My friend has advanced cancer and won’t survive the normal treatments. Only comfort care will be given. Our bodies are so hardy, and our relationships so strong, that we hurl ourselves through life at high rates of speed, thinking that everything is always going to be fine. Then we hit a wall of reality. A slap in the face, punch in the gut, startling dose of reality rocks our world. Suddenly we are reminded that we are mortal and the life we enjoy today may change in an instant. The introduction to Psalm 143 says “O Lord, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness come to my relief.” Relief can take many forms. Sometimes relief is a restoration of prior well-being. God is a God who heals and restores. The well-being that I enjoy daily is His provision for me. Without Him I would not be. But sometimes His relief comes in other ways. One suffering in loneliness can know the relief of companionship. One suffering and worried about final arrange- ments can find relief in someone helping them put their affairs into order. Some- times a person suffering is scared about dying alone. Relief can be a friend sitting by them in their final hours. John 14 becomes more relevant on days like today. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me.” My prayer is like David’s prayer quoted earlier. “Have mercy, oh Lord, and bring relief”. June 5-6 Youth Garage Sale Prep: 1st-4th Sale: 5th-6th Pastor Randy preached a sermon last Sunday entitled “Spending Time” on the same day I marked ten years here at FBC Killeen. First, thank you for a very honoring event. Thank you, First Baptist, for having me for ten years, longer than any church I have served since entering ministry bi-vocationally in 1984 and full-time ministry in 1993. Melissa and I love “spending our time” in ministry. We love our church, and while we don’t necessarily love being “made a fuss over,” we went home last night deeply moved and changed for the better. Like any work, ministry can become a “job” and ministers can lose sight of why we are here. We are here to serve the body and bride of Christ and hearing that what we do actually does make a difference made Melissa and I both want to be better. My ministry life verse is found in Colossians 1:27b-29. “Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim Him, warning everyone and teaching everyone so that we may pre- sent everyone perfect, complete, and mature in Christ Jesus. To this end, I also labor, striving according to His power which works powerfully in me.” MARCH TO THE CROSS: Speaking of “spending time”, I would like to challenge our LifeGroups to take up the 40 days from Sunday, March 1, to Good Friday, April 10, to set aside at least one way that they as a class or as individuals “practice the presence of God,” the theme which Pastor Randy has been emphasizing all this year. It may be a “fast from” something or a “dedication to” something for 40 days. Only Jesus could supernaturally fast from food and water for 40 days. You may want to take a break from social media, television, or from certain foods or drinks for those 40 days. Or, you may want to dedicate yourself to do something like read through the entire New Testament, share the gospel or your salvation testimony every day for 40 days, contact a different member of your LifeGroup every day, or some other “fast from” or “dedication to” goal. To practice the presence of God is another way of living your life for 40 days in a row in the way that Christ would want you to do, as if He were living through you. Because, through the Holy Spirit, Christ is “in you, the hope of glory.” SAVE THE DATE! June 15-19 Vacation Bible School Home Bible Fellowship!
