Activity Professionals

Welcome to the Spring Edition of the NAAP newsletter! This is the first of four install-

ments that members will be receiving in addition to the E-Blasts sent as often as weekly.

NAAP found that there is so much more information that needs to get to members that

often cannot wait until the next quarter’s issue. This way, Activity Professionals will have

more information at their fingertips in a more timely manner.

By now, you have all received the 2012 NAAP conference brochure and are packing

your bags for Tennessee. This year NAAP is celebrating its 30th anniversary and the con-

ference will surely be a wonderful week. This is a great time to look back and see how far

we have come as well as a time to re-focus on where the next 30 years will take us!

The NAAP Board of Trustees met in Las Vegas, Nevada for their fall Board meeting.

We combined this meeting with our traditional “Summer Meeting” where we would have

met with the LAC and began planning for the 2013 conference. By combining these

meetings, we saved around $4,000.00 and are well ahead in our planning for the Las Vegas

conference. The Tropicana Hotel is a wonderful site for Activity Professionals and their

families as a working vacation.I was in Washington, DC thanks in part to support from my former employer and

NAAP for the LeadingAge conference where NAAP had a complimentary booth. NAAP

was recognized in the brochure and during the opening ceremony for our assistance in

planning its Wellness Track. NAAP also had a complimentary booth at the American

Health Care Association conference in October. NAAP is very grateful to both AHCA

and LeadingAge for their support of our profession. NAAP represents YOU at these con-

ferences and focuses the majority of our time in the booth telling administrators and

others about the importance of supporting you through education and membership in

NAAP.Upon my return to work on Monday following the LeadingAge conference, I was sur-

prised and devastated to learn that my position as Activity Director was being eliminated.

This was effective immediately and my responsibilities were going to be absorbed by other

staff. I had worked at the community for 15 years and had been an Activity Director since

1984 - over 27 years! My facility had been very supportive of me throughout my years

there, allowing me to attend NAAP conferences, NAAP Board meetings, the LeadingAge

Education committee meetings and conferences, AHCA conferences, local Activity As-

sociation meetings as well as wonderful recognition during NAP week. So, I truly thank

them for their support. I will miss the staff, residents, entertainers and volunteers there.

Our State is an At-Will State meaning no job (unless union) is truly protected. For the past two months I have done

some incredible soul searching and explored areas that I have never had to. I have basically

worked since I was 15 years old (even longer if you count babysitting!) and never had a

problem getting a job. What I have realized continued on page 2In this Issue...Presidents Message..................................pg 1-2NAAP Professional Development Trustee ..................................pg 2
