A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR The new hospital is well under way. The many residents who drive past the site know this very well. It is a very big construction site, with the main building’s core already well out of the ground. A modern new hospital is exciting for residents of the Northern Beaches. It has been a long time coming. Securing the funding for the hospital and the extensive road and transport works has been a great achievement for the both the local State MPs and the local councils who lobbied hard over a long period. Unfortunately, the construction phase means that many residents living around the site have had their lives and ‘quiet enjoyment’ of their homes and neighbourhoods turned upside down, with noise and traffic chaos stretching well beyond normal working hours. Many of these residents are understandably angry or very frustrated that some of the big planning issues involved are still some way from being resolved. Many expected that these decisions would have been made by now and that this would allow them to make decisions on their own futures. The development of the new hospital, provides an opportunity for large-scale ancillary development. Original estimates of how long this would take have proven to be unrealistic and the complexity underestimated. I apologise on behalf of the Council for the upset this has caused. I am, however, satisfied it has been unavoidable. I can also assure residents that I am giving the matter the highest priority. Planning the area involves consultation with a number of State Government departments. Each option requires traffic studies for an area that is clearly a transport challenge. I am hoping a report will be presented to Council in September.
